Polarization and photometric observations of the gamma-ray blazar PG 1553+113
We present the results of an observational photo-polarimetry campaign of the
blazar PG 1553+113 at optical wavelengths. The blazar was recently detected at
very high energies (> 100 GeV) by the H.E.S.S and MAGIC gamma-ray Cherenkov
telescopes.
Our high-temporal resolution data show significant variations in the linear
polarization percentage and position angle at inter-night time-scales, while at
shorter (intra-night) time-scales both parameters varied less significantly, if
at all. Changes in the polarization angle seem to be common in gamma-ray
emitting blazars. Simultaneous differential photometry (through the B and R
bands) shows no significant variability in the total optical flux. We provide B
and R magnitudes, along with a finding chart, for a set of field stars suitable

A Circumbinary Planet in Orbit Around the Short-Period White-Dwarf Eclipsing Binary RR Cae
By using six new determined mid-eclipse times together with those collected
from the literature, we found that the Observed-Calculated (O-C) curve of RR
Cae shows a cyclic change with a period of 11.9 years and an amplitude of
14.3s, while it undergoes an upward parabolic variation (revealing a long-term
period increase at a rate of dP/dt =+4.18(+-0.20)x10^(-12). The cyclic change
was analyzed for the light-travel time effect that arises from the
gravitational influence of a third companion. The mass of the third body was
determined to be M_3*sin i' = 4.2(+-0.4) M_{Jup} suggesting that it is a
circumbinary giant planet when its orbital inclination is larger than 17.6
degree. The orbital separation of the circumbinary planet from the central
eclipsing binary is about 5.3(+-0.6)AU. The period increase is opposite to the
changes caused by angular momentum loss via magnetic braking or/and
gravitational radiation, nor can it be explained by the mass transfer between
both components because of its detached configuration. These indicate that the
observed upward parabolic change is only a part of a long-period (longer than
26.3 years) cyclic variation, which may reveal the presence of another giant
circumbinary planet in a wide orbit.Comment: It will be published in the MNRA
The Massive Wolf-Rayet Binary SMC WR7
We present a study of optical spectra of the Wolf--Rayet star AzV 336a (= SMC
WR7) in the Small Magellanic Cloud. Our study is based on data obtained at
several Observatories between 1988 and 2001. We find SMC WR7 to be a double
lined WN+O6 spectroscopic binary with an orbital period of 19.56 days. The
radial velocities of the He absorption lines of the O6 component and the strong
He{\sc ii} emission at 4686\AA of the WN component describe antiphased
orbital motions. However, they show a small phase shift of 1 day. We
discuss possible explanations for this phase shift. The amplitude of the radial
velocity variations of He {\sc ii} emission is twice that of the absorption
lines. The binary components have fairly high minimum masses, 18
\modot and 34 \modot for the WN and O6 components, respectively.Comment: Accepted by MNRA
Revisiting the theoretical DBV (V777 Her) instability strip: the MLT theory of convection
We reexamine the theoretical instability domain of pulsating DB white dwarfs
(DBV or V777 Her variables). We performed an extensive -mode nonadiabatic
pulsation analysis of DB evolutionary models considering a wide range of
stellar masses, for which the complete evolutionary stages of their progenitors
from the ZAMS, through the thermally pulsing AGB and born-again phases, the
domain of the PG1159 stars, the hot phase of DO white dwarfs, and then the DB
white dwarf stage have been considered. We explicitly account for the evolution
of the chemical abundance distribution due to time-dependent chemical diffusion
processes. We examine the impact of the different prescriptions of the MLT
theory of convection and the effects of small amounts of H in the almost
He-pure atmospheres of DB stars on the precise location of the theoretical blue

Discovery of a deep Seyfert-2 galaxy at z = 0.222 behind NGC 300
We report on the unveiling of the nature of the unidentified X-ray source
3XMM J005450.3-373849 as a Seyfert-2 galaxy located behind the spiral galaxy
NGC 300 using Hubble Space Telescope data, new spectroscopic Gemini
observations and available XMM-Newton and Chandra data. We show that the X-ray
source is positionally coincident with an extended optical source, composed by
a marginally resolved nucleus/bulge, surrounded by an elliptical disc-like
feature and two symmetrical outer rings. The optical spectrum is typical of a
Seyfert-2 galaxy redshifted to z=0.222 +/- 0.001, which confirms that the
source is not physically related to NGC 300. At this redshift the source would
be located at 909+/-4 Mpc (comoving distance in the standard model). The X-ray
spectra of the source are well-fitted by an absorbed power-law model. By tying
between the six available spectra, we found a variable index
running from ~2 in 2000-2001 years, to 1.4-1.6 in the 2005-2014
period. Alternatively, by tying , we found variable absorption columns
of N_H ~ 0.34 x cm in 2000-2001 years, and 0.54-0.75 x
cm in the 2005-2014 period. Although we cannot distinguish
between an spectral or absorption origin, from the derived unabsorbed X-ray
fluxes, we are able to assure the presence of long-term X-ray variability.
Furthermore, the unabsorbed X-ray luminosities of 0.8-2 x 10 erg
s derived in the X-ray band are in agreement with a weakly obscured
Seyfert-2 AGN at .Comment: MNRAS, accepte
Cytochrome P450associated with insecticide resistance catalyzes cuticular hydrocarbon production in Anopheles gambiae.
The role of cuticle changes in insecticide resistance in the major malaria vector Anopheles gambiae was assessed. The rate of internalization of 14C deltamethrin was significantly slower in a resistant strain than in a susceptible strain. Topical application of an acetone insecticide formulation to circumvent lipid-based uptake barriers decreased the resistance ratio by ∼50%. Cuticle analysis by electron microscopy and characterization of lipid extracts indicated that resistant mosquitoes had a thicker epicuticular layer and a significant increase in cuticular hydrocarbon (CHC) content (∼29%). However, the CHC profile and relative distribution were similar in resistant and susceptible insects. The cellular localization and in vitro activity of two P450 enzymes, CYP4G16 and CYP4G17, whose genes are frequently overexpressed in resistant Anopheles mosquitoes, were analyzed. These enzymes are potential orthologs of the CYP4G1/2 enzymes that catalyze the final step of CHC biosynthesis in Drosophila and Musca domestica, respectively. Immunostaining indicated that both CYP4G16 and CYP4G17 are highly abundant in oenocytes, the insect cell type thought to secrete hydrocarbons. However, an intriguing difference was indicated; CYP4G17 occurs throughout the cell, as expected for a microsomal P450, but CYP4G16 localizes to the periphery of the cell and lies on the cytoplasmic side of the cell membrane, a unique position for a P450 enzyme. CYP4G16 and CYP4G17 were functionally expressed in insect cells. CYP4G16 produced hydrocarbons from a C18 aldehyde substrate and thus has bona fide decarbonylase activity similar to that of dmCYP4G1/2. The data support the hypothesis that the coevolution of multiple mechanisms, including cuticular barriers, has occurred in highly pyrethroid-resistant An. gambiae.Fil: Balabanidou, Vasileia. Resolving the kinematics of the discs around Galactic B[e] supergiants
B[e] supergiants are luminous evolved massive stars. The mass-loss during this phase creates a complex circumstellar environment with atomic, molecular, and dusty regions usually found in rings or disc-like structures. For a better comprehension of the mechanisms behind the formation of these rings, detailed knowledge about their structure and dynamics is essential. To address that, we obtained high-resolution optical and near-infrared (near-IR) spectra for eight selected Galactic B[e] supergiants, for which CO emission has been detected. Assuming Keplerian rotation for the disc, we combine the kinematics obtained from the CO bands in the near-IR with those obtained by fitting the forbidden emission [OI] λ5577, [O I] λλ6300,6363, and [Ca II] λλ7291,7323 lines in the optical to probe the disc structure. We find that the emission originates from multiple ring structures around all B[e] supergiants, with each one of them displaying a unique combination of rings regardless of whether the object is part of a binary system. The confirmed binaries display spectroscopic variations of their line intensities and profiles as well as photometric variability, whereas the ring structures around the single stars are stable.Fil: Maravelias, G.. Variation in the distribution of Corbicula species (Mollusca: Bivalvia: Corbiculidae) after 25 years of its introduction in the Río de la Plata, Argentina
In 1981, Corbicula fluminea (Müller, 1774) and C. largillierti (Philippi, 1844) were recorded at the Río de la Plata River. During the 1980?s, C. largillierti was found on a continuous fringe in the shore of that river, while C. fluminea was only found North of Buenos Aires? harbor. Ten years later, C. fluminea spread to Punta Indio, while C. largillierti remained restricted to tributary streams. The density and size frequency distribution of both species were compared with previous data from samples performed in the same area in 1985?1989. The aim of this research was to determine whether the densities of both species decreased; whether C. fluminea is still more abundant than C. largillierti; and whether the size frequency distributions indicate different population structures from those observed in the end of the 1980?s. Nine localities from the river shore were sampled, and each individual was identified and measured. The size of C. fluminea varied between 2 and 39 mm, showing the highest frequency of individuals between 20 and 25 mm; furthermore the density decreased 90% in 2015/2016. No speci-mens of C. largillierti were found. In conclusion, the populations of Corbicula inhabiting the Río de la Plata River are retracting.Fil: Reshaid, Yamila Veronica. Proconiini sharpshooters of Argentina, with notes on its distribution, host plants, and natural enemies
The American tribe Proconiini (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae: Cicadellinae) is one of the largest groups of xylem-feeding insects and includes the majority of the known vectors of xylem-born phytopathogenic organisms. The significance of the pathogens that this group transmits gives them an important role as pests, mostly for citrus fruit, grapes, and almonds. Knowledge of these Hemiptera in Argentina is insufficient and fragmentary. Thus one of the aims of this paper is to summarize the available information of the Proconiini sharpshooters in Argentina. In addition, 14 species are mentioned for the first time in the country, and new distributional data are given for 18 species. Thirty-four new associations between sharpshooters and host plants are recorded. Quantum phase diagram of a frustrated antiferromagnet on the bilayer honeycomb lattice
We study the spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a bilayer honeycomb
lattice including interlayer frustration. Using a set of complementary
approaches, namely Schwinger bosons, dimer series expansion, bond operators,
and exact diagonalization, we map out the quantum phase diagram. Analyzing
ground state energies and elementary excitation spectra, we find four distinct
phases, corresponding to three collinear magnetic long range ordered states,
and one quantum disordered interlayer dimer phase. We detail, that the latter
phase is adiabatically connected to an "exact" singlet product ground state of
the the bilayer which exists along a line of maximum interlayer frustration.
