Using DEA and VEA to Evaluate Quality of Life in the Mid-Atlantic States
In this study we use data envelopment analysis (DEA) and an extension of DEA called value efficiency analysis (VEA) to explore the “"production”" of quality of life within counties in the mid-Atlantic region and the extent to which production frontiers and efficiency differ between rural and urban counties. These methods allow us to identify counties that are inefficient in their quality of life production, and to rank (using DEA) those counties according to their distance from a performance standard established by other observed counties(using VEA), or by a single unit designated as "“most preferred"(using VEA).”data envelopment analysis, value efficiency analysis, quality of life, Community/Rural/Urban Development,
Computational Design of Nanoclusters by Property-Based Genetic Algorithms: Tuning the Electronic Properties of (TiO) Clusters
In order to design clusters with desired properties, we have implemented a
suite of genetic algorithms tailored to optimize for low total energy, high
vertical electron affinity (VEA), and low vertical ionization potential (VIP).
Applied to (TiO) clusters, the property-based optimization reveals the
underlying structure-property relations and the structural features that may
serve as active sites for catalysis. High VEA and low VIP are correlated with
the presence of several dangling-O atoms and their proximity, respectively. We
show that the electronic properties of (TiO) up to n=20 correlate more
strongly with the presence of these structural features than with size.Comment: 4 figs, 5 page
First-principles investigation of organic photovoltaic materials C, C, [C]PCBM, and bis-[C]PCBM using a many-body -Lanczos approach
We present a first-principles investigation of the excited-state properties
of electron acceptors in organic photovoltaics including C, C,
[6,6]-phenyl-C-butyric-acid-methyl-ester ([C]PCBM), and
bis-[C]PCBM using many-body perturbation theory within the Hedin's
approximation and an efficient Lanczos approach. Calculated vertical
ionization potentials (VIP) and vertical electron affinities (VEA) of C
and C agree very well with experimental values measured in gas phase.
The density of states of all three molecules is also compared to photoemission
and inverse photoemission spectra measured on thin-films, exhibiting a close
agreement - a rigid energy-gap renormalization owing to intermolecular
interactions in the thin-films. In addition, it is shown that the low-lying
unoccupied states of [C]PCBM are all derived from the highest-occupied
molecular orbitals and the lowest-unoccupied molecular orbitals of fullerene
C. The functional side group in [C]PCBM introduces a slight
electron transfer to the fullerene cage, resulting in small decreases of both
VIP and VEA. This small change of VEA provides a solid justification for the
increase of open-circuit voltage when replacing fullerene C with
[C]PCBM as the electron acceptor in bulk heterojunction polymer solar
cells.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, and 7 table

Toxic Ketene Gas Forms on Vaping Vitamin E Acetate Prompting interest in its ossible Role in the EVALI outbreak
Recent efforts by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and state authorities have led to the determination that vitamin E acetate (VEA) is strongly associated with e-cigarette or vaping product use-associated lung injury (EVALI) (1). VEA has been found in nearly all patient lung fluid samples analyzed and not observed in lung fluid from healthy cohorts. Despite strong evidence linking VEA to EVALI, its putative role as a causative agent has yet to be determined. To address the key issue of whether VEA is a just marker or a significant mediator of EVALI, Wu and O’Shea (2) report in PNAS that VEA reacts when aerosolized with an e-cigarette to produce the highly toxic gas ketene. Confirmation that VEA-derived ketene is a causative agent of EVALI must await rigorous clinical investigation. However, Wu and O’Shea (2) have in the meantime uncovered a compelling lead
No evidence that visual exploratory activity distinguishes the super elite from elite football players
Visual exploratory activities (VEA) refer to head and body movements that football players make prior to receiving the ball to search possibilities for action. VEA is considered a key performance indicator that differentiates the skill level of players. This study revisited whether VEA also distinguishes super elite, award winning players from their elite teammates without awards. To this end, video footage from the men’s UEFA Champions League season 2018–2019 featuring the super elite players (n = 18) and the elite players (n = 18) was analyzed. To reduce the potential differences in match dynamics as much as possible, the selected players in the two groups were of the same team, playing the same match, in the same positioning line. VEA (i.e. frequency per unit time) during the penultimate and final pass prior to ball reception and performance (i.e. percentages of adequate ball contacts and subsequent actions) were compared between the two groups of players using ANOVA and Mann-Whitney tests, respectively. In addition, hierarchical stepwise regression analyses were conducted to explore the degree to which VEA was predicted by group and subsequent performance. The results showed that the players had higher VEA during the final pass (M = 0.45) than the penultimate pass (M = 0.41). There were no significant differences in VEA or performance between the two groups. Also, the regression analyses did not deliver significant models. We conclude that with partial control for match dynamics, no evidence emerged to support that VEA distinguishes super elite players from elite football players
Implementing critical literacy in a Tongan bilingual classroom
This report describes a research study which trialled a unit of work designed for senior high school levels in a Tongan bilingual classroom. The main purpose of the study was to investigate the appropriateness and possible benefits of using critical literacy as a teaching strategy to teach literature in bilingual classrooms in Tonga. A critical literacy approach is relatively new in Tonga, so the study set out to test if this approach would contribute to making the teaching of English more innovative and student-centred. The methodology used in this study was a mix of qualitative and quantitative methods within an action research paradigm. One action research cycle spanned three months for trialling of the study unit and for collecting data. A class of thirty-four students from one Form Six class participated in this study, along with their English teacher as a participant observer. Eleven teachers of English from the same school also participated in interviews for further data collection. I took the role of teacher-researcher. In addition to teaching the study unit, I conducted interviews with teachers and students for further data-gathering. Qualitative and quantitative analysis of the data indicated that both participating teachers and students identified that a critical literacy approach to teaching of English as a subject was highly appropriate to use in Tongan classrooms. Teachers identified resources to be a detriment to the successful implementation of a critical literacy approach. While this concern is acknowledged as a long-term one, in the short-term, existing available resources can still be of practical use. The study was conducted under a bilingual program that might be viewed by researchers on bilingual education as a subtractive bilingual program. Findings related to students‟ ability in both Tongan and English language signified a very low competence in these two languages. But findings related to bilingual teaching indicated a mismatch between the newly adopted bilingual curriculum in Tonga and Tongan English teachers‟ perceptions of bilingual education. It was shown in this study that this mismatch stemmed from a lack of teacher understanding of bilingual education. A couple of pedagogical issues were recommended in order to clear up this misunderstanding. The report concludes with the researcher‟s recommendations for the explicit inclusion of critical literacy in the Tonga Language curriculum. Parental involvement and teachers training are two issues to address in order to achieve a successful implementation of the newly adopted bilingual curriculum where a paradigm shift in teaching is necessary. Recommendations for further research are also included
