Close kin influences on fertility behavior

Family members are uniquely situated to influence the decision-making of their kin in nearly every facet of life. We examine the importance of social interactions in fertility outcomes by assessing family members’ scope of influence on their fellow kin’s fertility behavior. With the unique KASS genealogical dataset from eight countries in Europe, we study the effects of family members’ fertility outcomes on individual fertility to assess the presence and the extent of inter-generational transmission of fertility behaviors and siblings’ influences on fertility outcomes. We find only limited evidence of the inter-generational transmission of fertility behaviors, but a relatively important effect of siblings for individual fertility. Rather than parents, siblings’ influences appear to constitute the largest share of familial influences on fertility outcomes. We also find that among siblings, women’s fertility is more subject to the influences of their sisters. These findings indicate the relative importance of close kin influences on individual fertility and demonstrate the consequences of family structure for fertility change.Europe, family demography, family size, fertility, kinship, sisters

The Americanization of European Higher Education and Research

Over the past two decades there has been a substantial increase in the mobility ofstudents in Europe, while also research has become much more internationallyoriented. In this paper we document changes in the structure of research and highereducation in Europe and investigate potential explanations for the strong increase inits international orientation. While higher education started to grow substantiallyaround 1960, only a few decades later, research and higher education transformedgradually to the American standard. Decreased communication costs are likely causesfor this trend. Th is transformation is most clearly revealed in the change of languageused in research from the national language, Latin, German and French to English.Smaller language areas made this transformation earlier while there are also cleartiming diff erences between research fi elds. Sciences and medicine tend to switch toEnglish fi rst, followed by economics and social sciences, while for law and arts onlythe fi rst signs of such a transformation are currently observed. Collaboration « chaude » ou collaboration « froide » ? Le cas d’Henri Jeanson (1938-1947)

L’histoire de la collaboration et de l’épuration a connu récemment de nouvelles avancées. Elles font encore, selon nous, trop peu de place à l’examen des trajectoires personnelles et à l’intentionnalité des acteurs. C’est ce que nous proposons avec cette étude du cas d’Henri Jeanson, homme de presse, de théâtre et de cinéma dont le parcours, de 1938 à 1947, est à la fois représentatif et atypique d’un milieu socioculturel et politique qui a cru trouver des avantages à la situation nouvelle issue de la défaite de 1940 avant de se raviser et de basculer dans une opposition plus ou moins déclarée.The history of collaboration and purges has advanced recently.
