Unified Messaging Systems: an Evolutionary Overview

    Get PDF
Over the last decade, the widespread demand and use of the internet has changed the direction of the telecommunications industry as it was recognised that the internet could be used as an inexpensive way to handle not only data but also voice communications. This convergence of traditional voice and data technologies towards an IP-based open architecture has been paralleled by a convergence of the internet and mobile communications. As a result of these convergences, unified messaging has emerged as a technically viable service. Integrated messaging services that offer partial unification of different message types are already in the marketplace. This paper asks what unified messaging means and examines underlying architectural developments that are likely to shape the unified messaging applications of the future

Unified Messaging using SIP and RTSP

Traditional answering machines and voice mail services are closed systems, tightly coupled to a single end system, the local PBX or local exchange carrier. Even simple services, such as forwarding voice mail to another user outside the local system, are hard to provide. With the advent of Internet telephony, we need to provide voice and video mail services. This also offers the opportunity to address some of the shortcomings of existing voice mail systems. We list general requirements for a multimedia mail system for Internet telephony. We then propose an architecture using SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) and RTSP (Real-Time Streaming Protocol) and compare various alternative approaches to solving call forwarding, reclaiming and retrieval of messages. We also briefly describe our prototype implementation

As telephony services, mobile services and internet services continue to converge, the prospect of providing Unified Messaging and even Unified Communications becomes increasingly achievable. This paper discusses the growing importance of IP-based networks to Unified Messaging developments and examines some of the key services and protocols that are likely to make Unified Messaging more widely available. In this initial paper, we limit ourselves initially to the unification of text-based messaging using SMS and Email. The approach we make is based on the existing Internet Email framework but will take cognisance of the need to add voice and other non-text based messaging and communications at a later stage. Ultimately, the research project aims to build a working prototype of a generic messaging model that works for both non realtime and real-time communications. This model will provide a framework into which existing and future messaging protocols can be plugged. This paper originated from an applied research project which examined the integration possibilities for various messaging and communications protocol

    Pervasive Messaging

Pervasive messaging is the part of pervasive computing that enables users to communicate with each other. Many of today's electronic messaging systems have their own distinct merits and peculiarities. Pervasive messaging will have to shield the user from these differences. In this paper, we introduce a taxonomy for electronic messaging systems, providing a uniform way to analyze, compare, and discuss electronic messaging systems. With this taxonomy, we analyze the current practice, demonstrating its shortfalls. To overcome these shortfalls, we introduce a novel messaging model: The Unified Messaging System. This system can, in fact, mimic any electronic messaging system, thus providing powerful unified messaging

A new unified messaging system which integrates voice messages, fax and e-mail in a common mailbox has be en developed. The combination of speech and linguistic engineering advances allows a natural oral man-machine interaction with the userwhenaccessingthemessages by phone. Advanced features are supplied such as texts summarization, messages c1assification and notification through the phone of new messages received.Peer Reviewe

This paper describes an unified messaging system which joins voice mail, fax and e-mail access. Its architecture consists in a group of independent servers, each offering an interface between the unified mailbox and an specific terminal equipment: telephone, browser and WAP. Web and WAP access offer visual information, while Text-to-Speech technology is used for e-mail reading through telephonePeer ReviewedPostprint (published version
