    Rehearsals

    Get PDF
This artifact will be an article that discusses a major aspect of Kazemi’s and Ghousseini’s research, rehearsals. Rehearsals are a form of simulation where novice teachers learn complex teaching methods through practice, learning by doing. It is a form of simulation that allows teachers to share and develop teaching methods. This article will relate the concept of rehearsals back to the concept of “teaching teachers to teach” by exploring what rehearsals are and how they assist teachers. It will discuss how through rehearsals, teachers, especially math teachers, gain insight into the child\u27s perspective while being taught. This allows the teacher to better communicate the material. Rehearsals are a very important concept in Kazemi’s and Ghousseini’s research, and will be discussed here

Rehearsal Injuries in Soft-Soled Character Shoes: Injury Rate of Female Collegiate Dancers Wearing Soft-Soled Character Shoes with 2.5 or 3.0 Inch Heels in Musical Theatre Rehearsals

High-heeled shoes (HHS) have been known to present biomechanical imbalances in lower-leg mechanics at the pedestrian level, but have not been thoroughly studied in the context of highly dynamic movement, such as dance. In order to analyze the effects of 2.5-inch and 3.0-inch soft-soled character shoes (CS) worn by female collegiate musical theatre dancers during rehearsals, selected subjects completed a written questionnaire, the star balance excursion test, and a heel raise test. It was predicted that both heel heights would promote irregularities in subjects’ sense of balance and lower leg stamina, while 3.0 inch CS would cause greater rates of injury overall. The resulting data showed that while there was no difference in the number of reported injuries among subjects wearing either 2.5-inch CS or 3.0-inch CS during rehearsals, there was less range of motion (RoM) and stability observed in 3.0-inch CS. The median number of heel rises from the heel raise test was approximately 10, showing a wide range of strength and stamina among subjects individually. Additionally, only 35% of subjects reported warming up in CS before rehearsals, and 13% reported cooling down after dancing in rehearsal. These results indicate a great need for supplemental strengthening for dancers, as well as the development of a comprehensive warm-up and cool-down aiming to prepare dancers to effectively wear CS for extended periods of time and continue to counter potential injury

A Parametric Analysis of Rehearsal Opportunities During Training of Functional Analysis Conditions

The purpose of the current studies was to evaluate the use of rehearsal during training on the fidelity of functional analysis conditions. Study 1 used a parametric analysis of the number of rehearsal opportunities to examine the effects on the fidelity with which participants implemented three functional analysis conditions. One, three, and 10 rehearsals were examined, which were counterbalanced across three undergraduate participants. Next, participants experienced additional rehearsals until they met criterion. On average, participants met criterion after 7.6 rehearsals (4, 5.7, and 13 rehearsals for the one, three, and 10 rehearsal conditions, respectively). Study 2 incorporated a video model to evaluate the effects of the number of rehearsal opportunities with a behavioral skills training package with 18 undergraduate participants. Results indicate the addition of the video model decreased the average number of rehearsals (M = 6.3) necessary to meet criterion by just over one and a half rehearsals (3.5, 4.8, and 11.5 rehearsals for the one, three, and 10 rehearsal conditions, respectively) compared to Study 1. A training acceptability survey suggested rehearsal with feedback was more acceptable than instructions and the full behavioral skills training package was highly acceptable

Social decision-making driven by artistic explore-exploit tension

We studied social decision-making in the rule-based improvisational dance ThereThere MightMight BeBe OthersOthers, where dancers make in-the-moment compositional choices. Rehearsals provided a natural test-bed with communication restricted to non-verbal cues. We observed a key artistic explore-exploit tension in which the dancers switched between exploitation of existing artistic opportunities and riskier exploration of new ones. We investigated how the rules influenced the dynamics using rehearsals together with a model generalized from evolutionary dynamics. We tuned the rules to heighten the tension and modeled nonlinear fitness and feedback dynamics for mutation rate to capture the observed temporal phasing of the dancers' exploration-versus-exploitation. Using bifurcation analysis, we identified key controls of the tension and showed how they could shape the decision-making dynamics of the model much like turning a "dial" in the instructions to the dancers could shape the dance. The investigation became an integral part of the development of the dance

Teacher Instructional Language and Student Experience in Middle School Choral Rehearsals

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between teacher language use and student quality of experience during choral rehearsals. Particularly at the middle school level, few data exist about the ways in which instructional discourse during rehearsals affects student experience. Existing research suggests the use of instructional scaffolding as effective in enhancing student learning and experience, but this had not been previously investigated during music rehearsals. The language of two teachers during 20 rehearsals was recorded and examined for evidence of instructional scaffolding and sequential units of instruction; student self-reports of affect, challenge and skill were correlated with the teachers\u27 language. Students reported higher levels of challenge and skill (often referred to as flow experience ) during rehearsals with greater use of scaffolding language. Analysis suggests that a strong positive relationship exists between teachers\u27 use of scaffolding language, complete sequential units of instruction, and quality of student experience during middle school choral rehearsals

Climate change, blackouts and society: dress rehearsals for the future

Blackouts serve as a reminder of how dependent mankind has become on electricity and the appliances it powers. Whatever the cause of a blackout, there are patterns in the consequences that take place as a result. These include not only measurable economic losses but also social consequences that are sometimes immeasurable. This paper reviews almost 50 different significant power-outage events that have occurred in 26 countries, mostly over the last decade. The unpredictable nature of blackouts limits the collection of field data. Hence the data in this paper are collected from reputable media coverage of the events. The patterns that are analysed include economic loss, food, health, crime, social unrest, transport and inequalities While many blackouts are caused by systems failures, there is a growing trend of failures due to inadequate energy; whether due to depletion of resources such as oil and coal or due to the vagaries of the climate in the supply of renewable energy. As we enter the period of peak oil and climate change the security of energy supply for electricity generation is under threat. Understanding the nature of blackouts is more than just a record of past systems failures; blackouts are dress rehearsals for the future

Rehearsing popular music: Exploring opportunities for supporting learning in the pop/rock band

There seems little reported about group-based rehearsals of popular music and the peer learning opportunities that might arise from this activity. Although there are an increasing number of studies exploring approaches to the assessment of musical ensembles, these often focus on performance rather than rehearsing and, typically, do not specifically address popular music courses (Hunter, 2006)
