    Extracting information from short messages

    Get PDF
Much currently transmitted information takes the form of e-mails or SMS text messages and so extracting information from such short messages is increasingly important. The words in a message can be partitioned into the syntactic structure, terms from the domain of discourse and the data being transmitted. This paper describes a light-weight Information Extraction component which uses pattern matching to separate the three aspects: the structure is supplied as a template; domain terms are the metadata of a data source (or their synonyms), and data is extracted as those words matching placeholders in the templates

Quantum interactive proofs with short messages

This paper considers three variants of quantum interactive proof systems in which short (meaning logarithmic-length) messages are exchanged between the prover and verifier. The first variant is one in which the verifier sends a short message to the prover, and the prover responds with an ordinary, or polynomial-length, message; the second variant is one in which any number of messages can be exchanged, but where the combined length of all the messages is logarithmic; and the third variant is one in which the verifier sends polynomially many random bits to the prover, who responds with a short quantum message. We prove that in all of these cases the short messages can be eliminated without changing the power of the model, so the first variant has the expressive power of QMA and the second and third variants have the expressive power of BQP. These facts are proved through the use of quantum state tomography, along with the finite quantum de Finetti theorem for the first variant.Comment: 15 pages, published versio

Correlated dynamics in egocentric communication networks

    Get PDF
We investigate the communication sequences of millions of people through two different channels and analyze the fine grained temporal structure of correlated event trains induced by single individuals. By focusing on correlations between the heterogeneous dynamics and the topology of egocentric networks we find that the bursty trains usually evolve for pairs of individuals rather than for the ego and his/her several neighbors thus burstiness is a property of the links rather than of the nodes. We compare the directional balance of calls and short messages within bursty trains to the average on the actual link and show that for the trains of voice calls the imbalance is significantly enhanced, while for short messages the balance within the trains increases. These effects can be partly traced back to the technological constrains (for short messages) and partly to the human behavioral features (voice calls). We define a model that is able to reproduce the empirical results and may help us to understand better the mechanisms driving technology mediated human communication dynamics.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figure

Random Access Protocols with Collision Resolution in a Noncoherent Setting

Wireless systems are increasingly used for Machine-Type Communication (MTC), where the users sporadically send very short messages. In such a setting, the overhead imposed by channel estimation is substantial, thereby demanding noncoherent communication. In this paper we consider a noncoherent setup in which users randomly access the medium to send short messages to a common receiver. We propose a transmission scheme based on Gabor frames, where each user has a dedicated codebook of M possible codewords, while the codebook simultaneously serves as an ID for the user. The scheme is used as a basis for a simple protocol for collision resolution.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures; EDIT: A version of this work has been submitted for publication in the IEEE Wireless Communication Letters Journa

The sentiment analysis of tweets as a new tool to measure public perception of male erectile and ejaculatory dysfunctions

Twitter is a social network based on "tweets," short messages of up to 280 characters. Social media has been investigated in health care research to ascertain positive or negative feelings associated with several conditions but never in sexual medicin

Published Privacy Rights via Short Messages

Short messages in the form of advertisements are increasingly being accepted by the public through their cell phones. The public never specifically gave the phone number to the party sending the advertising message. This is considered to be even more annoying because the short message advertisement violates the principles of consumer protection. This study aims to determine and analyze the extent of privacy violations against the spread of spam information via short messages. This study uses the empirical normative method, namely research conducted with the approach of legal norms or substances, legal principles, legal postulates, and legal comparisons, using a conceptual approach. The results show that short messages in the form of offers that are not directly related to the services used by cellular subscribers must be a concern for customer convenience

Short Messages Spam Filtering Using Sentiment Analysis

    Get PDF
In the same way that short instant messages are more and more used, spam and non-legitimate campaigns through this type of communication systems are growing up. Those campaigns, besides being an illegal online activity, are a direct threat to the privacy of the users. Previous short messages spam filtering techniques focus on automatic text classification and do not take message polarity into account. Focusing on phone SMS messages, this work demonstrates that it is possible to improve spam filtering in short message services using sentiment analysis techniques. Using a publicly available labelled (spam/legitimate) SMS dataset, we calculate the polarity of each message and aggregate the polarity score to the original dataset, creating new datasets. We compare the results of the best classifiers and filters over the different datasets (with and without polarity) in order to demonstrate the influence of the polarity. Experiments show that polarity score improves the SMS spam classification, on the one hand, reaching to a 98.91% of accuracy. And on the other hand, obtaining a result of 0 false positives with 98.67% of accuracy
