    Cities present new challenges and needs to satisfy and improve lifestyle for their citizens under the concept “Smart City”. In order to achieve this goal in a global manner, new technologies are required as the robotic one. But Public entities unknown the possibilities offered by this technology to get solutions to their needs. In this paper the development of the Innovative Public Procurement instruments is explained, specifically the process PDTI (Public end Users Driven Technological Innovation) as a driving force of robotic research and development and offering a list of robotic urban challenges proposed by European cities that have participated in such a process.     A global take on congestion in urban areas

    We analyze the congestion data collected by a GPS device company (TomTom) for almost 300 urban areas in the world. Using simple scaling arguments and data fitting we show that congestion during peak hours in large cities grows essentially as the square root of the population density. This result, at odds with previous publications showing that gasoline consumption decreases with density, confirms that density is indeed an important determinant of congestion, but also that we need urgently a better theoretical understanding of this phenomena. This incomplete view at the urban level leads thus to the idea that thinking about density by itself could be very misleading in congestion studies, and that it is probably more useful to focus on the spatial redistribution of activities and residences.Comment: 3 pages, 2 figure

    Modelling of priority pollutants releases from urban areas

    In the framework of the EU project ScorePP (Source Control Options for Reducing Emissions of Priority Pollutants), dynamic PPs (priority pollutants) fate models are being developed to assess appropriate strategies for limiting the release of PPs from urban sources and for treating PPs on a variety of spatial scales. Different possible sources of PP releases were mapped and both their release pattern and their loads were quantified as detailed as possible. This paper focuses on the link between the gathered PP sources data and the dynamic models of the urban environment. This link consists of: (1) a method for the quantitative and structured storage of temporal emission pattern information, (2) the coupling of GIS-based spatial emission source data with temporal emission pattern information and (3) the generation of PP release time series to feed the dynamic sewer catchment model. Steps 2 and 3 were included as the main features of a dedicated software tool. Finally, this paper also illustrates the method’s applicability to generate model input timeseries for generic pollutants (N, P and COD/BOD) in addition to priority pollutants
