Finite-dimensional Approximations of Discrete Groups
The main objective of this workshop was to bring together experts from various fields, which are all interested in finite and finite-dimensional approximations of infinite algebraic and analytic objects, such as groups, algebras, dynamical systems, group actions, or even von Neumann algebras
Between primitive and 2-transitive : synchronization and its friends
The second author was supported by the Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology) through the project CEMAT-CIÊNCIAS UID/Multi/ 04621/2013An automaton (consisting of a finite set of states with given transitions) is said to be synchronizing if there is a word in the transitions which sends all states of the automaton to a single state. Research on this topic has been driven by the Černý conjecture, one of the oldest and most famous problems in automata theory, according to which a synchronizing n-state automaton has a reset word of length at most (n − 1)2 . The transitions of an automaton generate a transformation monoid on the set of states, and so an automaton can be regarded as a transformation monoid with a prescribed set of generators. In this setting, an automaton is synchronizing if the transitions generate a constant map. A permutation group G on a set Ω is said to synchronize a map f if the monoid (G, f) generated by G and f is synchronizing in the above sense; we say G is synchronizing if it synchronizes every non-permutation. The classes of synchronizing groups and friends form an hierarchy of natural and elegant classes of groups lying strictly between the classes of primitive and 2-homogeneous groups. These classes have been floating around for some years and it is now time to provide a unified reference on them. The study of all these classes has been prompted by the Černý conjecture, but it is of independent interest since it involves a rich mix of group theory, combinatorics, graph endomorphisms, semigroup theory, finite geometry, and representation theory, and has interesting computational aspects as well. So as to make the paper self-contained, we have provided background material on these topics. Our purpose here is to present recent work on synchronizing groups and related topics. In addition to the results that show the connections between the various areas of mathematics mentioned above, we include a new result on the Černý conjecture (a strengthening of a theorem of Rystsov), some challenges to finite geometers (which classical polar spaces can be partitioned into ovoids?), some thoughts about infinite analogues, and a long list of open problems to stimulate further work.PostprintPeer reviewe
On Undecidable Dynamical Properties of Reversible One-Dimensional Cellular Automata
Cellular automata are models for massively parallel computation. A cellular automaton consists of cells which are arranged in some kind of regular lattice and a local update rule which updates the state of each cell according to the states of the cell's neighbors on each step of the computation.
This work focuses on reversible one-dimensional cellular automata in which the cells are arranged in a two-way in_nite line and the computation is reversible, that is, the previous states of the cells can be derived from the current ones. In this work it is shown that several properties of reversible one-dimensional cellular automata are algorithmically undecidable, that is, there exists no algorithm that would tell whether a given cellular automaton has the property or not.
It is shown that the tiling problem of Wang tiles remains undecidable even in some very restricted special cases. It follows that it is undecidable whether some given states will always appear in computations by the given cellular automaton. It also follows that a weaker form of expansivity, which is a concept of dynamical systems, is an undecidable property for reversible one-dimensional cellular automata.
It is shown that several properties of dynamical systems are undecidable for reversible one-dimensional cellular automata. It shown that sensitivity to initial conditions and topological mixing are undecidable properties. Furthermore, non-sensitive and mixing cellular automata are recursively inseparable. It follows that also chaotic behavior is an undecidable property for reversible one-dimensional cellular automata.Siirretty Doriast

Matrix Product States and Projected Entangled Pair States: Concepts, Symmetries, and Theorems
The theory of entanglement provides a fundamentally new language for
describing interactions and correlations in many body systems. Its vocabulary
consists of qubits and entangled pairs, and the syntax is provided by tensor
networks. We review how matrix product states and projected entangled pair
states describe many-body wavefunctions in terms of local tensors. These
tensors express how the entanglement is routed, act as a novel type of
non-local order parameter, and we describe how their symmetries are reflections
of the global entanglement patterns in the full system. We will discuss how
tensor networks enable the construction of real-space renormalization group
flows and fixed points, and examine the entanglement structure of states
exhibiting topological quantum order. Finally, we provide a summary of the
mathematical results of matrix product states and projected entangled pair
states, highlighting the fundamental theorem of matrix product vectors and its
applications.Comment: Review article. 72 page
