    Hardware-software co-design of AES on FPGA

    This paper presents a compact hardware-software co-design of Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) on the field programmable gate arrays (FPGA) designed for low-cost embedded systems. The design uses MicroBlaze, a soft-core processor from Xilinx. The computationally intensive operations of the AES are implemented in hardware for better speed. The sub-byte calculation is designed with the help of the processor carrying out the calculations using hardware blocks implemented using FPGA. By incorporating the processor in the AES design, the total number of slices required to implement the AES algorithm on FPGA is proved to be reduced. The entire AES system design is validated using 460 slices in Spartan-3E XC3S500E, which is one of the low-cost FPGA

    A Sub-block Based Image Retrieval Using Modified Integrated Region Matching

    This paper proposes a content based image retrieval (CBIR) system using the local colour and texture features of selected image sub-blocks and global colour and shape features of the image. The image sub-blocks are roughly identified by segmenting the image into partitions of different configuration, finding the edge density in each partition using edge thresholding followed by morphological dilation. The colour and texture features of the identified regions are computed from the histograms of the quantized HSV colour space and Gray Level Co- occurrence Matrix (GLCM) respectively. The colour and texture feature vectors is computed for each region. The shape features are computed from the Edge Histogram Descriptor (EHD). A modified Integrated Region Matching (IRM) algorithm is used for finding the minimum distance between the sub-blocks of the query and target image. Experimental results show that the proposed method provides better retrieving result than retrieval using some of the existing methods.Comment: 7 page

    Smart parking management system using SSGA MQTT and real-time database

    Smart parking system as a part of smart city development has been widely proposed with several research. In this research, proposed a system of parking management application that functions to monitor and control the location of parking slot that can be used by the parking management and parking users. The web application connected to ultrasonic sensor and GPS using MQTT protocol and real-time database. The research used modify algorithm of the SSGA, to optimize the allocation of empty parking slot and MQTT protocol to obtain the faster response time of the system when many users are accessing the website application. The results obtain a variation of sending delays from the client publish to firebase at 4 seconds. Meanwhile, for the sending delay from the broker to firebase the variation was at 2 seconds for each time of data sending

    A Survey of Protocol-Level Challenges and Solutions for Distributed Energy Resource Cyber-Physical Security

    The increasing proliferation of distributed energy resources (DERs) on the smart grid has made distributed solar and wind two key contributors to the expanding attack surface of the network; however, there is a lack of proper understanding and enforcement of DER communications security requirements. With vendors employing proprietary methods to mitigate hosts of attacks, the literature currently lacks a clear organization of the protocol-level vulnerabilities, attacks, and solutions mapped to each layer of the logical model such as the OSI stack. To bridge this gap and pave the way for future research by the authors in determining key DER security requirements, this paper conducts a comprehensive review of the key vulnerabilities, attacks, and potential solutions for solar and wind DERs at the protocol level. In doing so, this paper serves as a starting point for utilities, vendors, aggregators, and other industry stakeholders to develop a clear understanding of the DER security challenges and solutions, which are key precursors to comprehending security requirements

    Survey of smart parking systems

    The large number of vehicles constantly seeking access to congested areas in cities means that finding a public parking place is often difficult and causes problems for drivers and citizens alike. In this context, strategies that guide vehicles from one point to another, looking for the most optimal path, are needed. Most contributions in the literature are routing strategies that take into account different criteria to select the optimal route required to find a parking space. This paper aims to identify the types of smart parking systems (SPS) that are available today, as well as investigate the kinds of vehicle detection techniques (VDT) they have and the algorithms or other methods they employ, in order to analyze where the development of these systems is at today. To do this, a survey of 274 publications from January 2012 to December 2019 was conducted. The survey considered four principal features: SPS types reported in the literature, the kinds of VDT used in these SPS, the algorithms or methods they implement, and the stage of development at which they are. Based on a search and extraction of results methodology, this work was able to effectively obtain the current state of the research area. In addition, the exhaustive study of the studies analyzed allowed for a discussion to be established concerning the main difficulties, as well as the gaps and open problems detected for the SPS.     Citizens AND HYdrology (CANDHY): conceptualizing a transdisciplinary framework for citizen science addressing hydrological challenges

    Widely available digital technologies are empowering citizens who are increasingly well informed and involved in numerous water, climate, and environmental challenges. Citizen science can serve many different purposes, from the "pleasure of doing science" to complementing observations, increasing scientific literacy, and supporting collaborative behaviour to solve specific water management problems. Still, procedures on how to incorporate citizens' knowledge effectively to inform policy and decision-making are lagging behind. Moreover, general conceptual frameworks are unavailable, preventing the widespread uptake of citizen science approaches for more participatory cross-sectorial water governance. In this work, we identify the shared constituents, interfaces, and interlinkages between hydrological sciences and other academic and non-academic disciplines in addressing water issues. Our goal is to conceptualize a transdisciplinary framework for valuing citizen science and advancing the hydrological sciences. Joint efforts between hydrological, computer, and social sciences are envisaged for integrating human sensing and behavioural mechanisms into the framework. Expanding opportunities of online communities complement the fundamental value of on-site surveying and indigenous knowledge.
