    On-Line Monitoring for Temporal Logic Robustness

    In this paper, we provide a Dynamic Programming algorithm for on-line monitoring of the state robustness of Metric Temporal Logic specifications with past time operators. We compute the robustness of MTL with unbounded past and bounded future temporal operators MTL over sampled traces of Cyber-Physical Systems. We implemented our tool in Matlab as a Simulink block that can be used in any Simulink model. We experimentally demonstrate that the overhead of the MTL robustness monitoring is acceptable for certain classes of practical specifications

    This paper presents application of self developed On-line monitoring system for main welding parameters acquisition and data processing at arc welding and resistant welding process. Recorded data by On-line monitoring system is compared with data measured by oscilloscope. Based on comparation of both methods, it is possible to conclude that there are no significant differences between recorded data. Presented On- line monitoring system is appropriate and accurate enough for welding parameters monitoring and control.U radu se predstavljaju primjene vlastitog razvijenog On-line monitoring sustava za prikupljanje i obradu glavnih parametara zavarivanja kod elektrolučnog i elektrootpornog zavarivanja. Snimljeni podaci pomoću On-line monitoring sustava su uspoređeni s podacima izmjerenim pomoću osciloskopa. Temeljem usporedbe obiju navedenih metoda, može se zaključiti da nema značajnih razlika između registriranih podataka.     On-line monitoring of water distribution networks

    This thesis is concerned with the development of a computer-based, real-time monitoring scheme which is a prerequisite of any form of on-line control. A new concept, in the field of water distribution systems, of water system state estimation is introduced. Its function is to process redundant, noise-corrupted telemeasurements in order to supply a real-time data base with reliable estimates of the current state and structure of the network. The information provided by the estimator can then be used in a number of on-line programs. In view of the strong nonlinearity of the network equations, two methods of state estimation, which have enhanced numerical stability, are examined in this thesis. The first method uses an augmented matrix formulation of a classical least-squares problem, and the second is based on a least absolute value solution of an over determined set of equations. Two water systems, one of which is a realistic 34-node network, are used to evaluate the performance of the proposed methods .The problem of bad data processing and its extension to the validation of network topology and leakage detection is also examined. It is shown that the method based on least absolute values estimation provides a more immediate indication of erroneous measurements. In addition, this method demonstrates the useful feature of eliminating the effects of gross errors on the final state estimate. The important question of water system observability is then studied. Two original combinatorial methods are proposed to check topological observability. The first one is an indirect technique which searches for a maximum measurement-to-branch matching and then attempts to build a spanning tree of the network graph using only the branches with measurement assignment. The second method is a direct search for an observable spanning tree. A number of systems are used to test both techniques, including a 34-node water supply network and an IEEE 118-bus power system. The problem of minimisation of distributed leakages is solved efficiently using a state estimation technique. Comparison of the head profile achieved for the calculated optimal valve controls with the standard operating conditions for a 25-node network indicates a major reduction of the volume of leakages. In the final part of this thesis a software package, which simulates the real-time operation of a water distribution system, is described. The programs are designed in such a way that by replacing simulated measurements with live telemetry data they can be directly used for. water network monitoring and control

    Chapter one summarises the development of UK legislation for the protection of the aquatic environment, and highlights current EC legislative requirements for water quality. The need for on-line water quality monitoring and the alternative instrumental approaches to it are discussed, together with the philosophy of "easy care instrumentation" and water industry requirements for online analysers. A simple spectrophotometric FI system is proposed for the on-line determination of a range of water quality parameters.The following chapter details instrumentation used in the FI system, emphasising the solid-state photometric detector.Development of an FI manifold for the determination of aluminium in potable and treated waters is covered in the next chapter. The method, based on complexation of aluminium with pyrocatechol violet is compared with a standard Driscoll procedure. Details of the construction and testing of a fully automated FI instrument are also given.Chapter four describes the development of a modular automated FI monitor with a PC compatible STEbus based computer system. Successful operation of this monitor is illustrated by its application to the determination of residual coagulants (aluminium and iron). Full details of software routines for control, processing and validation are given together with results from a tap water trial for dissolved aluminium.The FI determination of residual iron by its complexation with ferene S, and the application of the optimised method in the STEbus based monitor is detailed in chapter five.In the final chapter the use of on-line FI oxidation procedures for the determination of dissolved organic carbon are examined. The oxidation of a wide range of organic species to carbon dioxide using a silver catalysed persulphate reaction, enhanced with UV irradiation and a stopped-flow procedure is described. The sequential determination of inorganic and organic carbon without separation of the fractions is also investigated

    On-line monitoring of the transesterification reaction carried out in microreactors using near infrared spectroscopy

    Biodiesel can be produced from vegetable oils, animal fats, and waste cooking oils by transesterification with ethanol (also called ethanolysis) in order to substitute fossil fuels. In this work, the batch ethanolysis of high oleic sunflower oil was transferred into a continuous microstructured device, which induces a better control of heat and mass transfers. Various parameters were studied, notably the initial ethanol to oil molar ratio. An innovative method using NIR spectroscopy was also developed to on-line monitor the transesterification reaction of high oleic sunflower oil with ethanol in microreactors (circular PFA tube 1/1600 OD, 0.0200 ID). The reactions were monitored directly in the microreactors through sequential scans of the reaction medium by the means of an adequate probe. The asset of the method is that no sample collection or preparation is necessary. Partial Least Squares regression was used to develop calibration and prediction models between NIR spectral data and analytical data obtained by a reference method (gas chromatography with flame ionization detection, GC–FID). This method is fast, safe, reliable, nondestructive and inexpensive contrary to conventional procedures, such as gas chromatography and high performance liquid chromatography generally used to determine the composition of crude transesterification medium

    On an application of extended kalman filtering to activated sludge processes: a benchmark study

    The growing demand for performance improvements of urban wastewater system operation coupled with the lack of instrumentation in most wastewater treatment plants motivates the need for non-linear observers to be used as virtual sensors for estimation and control of effluent quality. This paper is focused on the development of a general procedure for on-line monitoring of activated sludge processes, using an extended Kalman filter (EKF) approach. The Activated Sludge Model no.1 (ASM1) is selected to describe the biological processes in the reactor. On-line measurements are corrupted by additive white noise and unknown inputs are modelled using fast Fourier transform (FFT) and spectrum analyses. The given procedure aims at reducing the original ASM1 model to an observable and identifiable model, which can be used for joint non-linear state and parameter estimations. Simulation results are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methods and show that on-line monitoring of SND and XND concentrations is achieved when dynamic input data are used tocharacterize the influent wastewater for the model

    On-line monitoring of VoIP quality using IPFIX

    The main goal of VoIP services is to provide a reliable and high-quality voice transmission over packet networks. In order to prove the quality of VoIP transmission, several approaches were designed. In our approach, we are concerned about on-line monitoring of RTP and RTCP traffic. Based on these data, we are able to compute main VoIP quality metrics including jitter, delay, packet loss, and finally R-factor and MOS values. This technique of VoIP quality measuring can be directly incorporated into IPFIX monitoring framework where an IPFIX probe analyses RTP/RTCP packets, computes VoIP quality metrics, and adds these metrics into extended IPFIX flow records. Then, these extended data are stored in a central IPFIX monitoring system called collector where can be used for monitoring purposes. This paper presents a functional implementation of IPFIX plugin for VoIP quality measurement and compares the results with results obtained by other tools
