An Analysis of the Costs and Benefits of Delaying the Release of Windows XP
Various parties are urging Microsoft to delay the release of their new PC operating system, Windows XP. Those calling for a delay cite features in Windows XP that they claim threaten competition in software in ways reminiscent of Microsoft's actions to protect Windows from Netscape Navigator's Internet Browser in the mid-to-late 1990s. However, Hahn argues that circumstances in the case of Windows XP are quite different. While it is not possible to quantify the impacts of delay, the evidence strongly suggests that the costs would be substantial and the benefits to competition would be minimal at best. Indeed, there is good reason to believe that the release of Windows XP will increase consumer choice and provide additional competition in key software - most significantly, in instant messaging. In the end, the evidence leans heavily towards supporting the timely release of Windows XP. The only parties that clearly stand to gain from a delay are Microsoft's rivals.
Client/Server Application of the Game Whisp
Bakalářská práce popisuje návrh a implementaci karetní hry Mariáš. Hra je určená pro tři až čtyři hráče, kteří ji hrají přes počítačovou síť prostřednictvím protokolu TCP/IP. Hra je vytvořená pro systémy Microsoft Windows XP, Vista a 7 v programovacím jazyce Java. The bachelors thesis describe predesign and implementation of the card game the Whisp. Game is dedicated for three or four players, who play it using computer network and protocol TCP/IP. Game is developed for Microsoft Windows XP, Vista, 7 operating systems. Programming language is Java.
Circuit Diagram Editor with Qt Interface
This bachelor thesis deals with object-oriented design and implementation of a computer application for creating and editing electronic circuit diagrams. The application is implemented in C++ and uses the Qt framework. All source codes are freely available. The application is portable, it can be run on operating systems Microsoft Windows XP/Vista/7/8 or Linux distributions.
The Elusive Antitrust Standard on Bundling in Europe and in the United States in the Aftermath of the Microsoft Cases
Allegations of anticompetitive tying and bundling were significant parts
of the antitrust cases against Microsoft in the United States and the
European Union. The facts are well known. Starting with the integration
of MS-DOS to Windows and the introduction of Windows XP, Microsoft has
progressively produced and added to the Windows operating system a
number of applications, such as its Web browser, Internet Explorer
(which was included in Windows 95 in 1995), and Windows Media Player
(WMP), which was integrated to Windows ME in 2000. Microsoft's policy of
integrating new functionalities to the Windows operating system has been
challenged by both the U.S. and the European antitrust authorities
Aftermarketfailure: Windows XP\u27s End of Support
After 12 years, support for Windows XP will end on April 8, 2014. So proclaims a Microsoft website with a helpful clock counting down the days. What does this mean? the website asks. It means you should take action. You should migrate to a current supported operating system - such as Windows 8.1 - so you can receive regular security updates to protect [your] computer from malicious attacks. The costs of mass migration will be immense. About 30% of all desktop PCs are running Windows XP right now. An estimated 10% of the U.S. government\u27s computers run Windows XP, including thousands of computers on classified military and diplomatic networks. And the costs of staying put? They will be enormous, too. It turns out that 95% of the world\u27s ATMs are powered by Windows XP, and there is no readily available substitute in the offing. In one example of these exorbitant costs, the price of either extending support or upgrading to another version of Windows for each of Britain\u27s major banks will be in the hundreds of millions. Costs will be similar, or perhaps even higher, worldwide. The failure to continue to patch unpatched computers will also have serious ramifications for society. Hackers will keep scouring Windows XP for flaws, holes, and vulnerabilities for many years after Microsoft ends support for its vaunted operating system. Zero-day vulnerabilities-flaws hackers have long known about but have waited to exploit for fear that the vulnerability will be immediately patched (and could therefore only be used once or for a short time)-will now be exploitable in perpetuity. Experts have repeatedly warned that April 8 could spark a hacker feeding frenzy. Yet, ironically, those who run Windows XP pose a greater threat to others than to themselves. In the special case of governments, enterprise businesses, and financial institutions, failure to patch or migrate will expose the personal data of millions of individuals to theft, fraud, and abuse. When the wave of security breaches from unpatched machines arrives, the lawsuits against companies for failure to secure user data properly will become even more costly. There may also be immense blows to consumer confidence, leading to welfare-reducing market-wide substitutions away from e-commerce

Extracting the Windows Clipboard from Physical Memory
When attempting to reconstruct the events leading up to a cyber security incident, one potentially important piece of information is the clipboard (Prosise et al., 2003). The clipboard has been present in Windows since Windows 3.1 and is the mechanism for transferring information from one application to another through copy and pasting actions. Being able to retrieve the last file copied or the last password used may provide investigators with invaluable information during a forensic investigation. This paper describes the Windows clipboard structure and the process of retrieving copy/paste information from Windows XP, Vista, and Windows 7 (both 32 bit and 64 bit) memory captures with data from applications including Notepad, Microsoft Word, and Microsoft Excel
Essencial do Windows
