    Position Management fĂĽr ortsbezogene Community-Dienste

    In Location-based Community Services (LBCSs) mobile users interchange and correlate their spatial positions, for example, in order to find out which other community members are currently staying nearby. The so-called position management is responsible for the transmission, analysis, processing and access control of position information, which is directed along a corresponding supply chain. The supply chain spans from the mobile device of the target person, where the position is derived, for example, by GPS, via intermediaries like the location or LBS provider, to the domain of the user. Community services pose special requirements on position management, which can be coarsely divided into the fields privacy protection and efficiency: First, the target person must be able to control by who and under which circumstances her position information is accessed. To guarantee that, it must be possible to anonymize the position data with respect to the location and LBS provider, for which so far no technique exists that is suited for community services. Also, the target person must be able to authorize requests to access her position in an easy and socially acceptable fashion. Second, concepts for efficiently realizing so-called proactive multi-target LBCSs are needed. These services are automatically triggered as soon as two or more target person have entered into a certain pre-defined spatial constellation. An example is buddy tracking, which automatically detects when two persons have approached each other below a certain proximity distance. The technical problem to solve is the frequent transmission of position information over the scarce air-interface and the associated energy consumption at the mobile terminal of the target person. This dissertation develops new concepts in both of the sketched fields and shows their feasibility based on numerous simulations and analytical reflection. Also the TraX-platform is presented, which practically implements the developed concepts.Bei ortsbezogenen Community-Diensten (Location-based Community Services, LBCSs) tauschen mobile Nutzer ihre Ortsinformationen miteinander aus oder setzen sie zueinander in Beziehung, zum Beispiel um zu erfahren, welche anderen Community-Mitglieder gerade in der Nähe sind. Dabei regelt das so genannte Position Management die Übertragung, Analyse, Aufbereitung und Zugriffsverwaltung der Ortsinformationen entlang einer entsprechenden Wertschöpfungskette. Diese erstreckt sich vom Endgerät der Zielperson, auf dem die Ortsinformation zum Beispiel mittels GPS abgeleitet wird, über Intermediäre wie dem Location und LBS Provider bis hin zum Nutzer. Bei Community-Diensten ergeben sich die folgenden Herausforderungen an das Position Management, die sich grob in die Bereiche Datenschutz und Effizienz einteilen lassen: Zum einen soll die Zielperson Kontrolle darüber erhalten, wer unter welchen Umständen auf ihre Ortsinformationen zugreifen darf. Um dies zu gewährleisten, müssen Ortsdaten vor dem Location und LBS Provider anonymisiert werden können, wofür bislang keine für Community-Dienste geeignete Technik besteht. Außerdem soll die Zielperson in der Lage sein, den Zugriff anderer Nutzer auf eine möglichst einfache und sozial akzeptable Form zu steuern. Zum anderen sollen so genannte proaktive Mehrpersonen-LBCSs effizient realisiert werden. Hier wird automatisch erkannt, wenn zwei oder mehr Zielpersonen eine vorher definierte räumliche Konstellation zueinander einnehmen. Ein Beispiel ist Buddy Tracking, bei dem automatisch festgestellt wird, ob sich zwei Personen einander angenähert haben. Das Problem hierbei ist die häufige Übertragung von Ortsinformationen über die knappe Luftschnittstelle und der hohe, damit einhergehende Energieverbrauch auf dem Enderät der Zielperson. Auch hier fehlen bislang geeignete Lösungsansätze. Die Dissertation entwickelt daher neuartige Konzepte in beiden vorgestellten Bereichen und zeigt deren Eignung anhand zahlreicher Simulationen sowie analytischer Bewertungen. Auch wird die TraX-Plattform vorgestellt, welche die erarbeiteten Konzepte praktisch umsetzt

    Novel techniques for location-cloaked applications

    Location cloaking has been shown to be cost-effective in mitigating location privacy and safety risks. This strategy, however, has significant impact on the applications that rely on location information. They may suffer efficiency loss; some may not even work with reduced location resolution. This research investigates two problems. 1) How to process location-cloaked queries. Processing such queries incurs significant more workload for both server and client. While the server needs to retrieve more query results and transmit them to the client, the client downloading these results wastes its battery power because most of them are useless. To address these problems, we propose a suite of novel techniques including query decomposition, scheduling, and personalized air indexing. These techniques are integrated into a single unified platform that is capable of handling various types of queries. 2) How a node V can verify whether or not another node P indeed locates in a cloaking region it claims. This problem is challenging due to the fact that the process of location verification may allow V to refine P\u27s location within the region. We identify two types of attacks, transmission coverage attack and distance bounding attack. In the former, V refines a cloaking region by adjusting its transmission range to partially overlap with the region, whereas in the latter, by measuring the round trip time of its communication with P. We present two corresponding counter strategies, and built on top of them, propose a novel technique that allows P to participate in location verification while providing a certain level of guarantee that its cloaking region will not be refined during the process

    EFFECTIVE GROUPING FOR ENERGY AND PERFORMANCE: CONSTRUCTION OF ADAPTIVE, SUSTAINABLE, AND MAINTAINABLE DATA STORAGE

    The performance gap between processors and storage systems has been increasingly critical overthe years. Yet the performance disparity remains, and further, storage energy consumption israpidly becoming a new critical problem. While smarter caching and predictive techniques domuch to alleviate this disparity, the problem persists, and data storage remains a growing contributorto latency and energy consumption.Attempts have been made at data layout maintenance, or intelligent physical placement ofdata, yet in practice, basic heuristics remain predominant. Problems that early studies soughtto solve via layout strategies were proven to be NP-Hard, and data layout maintenance todayremains more art than science. With unknown potential and a domain inherently full of uncertainty,layout maintenance persists as an area largely untapped by modern systems. But uncertainty inworkloads does not imply randomness; access patterns have exhibited repeatable, stable behavior.Predictive information can be gathered, analyzed, and exploited to improve data layouts. Ourgoal is a dynamic, robust, sustainable predictive engine, aimed at improving existing layouts byreplicating data at the storage device level.We present a comprehensive discussion of the design and construction of such a predictive engine,including workload evaluation, where we present and evaluate classical workloads as well asour own highly detailed traces collected over an extended period. We demonstrate significant gainsthrough an initial static grouping mechanism, and compare against an optimal grouping method ofour own construction, and further show significant improvement over competing techniques. We also explore and illustrate the challenges faced when moving from static to dynamic (i.e. online)grouping, and provide motivation and solutions for addressing these challenges. These challengesinclude metadata storage, appropriate predictive collocation, online performance, and physicalplacement. We reduced the metadata needed by several orders of magnitude, reducing the requiredvolume from more than 14% of total storage down to less than 12%. We also demonstrate how ourcollocation strategies outperform competing techniques. Finally, we present our complete modeland evaluate a prototype implementation against real hardware. This model was demonstrated tobe capable of reducing device-level accesses by up to 65%

    Performance of management solutions and cooperation approaches for vehicular delay-tolerant networks

    A wide range of daily-life applications supported by vehicular networks attracted the interest, not only from the research community, but also from governments and the automotive industry. For example, they can be used to enable services that assist drivers on the roads (e.g., road safety, traffic monitoring), to spread commercial and entertainment contents (e.g., publicity), or to enable communications on remote or rural regions where it is not possible to have a common network infrastructure. Nonetheless, the unique properties of vehicular networks raise several challenges that greatly impact the deployment of these networks. Most of the challenges faced by vehicular networks arise from the highly dynamic network topology, which leads to short and sporadic contact opportunities, disruption, variable node density, and intermittent connectivity. This situation makes data dissemination an interesting research topic within the vehicular networking area, which is addressed by this study. The work described along this thesis is motivated by the need to propose new solutions to deal with data dissemination problems in vehicular networking focusing on vehicular delay-tolerant networks (VDTNs). To guarantee the success of data dissemination in vehicular networks scenarios it is important to ensure that network nodes cooperate with each other. However, it is not possible to ensure a fully cooperative scenario. This situation makes vehicular networks suitable to the presence of selfish and misbehavior nodes, which may result in a significant decrease of the overall network performance. Thus, cooperative nodes may suffer from the overwhelming load of services from other nodes, which comprises their performance. Trying to solve some of these problems, this thesis presents several proposals and studies on the impact of cooperation, monitoring, and management strategies on the network performance of the VDTN architecture. The main goal of these proposals is to enhance the network performance. In particular, cooperation and management approaches are exploited to improve and optimize the use of network resources. It is demonstrated the performance gains attainable in a VDTN through both types of approaches, not only in terms of bundle delivery probability, but also in terms of wasted resources. The results and achievements observed on this research work are intended to contribute to the advance of the state-of-the-art on methods and strategies for overcome the challenges that arise from the unique characteristics and conceptual design of vehicular networks.O vasto número de aplicações e cenários suportados pelas redes veiculares faz com que estas atraiam o interesse não só da comunidade científica, mas também dos governos e da indústria automóvel. A título de exemplo, estas podem ser usadas para a implementação de serviços e aplicações que podem ajudar os condutores dos veículos a tomar decisões nas estradas, para a disseminação de conteúdos publicitários, ou ainda, para permitir que existam comunicações em zonas rurais ou remotas onde não é possível ter uma infraestrutura de rede convencional. Contudo, as propriedades únicas das redes veiculares fazem com que seja necessário ultrapassar um conjunto de desafios que têm grande impacto na sua aplicabilidade. A maioria dos desafios que as redes veiculares enfrentam advêm da grande mobilidade dos veículos e da topologia de rede que está em constante mutação. Esta situação faz com que este tipo de rede seja suscetível de disrupção, que as oportunidades de contacto sejam escassas e de curta duração, e que a ligação seja intermitente. Fruto destas adversidades, a disseminação dos dados torna-se um tópico de investigação bastante promissor na área das redes veiculares e por esta mesma razão é abordada neste trabalho de investigação. O trabalho descrito nesta tese é motivado pela necessidade de propor novas abordagens para lidar com os problemas inerentes à disseminação dos dados em ambientes veiculares. Para garantir o sucesso da disseminação dos dados em ambientes veiculares é importante que este tipo de redes garanta a cooperação entre os nós da rede. Contudo, neste tipo de ambientes não é possível garantir um cenário totalmente cooperativo. Este cenário faz com que as redes veiculares sejam suscetíveis à presença de nós não cooperativos que comprometem seriamente o desempenho global da rede. Por outro lado, os nós cooperativos podem ver o seu desempenho comprometido por causa da sobrecarga de serviços que poderão suportar. Para tentar resolver alguns destes problemas, esta tese apresenta várias propostas e estudos sobre o impacto de estratégias de cooperação, monitorização e gestão de rede no desempenho das redes veiculares com ligações intermitentes (Vehicular Delay-Tolerant Networks - VDTNs). O objetivo das propostas apresentadas nesta tese é melhorar o desempenho global da rede. Em particular, as estratégias de cooperação e gestão de rede são exploradas para melhorar e optimizar o uso dos recursos da rede. Ficou demonstrado que o uso deste tipo de estratégias e metodologias contribui para um aumento significativo do desempenho da rede, não só em termos de agregados de pacotes (“bundles”) entregues, mas também na diminuição do volume de recursos desperdiçados. Os resultados observados neste trabalho procuram contribuir para o avanço do estado da arte em métodos e estratégias que visam ultrapassar alguns dos desafios que advêm das propriedades e desenho conceptual das redes veiculares

    Ami-deu : un cadre sémantique pour des applications adaptables dans des environnements intelligents

    Cette thèse vise à étendre l’utilisation de l'Internet des objets (IdO) en facilitant le développement d’applications par des personnes non experts en développement logiciel. La thèse propose une nouvelle approche pour augmenter la sémantique des applications d’IdO et l’implication des experts du domaine dans le développement d’applications sensibles au contexte. Notre approche permet de gérer le contexte changeant de l’environnement et de générer des applications qui s’exécutent dans plusieurs environnements intelligents pour fournir des actions requises dans divers contextes. Notre approche est mise en œuvre dans un cadriciel (AmI-DEU) qui inclut les composants pour le développement d’applications IdO. AmI-DEU intègre les services d’environnement, favorise l’interaction de l’utilisateur et fournit les moyens de représenter le domaine d’application, le profil de l’utilisateur et les intentions de l’utilisateur. Le cadriciel permet la définition d’applications IoT avec une intention d’activité autodécrite qui contient les connaissances requises pour réaliser l’activité. Ensuite, le cadriciel génère Intention as a Context (IaaC), qui comprend une intention d’activité autodécrite avec des connaissances colligées à évaluer pour une meilleure adaptation dans des environnements intelligents. La sémantique de l’AmI-DEU est basée sur celle du ContextAA (Context-Aware Agents) – une plateforme pour fournir une connaissance du contexte dans plusieurs environnements. Le cadriciel effectue une compilation des connaissances par des règles et l'appariement sémantique pour produire des applications IdO autonomes capables de s’exécuter en ContextAA. AmI- DEU inclut également un outil de développement visuel pour le développement et le déploiement rapide d'applications sur ContextAA. L'interface graphique d’AmI-DEU adopte la métaphore du flux avec des aides visuelles pour simplifier le développement d'applications en permettant des définitions de règles étape par étape. Dans le cadre de l’expérimentation, AmI-DEU comprend un banc d’essai pour le développement d’applications IdO. Les résultats expérimentaux montrent une optimisation sémantique potentielle des ressources pour les applications IoT dynamiques dans les maisons intelligentes et les villes intelligentes. Notre approche favorise l'adoption de la technologie pour améliorer le bienêtre et la qualité de vie des personnes. Cette thèse se termine par des orientations de recherche que le cadriciel AmI-DEU dévoile pour réaliser des environnements intelligents omniprésents fournissant des adaptations appropriées pour soutenir les intentions des personnes.Abstract: This thesis aims at expanding the use of the Internet of Things (IoT) by facilitating the development of applications by people who are not experts in software development. The thesis proposes a new approach to augment IoT applications’ semantics and domain expert involvement in context-aware application development. Our approach enables us to manage the changing environment context and generate applications that run in multiple smart environments to provide required actions in diverse settings. Our approach is implemented in a framework (AmI-DEU) that includes the components for IoT application development. AmI- DEU integrates environment services, promotes end-user interaction, and provides the means to represent the application domain, end-user profile, and end-user intentions. The framework enables the definition of IoT applications with a self-described activity intention that contains the required knowledge to achieve the activity. Then, the framework generates Intention as a Context (IaaC), which includes a self-described activity intention with compiled knowledge to be assessed for augmented adaptations in smart environments. AmI-DEU framework semantics adopts ContextAA (Context-Aware Agents) – a platform to provide context-awareness in multiple environments. The framework performs a knowledge compilation by rules and semantic matching to produce autonomic IoT applications to run in ContextAA. AmI-DEU also includes a visual tool for quick application development and deployment to ContextAA. The AmI-DEU GUI adopts the flow metaphor with visual aids to simplify developing applications by allowing step-by-step rule definitions. As part of the experimentation, AmI-DEU includes a testbed for IoT application development. Experimental results show a potential semantic optimization for dynamic IoT applications in smart homes and smart cities. Our approach promotes technology adoption to improve people’s well-being and quality of life. This thesis concludes with research directions that the AmI-DEU framework uncovers to achieve pervasive smart environments providing suitable adaptations to support people’s intentions

    Geostry - a Peer-to-Peer System for Location-based Information

    An interesting development is summarized by the notion of ”Ubiquitous Computing”: In this area, miniature systems are integrated into everyday objects making these objects ”smart” and able to communicate. Thereby, everyday objects can gather information about their state and their environment. By embedding this information into a model of the real world, which nowadays can be modeled very realistically using sophisticated 3D modeling techniques, it is possible to generate powerful digital world models. Not only can existing objects of the real world and their state be mapped into these world models, but additional information can be linked to these objects as well. The result is a symbiosis of the real world and digital information spaces. In this thesis, we present a system that allows for an easy access to this information. In contrast to existing solutions our approach is not based on a server-client architecture. Geostry bases on a peer-to-peer system and thus incorporates all the advantages, such as self-organization, fairness (in terms of costs), scalability and many more. Setting up the network is realized through a decentralized bootstrapping protocol based on an existing Internet service to provide robustness and availability. To selectively find geographic-related information Geostry supports spatial queries. They - among other things - enable the user to search for information e.g. in a certain district only. Sometimes, a certain piece of information raises particular interest. To cope with the run on the single computer that provides this specific information, Geostry offers dynamic replication mechanisms. Thereby, the information is replicated for as long as the rush lasts. Thus, Geostry offers all aspects from setting up a network, providing access to geo-related information and replication methods to provide accessibility in times of high loads
