Road traffic pollution monitoring and modelling tools and the UK national air quality strategy.

    Get PDF
This paper provides an assessment of the tools required to fulfil the air quality management role now expected of local authorities within the UK. The use of a range of pollution monitoring tools in assessing air quality is discussed and illustrated with evidence from a number of previous studies of urban background and roadside pollution monitoring in Leicester. A number of approaches to pollution modelling currently available for deployment are examined. Subsequently, the modelling and monitoring tools are assessed against the requirements of Local Authorities establishing Air Quality Management Areas. Whilst the paper examines UK based policy, the study is of wider international interest

The remote monitoring of atmospheric pollutants can now be performed in several ways. Laser radar techniques have proven their ability to reveal the spatial distribution of different species or particles. Classical optical techniques can also be used, but yield the average concentration over a given path and hence no range resolution. One such technique is Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy, DOAS. Such schemes can be used to monitor paths that a preliminary lidar investigation has shown to be of interest. Having previously had access to a mobile lidar system, a new system has been completed. The construction builds on experience from using the other system and it is meant to be more of a mobile optical laboratory than just a lidar system. A complete system description is given along with some preliminary usage. Future uses are contemplated

Computer program determines gas constituents from measurements of mass/peak-height spectrum from residual gas analyzer. Applications of program include residual gas analysis for work in space environmental simulators, space environment contamination, and air pollution monitoring

New microwave spectrometer/imager has possible applications for pollution monitoring

Microwave imager forms thermal-emissivity image of solid portion of planet Venus and provides data on the planet's atmosphere, surface, terminator, and temperature changes. These thermally produced multifrequency microwaves for image production of temperature profiles can be applied to water pollution monitoring, agriculture, and forestry survey

Trabajo presentado a la 10th Annual International Conference on Digital Government Research: Social Networks: Making Connections between Citizens, Data and Government, celebrada en Puebla (México) del 17 al 21 de mayo de 2009.In this paper we present a new approach to monitor noise pollution involving citizens and built upon the notions of participatory sensing and citizen science. We enable citizens to measure their personal exposure to noise in their everyday environment by using GPS-equipped mobile phones as noise sensors. The geo-localised measures and user-generated meta-data can be automatically sent and shared online with the public to contribute to the collective noise mapping of cities. Our prototype, called NoiseTube, can be found online. This work was partially supported by the EU under contract IST- 34721 (TAGora). The TAGora project is funded by the Future and Emerging Technologies program (IST-FET) of the European Commission. Pollution monitoring system

An investigation was undertaken to identify those photographic laboratory by-products which can produce harmful reactions if released untreated. After identification of these by-products, specific monitoring systems for each of the offending ions were investigated and recommendations for implementation are presented. Appropriate monitoring systems are discussed

    Marine pollution monitoring using mussels

Pollution is a major problem that has negative effects on all of the planet’s ecosystems, including the oceans. In many parts of the region, economic development has been most active in coastal zones, putting enormous pressures on coastal ecosystems. Coastal and marine water pollution has increased throughout the world, mainly due to direct discharges from rivers, increased surface rim-off and drainage from expanding port areas, oil spil sand other contaminants from shipping, and domestic and industrial effluent

Microwave rotational spectroscopy: A physical technique for specific pollutant monitoring

An attempt was made to present substantial evidence that microwave rotational spectroscopy can be developed for use in air pollution monitoring. Work with the diode-cavity spectrometer shows it to be capable to detecting small concentrations on NO2, SO2, H2,CO, and NH3 gas with very high specificity
