    Holistic Simulation of Mobile Robot and Sensor Network Applications Using TrueTime

    The RUNES project defines a complex road tunnel scenario involving multiple mobile robots navigating in sensor network environment. In this paper, a TrueTime simulation model of the tunnel scenario is developed. The TrueTime simulator allows concurrent simulation of the physical robots and their environment, the software in the nodes, the radio communication, the network routing, and the ultra-sound navigation system. The various models are described in detail, and some simulation results obtained from the complete model are presented

    The effect of short-term changes in air pollution on respiratory and cardiovascular morbidity in Nicosia, Cyprus.

Short-paper was submitted for peer-review and appears in proceedings of the conference.This study investigates the effect of daily changes in levels of PM10 on the daily volume of respiratory and cardiovascular admissions in Nicosia, Cyprus during 1995-2004. After controlling for long- (year and month) and short-term (day of the week) patterns as well as the effect of weather in Generalized Additive Poisson models, some positive associations were observed with all-cause and cause-specific admissions. Risk of hospitalization increased stepwise across quartiles of days with increasing levels of PM10 by 1.3% (-0.3, 2.8), 4.9% (3.3, 6.6), 5.6% (3.9, 7.3) as compared to days with the lowest concentrations. For every 10μg/m3 increase in daily average PM10 concentration, there was a 1.2% (-0.1%, 2.4%) increase in cardiovascular admissions. With respects to respiratory admissions, an effect was observed only in the warm season with a 1.8% (-0.22, 3.85) increase in admissions per 10μg/m3 increase in PM10. The effect on respiratory admissions seemed to be much stronger in women and, surprisingly, restricted to people of adult age

    Thermodynamics and Spin Tunneling Dynamics in Ferric Wheels with Excess Spin

    We study theoretically the thermodynamic properties and spin dynamics of a class of magnetic rings closely related to ferric wheels, antiferromagnetic ring systems, in which one of the Fe (III) ions has been replaced by a dopant ion to create an excess spin. Using a coherent-state spin path integral formalism, we derive an effective action for the system in the presence of a magnetic field. We calculate the functional dependence of the magnetization and tunnel splitting on the magnetic field and show that the parameters of the spin Hamiltonian can be inferred from the magnetization curve. We study the spin dynamics in these systems and show that quantum tunneling of the Neel vector also results in tunneling of the total magnetization. Hence, the spin correlation function shows a signature of Neel vector tunneling, and electron spin resonance (ESR) techniques or AC susceptibility measurements can be used to measure both the tunneling and the decoherence rate. We compare our results with exact diagonalization studies on small ring systems. Our results can be easily generalized to a wide class of nanomagnets, such as ferritin.Comment: 15 pages, 5 figure

    An evaluation of plume tracking as a strategy for gas source localization in turbulent wind flows

    Gas source localization is likely the most direct application of a mobile robot endowed with gas sensing capabilities. Multiple algorithms have been proposed to locate the gas source within a known environment, ranging from bio-inspired to probabilistic ones. However, their application to real-world conditions still remains a major issue due to the great difficulties those scenarios bring, among others, the common presence of obstacles which hamper the movement of the robot and notably ncrease the complexity of the gas dispersion. In this work, we consider a plume tracking algorithm based on the well-known silkworm moth strategy and analyze its performance when facing different realistic environments characterized by the presence of obstacles and turbulent wind flows. We rely on computational fluid dynamics and the open source gas dispersion simulator GADEN to generate realistic gas distributions in scenarios where the presence of obstacles breaks down the ideal downwind plume. We first propose some modifications to the original silkworm moth algorithm in order to deal with the presence of obstacles in the environment (avoiding collisions) and then analyze its performance within four challenging environments.Universidad de Málaga.     DTER: Schedule Optimal RF Energy Request and Harvest for Internet of Things

    We propose a new energy harvesting strategy that uses a dedicated energy source (ES) to optimally replenish energy for radio frequency (RF) energy harvesting powered Internet of Things. Specifically, we develop a two-step dual tunnel energy requesting (DTER) strategy that minimizes the energy consumption on both the energy harvesting device and the ES. Besides the causality and capacity constraints that are investigated in the existing approaches, DTER also takes into account the overhead issue and the nonlinear charge characteristics of an energy storage component to make the proposed strategy practical. Both offline and online scenarios are considered in the second step of DTER. To solve the nonlinear optimization problem of the offline scenario, we convert the design of offline optimal energy requesting problem into a classic shortest path problem and thus a global optimal solution can be obtained through dynamic programming (DP) algorithms. The online suboptimal transmission strategy is developed as well. Simulation study verifies that the online strategy can achieve almost the same energy efficiency as the global optimal solution in the long term

In this workshop, results from the u-2010 and HNPS projects will be presented and discussed. The u-2010 project’s objective was to provide the most capable means of communication to everybody required to act in case of accident, catastrophe or crisis, as well as the most The International Emergency Management Society 17 th Annual Conference (TIEMS2010), Beijing (China), June 8-12 2010 effective access to that information,. The project aimed to use any existing or (future) planned communication infrastructure to do this. The HNPS project’s purpose is to design and implement interaction capacities for important public safety applications. These may be at a technical level (interaction between different radio technologies or different video applications) or at a functional level (the collaboration between different agencies)
