The three flavour chiral phase transition with an improved quark and gluon action in lattice QCD
The finite-temperature chiral phase transition is investigated for three
flavours of staggered quarks on a lattice of temporal extent N_t=4. In the
simulation we use an improved fermion action which reduces rotational symmetry
breaking of the quark propagator (p4-action), include fat-links to improve the
flavour symmetry and use the tree level improved (1,2) gluon action. We study
the nature of the phase transition for quark masses of ma=0.025, ma=0.05 and
ma=0.1 on lattices with spatial sizes of 8^3 and 16^3.Comment: LATTICE98(hightemp), 3 pages, 7 figures, LaTeX2e-File, espcrc2.st
Early predictors of phonological and morphological awareness and the link with reading : evidence from children with different patterns of early deficit
This study examines the contribution of early phonological processing (PP) and language skills on later phonological awareness (PA) and morphological awareness (MA), as well as the links among PA, MA, and reading. Children 4–6 years of age with poor PP at the start of school showed weaker PA and MA 3 years later (age 7–9), regardless of their language skills. PA and phonological and morphological strategies predict reading accuracy, whereas MA predicts reading comprehension. Our findings suggest that children with poor early PP are more at risk of developing deficits in MA and PA than children with poor language. They also suggest that there is a direct link between PA and reading accuracy and between MA and reading comprehension that cannot be accounted for by strategy use at the word level
Submilliamp threshold InGaAs-GaAs strained layer quantum-well laser
Strained-layer InGaAs-GaAs single-quantum-well buried-heterostructure lasers were fabricated by a hybrid beam epitaxy and liquid-phase epitaxy technique. Very low threshold currents, 2.4 mA for an uncoated laser (L=425 μm) and 0.75 mA for a coated laser (R~0.9, L=198 μm), were obtained. A 3-dB modulation bandwidth of 7.6 GHz was demonstrated at low bias current (14 mA). Procedures for material preparation and device fabrication are introduced
Off-diagonal Gluon Mass Generation and Infrared Abelian Dominance in the Maximally Abelian Gauge in Lattice QCD
We study effective mass generation of off-diagonal gluons and infrared
abelian dominance in the maximally abelian (MA) gauge. Using the SU(2) lattice
QCD, we investigate the propagator and the effective mass of the gluon field in
the MA gauge with the U(1) Landau gauge fixing. The Monte Carlo simulation
is performed on the lattice with , and
also on the and lattices with . In the MA
gauge, the diagonal gluon component shows long-range propagation, and
infrared abelian dominance is found for the gluon propagator. In the MA gauge,
the off-diagonal gluon component behaves as a massive vector boson
with the effective mass GeV in the region of r \gsim
0.2 fm, and its propagation is limited within short range. We conjecture that
infrared abelian dominance can be interpreted as infrared inactivity of the
off-diagonal gluon due to its large mass generation induced by the MA gauge
fixing.Comment: 31 pages, 7 figures and 2 tables included, changed title, corrected

Purification and quantification of recombinant Epstein-Barr viral glycoproteins gp350/220 from Chinese hamster ovary cells
Truncated Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) membrane antigen gp350/220 (EBV-MA) lacking the membrane anchor was expressed and secreted into the medium of recombinant Chinese hamster ovary cells that had been cultured in Plasmapur hollow-fibre modules using defined serum-free medium. The EBV-MA in the medium was concentrated by 70% (w/v) ammonium sulphate precipitation and subsequently purified by immunoaffinity chromatography using an anti-EBV-MA (EBV.0T6) monoclonal antibody (mAb) column. Adsorbed antigen was eluted with 3 M MgCl2 in phosphate-buffered saline, concentrated by Mono Q anion-exchange chromatography and analysed by sodium dodecyl sulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, silver staining and Western blotting using EBV-positive serum and anti-EBV-MA specific mAbs. Monospecific polyclonal rabbit antibodies against the purified EBV-MA were raised and purified by protein G affinity chromatography. For the measurement of EBV-MA antigen levels a sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay using rabbit polyclonal antibodies and a horseradish peroxidase-conjugated anti-MA mAb was developed having a detection level of 10 ng/ml
