Measurement of eta photoproduction on the proton from threshold to 1500 MeV
Beam asymmetry and differential cross section for the reaction gamma+p->eta+p
were measured from production threshold to 1500 MeV photon laboratory energy.
The two dominant neutral decay modes of the eta meson, eta->2g and eta->3pi0,
were analyzed. The full set of measurements is in good agreement with
previously published results. Our data were compared with three models. They
all fit satisfactorily the results but their respective resonance contributions
are quite different. The possible photoexcitation of a narrow state N(1670) was
investigated and no evidence was found.Comment: 18 pages, 14 figures, 4 tables Submitted to EPJ
Quality Characteristics of Concrete Poles Manufactured in the Ibadan Metropolis, Southwest Nigeria
In Nigeria, power is transmitted by overhead transmission lines fixed on wooden or concrete poles.
Often times these poles collapse under excessive loads occasioned by storm and accidents. This
project work is to determine the quality characteristics of concrete electric poles used to carry overhead
conductors in the Ibadan metropolis of Nigeria. Samples of broken concrete poles were collected from
various sites within Ibadan metropolis. Core, permeability, cube and tensile tests were carried out on
samples of stumbled poles and fresh concrete mix collected from companies producing poles. This was
to check the conformance of the poles to the standard set by the regulatory authority. The test results
showed that all the samples on which the core and permeability tests were carried out fell short of the
required standard of 37,000KN/m. For the core test, only one sample had the average values of
46,200KN/m and 50,400KN/m2 at 7days and 28days respectively which exceeded the standard
minimum value. The results showed that the manufacturers did not use the right ratio of materials, the
mode of mixing of the aggregates was not adequate and casting allowed voids/air space which made
the poles permeable and the period of curing (the number of days) of the poles was not adequate.
Almost all the poles were found to be below standar
Recognizing aboriginal oral tradition through blended learning: a success story
The Aboriginal Health and Community Administration Program (AHCAP) is a certificate program developed through the partnership of the Institute for Aboriginal Health and Continuing Studies at the University of British Columbia. This paper examines factors in the program’s blended design and development which have contributed to the exceptionally high completion rate and the strongly positive responses and outcomes for widely diverse learner cohorts. Factors which appear to contribute to the program success include: 1) a holistic approach compatible with traditional Aboriginal oral traditions of teaching and learning; 2) a university partnership that taps into unique networks and capacities; 3) incorporating the 4 R’s of Aboriginal education: relevance, reciprocity, respect and responsibility generated throughout the learning and teaching, both online and face-to-face; and 4) making the program accessible to geographically and technologically diverse communities of learners.\u

\u3ci\u3eTomicus Piniperda\u3c/i\u3e (Coleoptera: Scolytidae): Is Shoot Feeding Required for Reproductive Maturation?
The pine shoot beetle, Tomicus piniperda (Coleoptera: Scolytidae), is a univoltine pest of pine in its native range of Europe and Asia. Tomicus piniperda is now widely established in the Great Lakes region and poses a potentially significant threat to other pine-producing areas in North America. An unusual aspect of the life history of T. piniperda is the extended period of maturation-feeding that takes place in the shoots of living pine trees and subsequent overwintering before adults reproduce the following year. We investigated the extent to which shoot-feeding is required by newly-emerged T. piniperda before introduction into Scotch pine (Pinus sylvestris) logs and before any overwintering, in order for successful reproduction to occur. Tomicus piniperda F1 adults successfully reproduced in pine logs in the laboratory after either no shoot-feeding or after 2 to 10 weeks of shoot-feeding. Thus, it is theoretically possible for T. piniperda to be multivoltine, yet it remains univoltine
