Conditional fluctuation theorems and entropy production for monitored quantum systems under imperfect detection

    Get PDF
The thermodynamic behavior ofMarkovian open quantum systems can be described at the level of fluctuations by using continuous monitoring approaches. However, practical applications require assessing imperfect detection schemes, where the definition of main thermodynamic quantities becomes subtle and universal fluctuation relations are unknown. Here, we fill this gap by deriving a universal fluctuation relation that links thermodynamic entropy production and information-theoretical irreversibility along single trajectories in inefficient monitoring setups. This relation provides as a corollary an irreversibility estimator of dissipation using imperfect detection records that lower bounds the underlying entropy production at the level of visible trajectories. We illustrate our findings with a driven-dissipative two-level system following quantum jump trajectories and discuss the experimental applicability of our results for thermodynamic inference. We wish to acknowledge support from the María de Maeztu project (CEX2021-001164-M) for Units of Excellence, QUARESC project (PID2019-109094GB-C21), CoQuSy project (PID2022-140506NB-C21) and QuTTNAQMa project (PID2020-117347GB-I00), funded by the Spanish State Research Agency MCIN/AEI/10.13039/501100011033 and FEDER, UE. The Basque Atlantic countryside: landscape protection, management and planning

    Get PDF
The landscape of the Atlantic countryside in the Basque Country, characterized by its humid climate and a mosaic of meadows, pastures, crops and forests, is deteriorating due to the crisis in the agricultural and livestock sector. Given the recognition of the values associated with this type of landscape, such as biodiversity and cultural heritage, this study examines its landscape management through territorial planning. A qualitative methodology with an inductive approach has been used, based on the analysis of two case studies. It focuses on the Functional Areas of Igorre-Arratia and Donostialdea-Bajo Bidasoa of the Autonomous Region of the Basque Country to identify different interpretations and propose improvements. The results reveal the lack of a unified methodology and the free interpretation of the Basque Landscape Decree (2014), which has given rise to the establishment of disparate criteria in the management of this agricultural landscape. The study identifies deficiencies and proposes a renewed vision, focused on the concept of landscape heritage. The protectionist approach should be reduced and all landscapes must be covered, not only those with exceptional values, promoting a more coherent and balanced management, capable of integrating the territorial, ecological, cultural and economic values of the Basque Atlantic countryside. This article analyses the perception of the Maastricht Treaty among Spanish political elites, civil society organizations and public opinion, and explores its development during the years of economic convergence and after Spain’s access to the single currency, drawing on the hypothesis that this correlated with the country’s economic growth. The two crisis situations that the Spanish economy underwent, first between 1992-1995 and then after the international financial crisis of 2008-2009 are compared. Conclusions are then offered regarding the reasons behind the differing impacts that these crises had on Spanish society and on citizens’ perception of European integration. Finally, this perception is evaluated as an influential factor on European policies that are favourable towards or critical of the European Union, and on the changes that have occurred within the party system.Este artículo se enmarca en el proyecto «Sociedad Internacional y Europeísmo». Findings – The results of this study show a positive and significant effect between the wine tourism development and the sustainable competitive advantage of wineries in Spain as well as the mediating role of employee well-being and organizational commitment in this main connection. Practical implications – Based on the study’s findings, winery managers are advised to develop wine tourism strategies that include guided tours emphasizing sustainability, curated food and wine experiences, cultural activities and specialized employee training programs to improve service quality, strengthen organizational commitment, and eventually achieve a sustainable competitive advantage. Originality/value – The distinctiveness of this research stems from various key aspects: first, it enhances insight into the benefits linked to the wine tourism research field; second, this is the inaugural study to explore wine tourism development as a driving force for sustainable competitive advantage within Spanish wineries and; third, prior studies have not concurrently examined the functions of employee well-being and organizational commitment in mediating the connection between wine tourism development and the wineries’ sustainable competitive advantage

Metabolomic Insights into Wild and Farmed Gilthead Seabream (Sparus aurata): Lipid Composition, Freshness Indicators, and Environmental Adaptations

    Get PDF
Background/Objectives: This study explores the metabolic adaptations and quality differences between wild and farmed gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata), with a particular focus on lipid composition and metabolite profiles. These differences are examined in the context of varying environmental conditions, feeding regimes, and post-harvest processes. High-resolution magic-angle-spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (HR-MAS NMR) spectroscopy was employed to perform the metabolomic analysis. Results: Farmed seabream exhibited higher lipid content and PUFA levels (e.g., DHA and EPA) due to aquaculture diets, while wild seabream showed lower lipid concentrations and elevated levels of polar metabolites. Metabolic trade-offs in wild seabream reflected greater physical activity and environmental adaptation. The K-value indicated faster spoilage in farmed seabream, particularly from Greece, linked to handling conditions. HR-MAS provided precise, reproducible results, allowing direct quantification of key metabolites without altering sample integrity. Methods: HR-MAS NMR was employed to analyze muscle tissue from wild and farmed seabream (produced in Spain and imported from Greece), providing high-resolution spectra without requiring sample extraction. Metabolite quantification included polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), creatine, taurine, lactate, and trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO). Freshness was monitored using the K-value index, calculated from ATP derivative levels in samples stored at 4 °C. Conclusions: The study highlights the influence of diet and environment on the metabolic profiles of seabream. HR-MAS NMR emerges as a robust method for metabolomic studies and freshness assessment. Findings emphasize the potential for dietary adjustments to optimize aquaculture practices and fish quality while underscoring the importance of sustainable production strategies. Further research into lipid metabolism genes and environmental factors is recommended to deepen understanding of these adaptations. This research was funded by CONVOCATORIA DEL PROGRAMA PROPIO DEL CENTRO DE GASTRONOMÍA DEL MEDITERRÁNEO (Gasterra 2022–23) UA_DENIA PARA EL FOMENTO DE LA I+D+i EN El ÁMBITO DE LA GASTRONOMÍA (GASTERRA 2023)

Diversity and systematics of the Ibero-Balearic Eumerus (Diptera: Syrphidae): Providing tools for species identification

    Get PDF
The syrphid genus Eumerus Meigen, 1822 is one of the most speciose in the world. In the Ibero-Balearic area (including Andorra and the Spanish side of the Pyrenees), recent taxonomic studies have increased the knowledge of Eumerus in Europe. A high taxonomic diversity together with a complex morphology make species identification difficult in this genus. The lack of updated and comprehensive tools to assist in the identification of species prompted the production of a dichotomous key to all Ibero-Balearic species of Eumerus and generation of DNA barcodes for ten species. In summary, a total of 37 species of Eumerus and nine species groups are reported in this geographical region. Eumerus caballeroi Gil Collado, 1929 is proposed as junior synonym of Eumerus nudus Loew, 1848 and the taxonomic status of Eumerus pauper Becker, 1921 is discussed. The first sequences of the 5´ region of the Cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene (COI-5´) of Eumerus subornatus Claußen, 1989 and Eumerus truncatus Rondani, 1868 were obtained and their systematic positions corroborated. The present work was funded by the ‘Fauna Ibérica’ project (ref. A methodology for the systematic design of storytelling dashboards applied to Industry 4.0

    No full text
Dashboards are popular tools for presenting key insights to decision-makers by translating large volumes of data into clear information. However, while individual visualizations may effectively answer specific questions, they often fail to connect in a way that conveys the overall narrative, leaving decision-makers without a cohesive understanding of the area under analysis. This paper presents a novel methodology for the systematic design of holistic dashboards, moving from analytical requirements to storytelling dashboards. Our approach ensures that all visualizations are aligned with the analytical goals of decision-makers. It includes several key steps: capturing analytical requirements through the i* framework; structuring and refining these requirements into a tree model to reflect the decision-maker’s mental analysis; identifying and preparing relevant data; capturing the key concepts and relationships for the composition of the cohesive storytelling dashboard through a novel storytelling conceptual model; finally, implementing and integrating the visualizations into the dashboard, ensuring coherence and alignment with the decision-maker’s needs. Our methodology has been applied in real-world industrial environments. We evaluated its impact through a controlled experiment. The findings show that storytelling dashboards significantly improve data interpretation, reduce misinterpretations, and enhance the overall user experience compared to traditional dashboards. This work has been co-funded by the AETHER-UA project (PID2020-112540RB-C43), funded by Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation; the ENIA Chair of Artificial Intelligence from the University of Alicante (TSI-100927-2023-6) funded by the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan from the European Union Next Generation through the Ministry for Digital Transformation and the Civil Service; the Big Data, Data Space, Artificial Intelligence and Health project (TSI-100121-2024-10) funded by the Spanish Ministry of Digital Transformation; and the CIBEST/2022/122 grant, both funded by the Conselleria de Innovación, Universidades, Ciencia y Sociedad Digital (Generalitat Valenciana), Spain.
