    Wildcard dimensions, coding theory and fault-tolerant meshes and hypercubes

    Hypercubes, meshes and tori are well known interconnection networks for parallel computers. The sets of edges in those graphs can be partitioned to dimensions. It is well known that the hypercube can be extended by adding a wildcard dimension resulting in a folded hypercube that has better fault-tolerant and communication capabilities. First we prove that the folded hypercube is optimal in the sense that only a single wildcard dimension can be added to the hypercube. We then investigate the idea of adding wildcard dimensions to d-dimensional meshes and tori. Using techniques from error correcting codes we construct d-dimensional meshes and tori with wildcard dimensions. Finally, we show how these constructions can be used to tolerate edge and node faults in mesh and torus networks

    Next generation of Exascale-class systems: ExaNeSt project and the status of its interconnect and storage development

    The ExaNeSt project started on December 2015 and is funded by EU H2020 research framework (call H2020-FETHPC-2014, n. 671553) to study the adoption of low-cost, Linux-based power-efficient 64-bit ARM processors clusters for Exascale-class systems. The ExaNeSt consortium pools partners with industrial and academic research expertise in storage, interconnects and applications that share a vision of an European Exascale-class supercomputer. The common goal is designing and implementing a physical rack prototype together with its cooling system, the non-volatile memory (NVM) architecture and a unified low-latency interconnect able to test different options for network and storage. Furthermore, the consortium goal is to provide real HPC applications to validate the system. In this paper we describe the unified data and storage network architecture, reporting on the status of development of different testbeds and highlighting preliminary benchmark results obtained through the execution of scientific, engineering and data analytics scalable application kernels

    Conflict-free star-access in parallel memory systems

    We study conflict-free data distribution schemes in parallel memories in multiprocessor system architectures. Given a host graph G, the problem is to map the nodes of G into memory modules such that any instance of a template type T in G can be accessed without memory conflicts. A conflict occurs if two or more nodes of T are mapped to the same memory module. The mapping algorithm should: (i) be fast in terms of data access (possibly mapping each node in constant time); (ii) minimize the required number of memory modules for accessing any instance in G of the given template type; and (iii) guarantee load balancing on the modules. In this paper, we consider conflict-free access to star templates. i.e., to any node of G along with all of its neighbors. Such a template type arises in many classical algorithms like breadth-first search in a graph, message broadcasting in networks, and nearest neighbor based approximation in numerical computation. We consider the star-template access problem on two specific host graphs-tori and hypercubes-that are also popular interconnection network topologies. The proposed conflict-free mappings on these graphs are fast, use an optimal or provably good number of memory modules, and guarantee load balancing. (C) 2006 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved

    Deterministic 1-k routing on meshes with applications to worm-hole routing

    In 11-kk routing each of the n2n^2 processing units of an nĂ—nn \times n mesh connected computer initially holds 11 packet which must be routed such that any processor is the destination of at most kk packets. This problem reflects practical desire for routing better than the popular routing of permutations. 11-kk routing also has implications for hot-potato worm-hole routing, which is of great importance for real world systems. We present a near-optimal deterministic algorithm running in \sqrt{k} \cdot n / 2 + \go{n} steps. We give a second algorithm with slightly worse routing time but working queue size three. Applying this algorithm considerably reduces the routing time of hot-potato worm-hole routing. Non-trivial extensions are given to the general ll-kk routing problem and for routing on higher dimensional meshes. Finally we show that kk-kk routing can be performed in \go{k \cdot n} steps with working queue size four. Hereby the hot-potato worm-hole routing problem can be solved in \go{k^{3/2} \cdot n} steps

    Simulation Of Multi-core Systems And Interconnections And Evaluation Of Fat-Mesh Networks

    Simulators are very important in computer architecture research as they enable the exploration of new architectures to obtain detailed performance evaluation without building costly physical hardware. Simulation is even more critical to study future many-core architectures as it provides the opportunity to assess currently non-existing computer systems. In this thesis, a multiprocessor simulator is presented based on a cycle accurate architecture simulator called SESC. The shared L2 cache system is extended into a distributed shared cache (DSC) with a directory-based cache coherency protocol. A mesh network module is extended and integrated into SESC to replace the bus for scalable inter-processor communication. While these efforts complete an extended multiprocessor simulation infrastructure, two interconnection enhancements are proposed and evaluated. A novel non-uniform fat-mesh network structure similar to the idea of fat-tree is proposed. This non-uniform mesh network takes advantage of the average traffic pattern, typically all-to-all in DSC, to dedicate additional links for connections with heavy traffic (e.g., near the center) and fewer links for lighter traffic (e.g., near the periphery). Two fat-mesh schemes are implemented based on different routing algorithms. Analytical fat-mesh models are constructed by presenting the expressions for the traffic requirements of personalized all-to-all traffic. Performance improvements over the uniform mesh are demonstrated in the results from the simulator. A hybrid network consisting of one packet switching plane and multiple circuit switching planes is constructed as the second enhancement. The circuit switching planes provide fast paths between neighbors with heavy communication traffic. A compiler technique that abstracts the symbolic expressions of benchmarks' communication patterns can be used to help facilitate the circuit establishment

    SKIRT: hybrid parallelization of radiative transfer simulations

    We describe the design, implementation and performance of the new hybrid parallelization scheme in our Monte Carlo radiative transfer code SKIRT, which has been used extensively for modeling the continuum radiation of dusty astrophysical systems including late-type galaxies and dusty tori. The hybrid scheme combines distributed memory parallelization, using the standard Message Passing Interface (MPI) to communicate between processes, and shared memory parallelization, providing multiple execution threads within each process to avoid duplication of data structures. The synchronization between multiple threads is accomplished through atomic operations without high-level locking (also called lock-free programming). This improves the scaling behavior of the code and substantially simplifies the implementation of the hybrid scheme. The result is an extremely flexible solution that adjusts to the number of available nodes, processors and memory, and consequently performs well on a wide variety of computing architectures.Comment: 21 pages, 20 figure

    Automating Topology Aware Mapping for Supercomputers

    Petascale machines with hundreds of thousands of cores are being built. These machines have varying interconnect topologies and large network diameters. Computation is cheap and communication on the network is becoming the bottleneck for scaling of parallel applications. Network contention, specifically, is becoming an increasingly important factor affecting overall performance. The broad goal of this dissertation is performance optimization of parallel applications through reduction of network contention. Most parallel applications have a certain communication topology. Mapping of tasks in a parallel application based on their communication graph, to the physical processors on a machine can potentially lead to performance improvements. Mapping of the communication graph for an application on to the interconnect topology of a machine while trying to localize communication is the research problem under consideration. The farther different messages travel on the network, greater is the chance of resource sharing between messages. This can create contention on the network for networks commonly used today. Evaluative studies in this dissertation show that on IBM Blue Gene and Cray XT machines, message latencies can be severely affected under contention. Realizing this fact, application developers have started paying attention to the mapping of tasks to physical processors to minimize contention. Placement of communicating tasks on nearby physical processors can minimize the distance traveled by messages and reduce the chances of contention. Performance improvements through topology aware placement for applications such as NAMD and OpenAtom are used to motivate this work. Building on these ideas, the dissertation proposes algorithms and techniques for automatic mapping of parallel applications to relieve the application developers of this burden. The effect of contention on message latencies is studied in depth to guide the design of mapping algorithms. The hop-bytes metric is proposed for the evaluation of mapping algorithms as a better metric than the previously used maximum dilation metric. The main focus of this dissertation is on developing topology aware mapping algorithms for parallel applications with regular and irregular communication patterns. The automatic mapping framework is a suite of such algorithms with capabilities to choose the best mapping for a problem with a given communication graph.     Development of a Navier-Stokes algorithm for parallel-processing supercomputers

    An explicit flow solver, applicable to the hierarchy of model equations ranging from Euler to full Navier-Stokes, is combined with several techniques designed to reduce computational expense. The computational domain consists of local grid refinements embedded in a global coarse mesh, where the locations of these refinements are defined by the physics of the flow. Flow characteristics are also used to determine which set of model equations is appropriate for solution in each region, thereby reducing not only the number of grid points at which the solution must be obtained, but also the computational effort required to get that solution. Acceleration to steady-state is achieved by applying multigrid on each of the subgrids, regardless of the particular model equations being solved. Since each of these components is explicit, advantage can readily be taken of the vector- and parallel-processing capabilities of machines such as the Cray X-MP and Cray-2
