It addresses the individual efforts of some scientists to ensure a better quality of life for the population, in a society marked by inequalities and economic-social and political dependence of powers with a higher level of development. For the accomplishment of the work the method of the hermeneutics is used, taking into account the bibliographical revision, to arrive at the conclusion that between 1899-1925 the scientific and technological development of the country was slow, due to the serious social problems that existed in to the health of the people; a period in which the individual effort of relevant scientists linked to medicine was highlighted, without the official support of the state achieving satisfactory results in branches such as :epidemiology, parasitology and to a lesser extent in others such as :urology, surgery and ophthalmology.

A Critical Evaluation of South Carolina\u27s Contributions to the National Register of Historic Places

The National Register of Historic Places, as outlined in the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, records places and spaces worthy of preservation throughout the United States. The legislation indicates, “the Secretary of the Interior is authorized to expand and maintain a National Register of Historic Places composed of districts, sites, buildings, structures, and objects significant in American history, architecture, archaeology, engineering, and culture.” The National Register should arguably reflect the nation’s history, which many resources claim it to achieve: “the National Register is the nation’s inventory of historic places and the national repository of documentation on the variety of historic property types, significance, abundance, condition, ownership, needs, and other information.” However, because the nomination of new listings is a social and political process, it seems that the National Register may be a repository to show preservation preferences over time. This study investigates whether the National Register in South Carolina meets the goal of being a comprehensive repository of buildings, structures, sites, and objects that narrate South Carolina’s history, using the National Register listings from South Carolina to see if they are evenly distributed across categories. This investigation provides insight into the historic preservation movement and the National Register. A database of all of South Carolina’s National Register listings provides the foundation for analysis. Categories analyzed for each property are: National Register Criteria, architectural classifications and styles, areas and periods of significance, as well as other elements included on nomination forms. The resulting graphs, charts, and other data visualization tools represent the patterns and put forward a unique perspective on the collection of properties that encompass South Carolina’s contributions to the National Register. This thesis presents a critical evaluation of the National Register by analyzing listings in the state of South Carolina to determine whether or not it lives up to its mission of representing the diverse history of the state. Findings indicate that the 1,556 listings added between 1966 and 2017 are fully representative of South Carolina’s history, however with uneven distributions. The methodology can be replicated in other states and results can inform future investigations leading to a broader range of properties on the National Register of Historic Places

Twentieth century light curves and the nucleus of comet P/Tempel 2

Observations of P/Tempel 2 from 1899 to 1988 corresponding to 13 apparitions are analyzed in order to estimate the perihelion asymmetry of the gas production curve for different periods of its evolution. Using the correlation found by Festou et al. (1990) between the perihelion asymmetries and the delay in perihelion passage due to the action of nongravitational forces, we estimate the mass of the comet to be M approximately equals 1.6 plus or minus 0.5 x 10(exp 14) kg. Assuming a volume of 500 cu km, based on nuclear observations, a density of 0.3 plus or minus 0.1 g/cu cm is obtained

OLS-based estimation of the disturbance variance under spatial autocorrelation

We investigate the OLS-based estimator s2 of the disturbance variance in the standard linear regression model with cross section data when the disturbances are homoskedastic, but spatially correlated. For the most popular model of spatially autoregressive disturbances, we show that s2 can be severely biased in finite samples, but is asymptotically unbiased and consistent for most types of spatial weighting matrices as sample size increases. --regression,spatial error correlation, bias, variance

The presidents of the Bank of Taiwan and their times : background, management and business development : 1899-1925

    Get PDF
This paper is the brief history of the Bank of Taiwan (BOT, 台湾銀行) from 1899 to 1925, especially focusing on the first to the fourth presidents who represent the era of the rise and fall of the BOT. The BOT was established by the Japanese government in 1899 as colonial development bank in Taiwan, however they changed the business model to that of an international bank covering mainland China and Southeast Asia in 1910s. This rapid expansionism failed in the early 1920s and the BOT temporarily closed its doors in 1927. The question is how and when these problems occurred and spread in the organization as a result of mismanagement. Through the analysis of their achievements and personal background along with corporate performance and macro history, we are better able to understand the rise and fall of the BOT
