E4 Thematic Network
This Thematic Network aims at developing the European dimension of Higher Engineering Education by enhancing the compatibility of the many diverse routes to the profession of engineer, by facilitating greater mobility and integration of skilled personnel throughout Europe, by favouring a mutual exchange of skills and competences and providing a platform for communication between academics and professionals. Five main activities have been organised under the overall umbrella of the Thematic Network. The work contains 6 volumes
Cities of the South, Cities of the North
In the wake of the end of the cold-war and the demise of the tripartite conceptual division of the First, Second and Third Worlds, the latter concept has been superseded by the notion of the ‘Global South’. This notion is a flexible one referring to the developing nations of the once-colonized sections of the globe. The concept does not merely register shifts in geopolitics and in the respective affiliations of nations and the economic transformations that have occurred. It also registers an emergent perception of a new set of relationships between nations of the South. It is the task of this project to explore those ‘lateral’ south-south cultural connections by mobilizing a network of prominent Global-South universities (UFF, Brazil; UNAM, Mexico; Wits, South Africa; UCAD, Senegal; JNU, India) with other universities in the southern hemisphere (UWA, Australia; SNU, Korea).

Research activities in the first two cycles of biosystems engineering university studies in Malta
The University of Malta is harmonising all programme offer to be compliant with the
Bologna process which envisages the establishment of the European Higher
Education Area by 2010. Research activities at the University of Malta date back to
the seventies and were mainly carried out by the Department of Physiology and
Biochemistry of the Faculty of Medicine. Following accession within the European
Union, significant investment has been committed to structure and support research,
in particularly in areas that provide value-added to the country's economy.
Consequently; thematic, project-based funding prevails over bottom-up, openended
research programmes and measures, giving priority to academia-industry
collaboration.peer-reviewe
Enhancing the attractiveness of European study programs in biosystems engineering in Malta
The National Strategy for Research and Innovation for 2007-2010, entitled 'Building and
Sustaining the Research and Innovation Enabling Framework' is the pivot on which the
Maltese efforts to enhance the attractiveness of Science and Technology is based.
Four main entities, namely The Malta Council for Science and Technology, University of
Malta, Ministry of Education, Youth and Employment and National Student Travel
Foundation come together to complement each other and the national educational
system through a variety of different but complementary activities. Information is freely
available to students from the websites of the various entities.peer-reviewe
The thematic network SAFER EURORO : an integrated approach to safe European roro ferry design
For a period of more than 10 years, a safety culture approach has been promoted through the theme'Design for Safety,' which aims at integrating safety cost effectively in the ship design process. There isa considerable wealth of information amassed over these years of research and development on safetycriticalareas. One of the main elements of the research and development (R&D) work is the assurance ofsafety within the ship design process, in the continuous search for improving the current state of affairs.Through bold steps in the direction advocated by 'Design for Safety,' it is slowly but steadily beingrecognized that this approach can greatly contribute to the overall cost-effective improvement of safety inshipping while nurturing the evolution of proper practice in the field. On this background, the paper attempts a thorough overview of related R&D developments over the lastdecade. Particular emphasis is placed on the developments that have taken place as part of the activitiesof the Thematic Network SAFER EURORO and associated research projects, which have led to thedevelopment of a recent major research initiative, the Integrated Project SAFEDOR, which is expected tolead research development in the area for the years to come
Women's Studies in Poland
Athena: Advanced Thematic Network in Activities in Women's Studies in Europe. Report from ATHENA panel of experts 1.a.:
A Cross-European, Comparative Study of Degrees, Qualifications and Professional Outlets of
Women's/Gender/Feminist Studies.
Panel coordinator: Nina Lykke, University of Southern Denmark, Denmark,
and Linkoeping University, SwedenThis report will briefly address the changes in higher education that occurred
in Poland over the last ten years in terms of university structures and degree
structures, the research policies and equal opportunity policies, and will
subsequently focus on the history of women’s movement after 1989. It will finally
present a case study of the institutionalization of Women’s Studies Center at the
University of Lódz, one of the five major universities in Poland. The specific focus
of this analysis will be a demonstration how conservative approaches to education
in terms of the overall structure of the universities as well as the degree structure
hinder the development of Women’s/Gender Studies in Poland.ATHENA is the Advanced Thematic Network in Activities in Women's Studies in Europe,

Towards an Ontology Metadata Standard
In this poster, we present (i) a proposal for a metadata standard, known as Ontology Metadata Vocabulary (OMV) which is based on discussions in the EU IST thematic network of excellence Knowledge Web1 and (ii) two complementary reference
implementations which show the benefit of such a standard in
decentralized and centralized scenarios, i.e. the Oyster P2P
system and the Onthology metadata portal
The transition from Agricultural to Biosystems Engineering University Studies in Europe
This paper describes the main result produced by the ERABEE (Education & Research in Biosystems Engineering in Europe) Thematic Network. The ERABEE Thematic Network was a follow-up of a previous Thematic Network called USAEE (University Studies of Agricultural Engineering in Europe) and both were co-financed by the European Community in the framework of the LLP Programme (Lifelong Learning Programme). The innovative and novel goal of the ERABEE Network was to promote the critical and inevitable transition from the traditional discipline of Agricultural Engineering to the emerging discipline of Biosystems Engineering, exploiting along this direction the outcomes accomplished by the the earlier USAEE Thematic Network. It also aimed at enhancing the compatibility among the new programmes of Biosystems Engineering, supporting their recognition and accreditation at European and International level and facilitating greater mobility of skilled personnel, researchers and students
Socrates thematic network to enhance European teaching of operations and supply chain management: goals, tasks and preliminary results
The EurOMA-sponsored THENEXOM network has been approved by the European Commission
through its Socrates community action programme. THENEXOM’s short-term goal is to analyse the
present state of Operations and Supply Chain Management in European universities and to identify
strengths and weaknesses in order to instigate the use of better practices. A census is being drawn up
of OM teachers throughout the 24 countries (and 27 universities) making up the network. A survey
can then be taken of the teaching-staff, content and methods employed. The network’s medium-term
aim is to tighten links between teaching, research and business practice by reducing imbalances. In
compliance with EU recommendations, strategic connections are being sought with America and
Asia to expand aforesaid objectives and actions throughout the world.
