    Spacecraft formation-flying using potential functions

    A group of small spacecraft able to change their relative position and attitude through the use of the potential function method is discussed. The spacecraft shapes, sizes and manoeuvring capabilities are not identical, although all are assumed to manoeuvre using continuous thrusters. A hyperbolic form of the attractive potential function is used to reduce actuator effort by using natural orbital motion to approaching the goal configuration. A superquadric repulsive potential with 3D a rigid object representation is then used to provide an accurate representation of the shape of spacecraft in the potential function. As the spacecraft start away from their goal, a parabolic attractive potential is inefficient as the control force increases with distance from the goal. Using a hyperbolic attractive potential, the control force is independent of the distance to goal, ensuring smooth manoeuvring towards the goal with a bound actuator effort

    Low Thrust Augmented Spacecraft Formation-Flying

    Ballistic spacecraft formation-flying with zero thrust has great utility, but it is limited to a comparatively small set of relative trajectories. However, through the application of continuous low thrust, rich new families of formation-flying trajectories can be accessed. This new and novel problem provides a wide range of potentially useful alternatives to natural ballistic formationflying. In this paper, the standard Clohessy-Wiltshire approximation of relative spacecraft motion is used to investigate the motion of a chase spacecraft about a target spacecraft which is in a circular Earth orbit. Families of non-Keplerian relative motion are systematically explored, generating analytical representations of the relative motion trajectories and the required thrust commands for both simple static formations and more complex new forced relative orbits. It is found that the impulse, and therefore propellant, required for maintenance of such relative orbits is small, and so the concept of low thrust augmented formation-flying is deliverable in the near term with existing thruster technology

    Collision and evaporation avoidance for spacecraft formation

    <p>Formation flying is an extremely promising approach to space operations with the potential to enable new types of missions and providing substantial increase in the performance of future space science and Earth observation applications. To successfully validate formation flying however requires the development of specific technologies and methodologies, which are beyond current state-of-the art in a wide range of diverse fields such as metrology and spacecraft guidance, navigation and control. A number of missions are currently under different stages of development to implement some of these stringent requirements.</p> <p>The paper develops and compares collision avoidance algorithms, demonstrating them within a 6 degrees of freedom, multi-spacecraft environment. At first a number of different collision avoidance scenarios will be identified alongside the triggers that will cause the algorithms to be activated. Once activated the collision avoidance algorithm must ensure corrective action to avoid catastrophic consequences to the mission.</p&gt

    Spacecraft formation flying using bifurcating potential fields

    The distributed control of spacecraft flying in formation has been shown to have advantages over conventional single spacecraft systems. These include scalability, flexibility and robustness to failures. This paper considers the real problem of actuator saturation and shows how bound control laws can be developed that allow pattern formation and reconfigurability in a formation of spacecraft using bifurcating potential fields. In addition the stability of the system is ensured mathematically through dynamical systems theory

    Optimal design for a NEO tracking spacecraft formation

    The following paper presents the design and methodology for developing an optimal set of spacecraft orbits for a NEO tracking mission. The spacecraft is designed to fly in close formation with the asteroid, avoiding the nonlinear gravity field produced by the asteroid. A periodic orbit is developed, and the initial conditions are optimized by use of a global optimizer for constrained nonlinear problems. The asteroid Apophis (NEO 2004 MN4) was used as the case study due the potential impact with Earth in 2036, and the need for more accurate ephemerides

    Pattern transition in spacecraft formation flying using bifurcating potential field

    Many new and exciting space mission concepts have developed around spacecraft formation flying, allowing for autonomous distributed systems that can be robust, scalable and flexible. This paper considers the development of a new methodology for the control of multiple spacecraft. Based on the artificial potential function method, research in this area is extended by considering the new approach of using bifurcation theory as a means of controlling the transition between different formations. For real, safety or mission critical applications it is important to ensure that desired behaviours will occur. Through dynamical systems theory, this paper also aims to provide a step in replacing traditional algorithm validation with mathematical proof, supported through simulation. This is achieved by determining the non-linear stability properties of the system, thus proving the existence or not of desired behaviours. Practical considerations such as the issue of actuator saturation and communication limitations are addressed, with the development of a new bounded control law based on bifurcating potential fields providing the key contribution of this paper. To illustrate spacecraft formation flying using the new methodology formation patterns are considered in low-Earth-orbit utilising the Clohessy-Wiltshire relative linearised equations of motion. It is shown that a formation of spacecraft can be driven safely onto equally spaced projected circular orbits, autonomously reconfiguring between them, whilst satisfying constraints made regarding each spacecraft

    Six-axis decentralized control design for spacecraft formation flying mission

    This contribution addresses the control design for the three-spacecraft formation flying interferometry mission Pegase. The operational mode considered is the high-precision nulling phase. The control design has as major objective the minimization of the variance of the controlled outputs, e.g. the optical path difference. The payload performance demands are shown to be fulfilled in spite of orbital disturbances, solar radiation pressure as well as sensor and actuator noise. Furthermore, a novel iterative algorithm is proposed, capable of designing decentralized H2-suboptimal controllers. These controllers consist of a set of individual closed loops on board the different spacecraft which only use locally available measurements, forces and torques. This approach reduces communication bandwidth and enhances robustness concerning faulty communication links. Finally, the performance loss due to decentralization is investigated
