JESTIVE DIVLJE BILJKE ISTRE
spontanee siano presenti in Istria presentandole in forma tabellare, grazie
intenzivnoj terenskoj aktivnosti.

Due to their important and diverse properties, together with their thermal and mechanical stability, mixed transition metal oxides having perovskite crystal structures have long been object of study and technological applications. In this framework, strontium ferrite SrFeO3-x holds particular interest due to its capability to act as both an electronic and ionic conductor at high temperatures (becoming capable to conduct O2- ions through vacancies in its crystal structure) and thus employable both in fuel cells (as an electrode) and oxygen concentrating devices[1]. Moreover also the magnetic and catalytic properties of this compound are also to be considered.
In this work, the perovskite SrFeO3-x has been obtained through coprecipitation. Three synthetic paths have been explored: coprecipitation of hydroxides from an aqueous solution, coprecipitation of oxalates from an aqueous solution and polyol-assisted coprecipitation[2]. Products of all three synthetic paths were analyzed by means of powder XRD and XPS to determine the purity of the sample and to optimize the synthetic process itself. Pure samples were further characterized by means of ICP analysis, nitrogen adsorption, elemental analysis and Mössbauer spectroscopy. In particular, XRD and Mössbauer spectroscopy were used respectively to deduce the crystal structure of the obtained powders and to analyze the oxidation states and magnetic properties of the iron atoms contained in the sample, thus allowing to estimate the magnitude of the defects (as an oxygen vacancy would result in the presence of Fe(III) rather than Fe(IV))

Model study of the constituents of wall painting degradation patinas: The effect of the treatment with chelating agents on the solubility of the calcium salts
A model study on the application of chelating solutions on superficial calcium degradation patinas of wall paintings is presented. For this purpose the solubility of calcium sulfate, carbonate and oxalate in aqueous solutions of the Ca2 + chelators EDTA and citrate, was evaluated. Both the obtained solutions and their insoluble materials were analyzed by several analytical techniques. These studies revealed that the treatment of solid samples containing calcium sulfate and carbonate as the models of painting patinas resulted in higher solubilities of calcium sulfate and carbonate over that of oxalate. Moreover, our investigations confirmed the higher capacity of EDTA to chelate Ca2 + compared to that of citrate. All these results were interpreted and discussed on the basis of speciation models, solubility products of the salts and formation constants of the calcium complexes in solution. Finally, we report the characterization of a sodium calcium double citrate salt formed as an unexpected product in the treatment of the calcium sulfate with citrate. Overall our results suggest that the low solubility of calcium oxalate prevents its dissolution upon treatments with chelators, and that the capacity of citrate to dissolve the calcium salts is lower than that of EDTA irrespective of the duration of treatment
Study of alteration and degradation products of a Roman marble sarcophagus located in the medieval cloister of the old st Cosimato’s Convent, now the new "Regina Margherita Hospital” (Rome)
Optical and SEM-EDS microscopy, FT-IR and mFT-IR spectroscopy investigations have been applied to the study of alteration and degradation products of a Roman sarcophagus located in the medieval cloister of St Cosimato’s Convent, now the new “Regina Margherita Hospital” (Rome) before restoration work.
This scientific analysis was performed in order to compare it with a diagnosis report based on the restorer’s expertise. The sarcophagus is small and consists of a single block of fine-grained marble covered by a thick pink patina. The results obtained from this diagnostic investigation, allow us to draw important conclusions about the state of conservation of this archaeological artefact. The main components found in the samples analyzed are: black crust, calcium oxalate, organic matter due to recent conservation treatment, calcite, iron-oxides and coloured earths. In particular, the combined
used of petrographical and mFT-IR analysis provided useful insights into the polishing and consolidation processes of archaeological artefacts
