    Comparing explicit and implicit feedback techniques for web retrieval : TREC-10 interactive track report

    In this paper we examine the extent to which implicit feedback (where the system attempts to estimate what the user may be interested in) can act as a substitute for explicit feedback (where searchers explicitly mark documents relevant). Therefore, we attempt to side-step the problem of getting users to explicitly mark documents relevant by making predictions on relevance through analysing the user's interaction with the system. Specifically, we hypothesised that implicit and explicit feedback were interchangeable as sources of relevance information for relevance feedback. Through developing a system that utilised each type of feedback we were able to compare the two approaches in terms of search effectiveness

These images, if analyzed, can reveal useful information to the human users. Image mining deals with the extraction of implicit knowledge, image data relationship, or other patterns not explicitly stored in the images. Image mining is more than just an extension of data mining to image domain. It is an interdisciplinary endeavor that draws upon expertise in computer vision, image processing, image retrieval, data mining, machine learning, database, and artificial intelligence. Despite the development of many applications and algorithms in the individual research fields cited above, research in image mining is still in its infancy. In this paper, we will examine the research issues in image mining, current developments in image mining, particularly, image mining frameworks, state-of-the-art techniques and systems. We will also identify some future research directions for image mining at the end of this paper

    Towards a taxonomy of process flexibility (extended version)

    Effective business processes must be able to accommodate changes to the environment in which they operate, e.g., new laws, changes in business strategy. The ability to encompass such changes is termed process flexibility. In this paper, we take a deeper look into the various ways in which flexibility can be achieved and propose a comprehensive taxonomy of these methods which identifies both the manner in which each of them is facilitated, and also the various configuration options and alternatives that exist in each case. This taxonomy is subsequently used to evaluate a selection of process-aware information systems and identify their potential to deploy flexible business processes

    Design of a Multidimensional Model Using Object Oriented Features in UML

    A data warehouse is a single repository of data which includes data generated from various operational systems. Conceptual modeling is an important concept in the successful design of a data warehouse. The Unified Modeling Language (UML) has become a standard for object modeling during analysis and design steps of software system development. The paper proposes an object oriented approach to model the process of data warehouse design. The hierarchies of each data element can be explicitly defined, thus highlighting the data granularity. We propose a UML multidimensional model using various data sources based on UML schemas. We present a conceptual-level integration framework on diverse UML data sources on which OLAP operations can be performed. Our integration framework takes into account the benefits of UML (its concepts, relationships and extended features) which is more close to the real world and can model even the complex problems easily and accurately. Two steps are involved in our integration framework. The first one is to convert UML schemas into UML class diagrams. The second is to build a multidimensional model from the UML class diagrams. The white-paper focuses on the transformations used in the second step. We describe how to represent a multidimensional model using a UML star or snowflake diagram with the help of a case study. To the best of our knowledge, we are the first people to represent a UML snowflake diagram that integrates heterogeneous UML data sources

    The use of implicit evidence for relevance feedback in web retrieval

    In this paper we report on the application of two contrasting types of relevance feedback for web retrieval. We compare two systems; one using explicit relevance feedback (where searchers explicitly have to mark documents relevant) and one using implicit relevance feedback (where the system endeavours to estimate relevance by mining the searcher's interaction). The feedback is used to update the display according to the user's interaction. Our research focuses on the degree to which implicit evidence of document relevance can be substituted for explicit evidence. We examine the two variations in terms of both user opinion and search effectiveness

    Building a Semantic Tendering System

    In the new B2B e-commerce arena, applications such as auctions and data exchange are growing rapidly. However, Web content is currently designed for human consumption rather than computer manipulation. This limits the possibility of Web automation. Fortunately, the new development of the Semantic Web that allows Web pages to provide information not only in terms of their content, but also in terms of the properties of that content, can be used for automation. Electronic tendering systems are among the successfully commercial systems that can tremendously benefit from the availability of Semantic Web. This study proposes an e-tendering system that uses the Semantic Web to investigate the automatic negotiation process. The system is built in a P2P environment to simulate a two-player negotiation. It is found that the ontology of semantic information can be used to locate qualified suppliers and precede negotiation. The bargaining power of each party is then determined by the relative magnitude of the negotiators’ respective costs of haggling and the utility that varies with the degree of risk preference. Our experiments showed that applying automatic negotiation strategies to e-tendering system in semantic web can reflect the risk preference of the participants

    A Review of integrity constraint maintenance and view updating techniques

    Two interrelated problems may arise when updating a database. On one hand, when an update is applied to the database, integrity constraints may become violated. In such case, the integrity constraint maintenance approach tries to obtain additional updates to keep integrity constraints satisfied. On the other hand, when updates of derived or view facts are requested, a view updating mechanism must be applied to translate the update request into correct updates of the underlying base facts. This survey reviews the research performed on integrity constraint maintenance and view updating. It is proposed a general framework to classify and to compare methods that tackle integrity constraint maintenance and/or view updating. Then, we analyze some of these methods in more detail to identify their actual contribution and the main limitations they may present.Postprint (published version
