Optomotor Swimming in Larval Zebrafish Is Driven by Global Whole-Field Visual Motion and Local Light-Dark Transitions
Stabilizing gaze and position within an environment constitutes an important task for the nervous system of many animals. The optomotor response (OMR) is a reflexive behavior, present across many species, in which animals move in the direction of perceived whole-field visual motion, therefore stabilizing themselves with respect to the visual environment. Although the OMR has been extensively used to probe visuomotor neuronal circuitry, the exact visual cues that elicit the behavior remain unidentified. In this study, we use larval zebrafish to identify spatio-temporal visual features that robustly elicit forward OMR swimming. These cues consist of a local, forward-moving, off edge together with on/off symmetric, similarly directed, global motion. Imaging experiments reveal neural units specifically activated by the forward-moving light-dark transition. We conclude that the OMR is driven not just by whole-field motion but by the interplay between global and local visual stimuli, where the latter exhibits a strong light-dark asymmetry
Optical Music Recognition with Convolutional Sequence-to-Sequence Models
Optical Music Recognition (OMR) is an important technology within Music
Information Retrieval. Deep learning models show promising results on OMR
tasks, but symbol-level annotated data sets of sufficient size to train such
models are not available and difficult to develop. We present a deep learning
architecture called a Convolutional Sequence-to-Sequence model to both move
towards an end-to-end trainable OMR pipeline, and apply a learning process that
trains on full sentences of sheet music instead of individually labeled
symbols. The model is trained and evaluated on a human generated data set, with
various image augmentations based on real-world scenarios. This data set is the
first publicly available set in OMR research with sufficient size to train and
evaluate deep learning models. With the introduced augmentations a pitch
recognition accuracy of 81% and a duration accuracy of 94% is achieved,
resulting in a note level accuracy of 80%. Finally, the model is compared to
commercially available methods, showing a large improvements over these

Signaling Strength And The Announced Size Of An Open-Market Repurchase
An open question exists as to whether the announced size of an open-market repurchase (OMR) possesses positive signaling effects. Relying on short sales that occur during the five trading days that follow an OMR announcement as an indication of the signaling effect of the size of the OMR program, I find that post-announcement short sales tend to decrease with positive returns surrounding OMR announcements but that post-announcement short sales do not decrease with the announced size of an OMR program. Therefore, I conclude that while announcements of OMR programs serve as positive signals, in general, the announcement of a larger OMR program does not possess a stronger positive signal.
The magnetoresistance of homogeneous and heterogeneous silver-rich silver selenide
The magnetoresistance (MR) effect of the low-temperature phase of silver selenide (-Ag2 + Se) is measured as a function of composition. Very small composition variations in the order of = 10–6 are achieved by coulometric titration and can be performed simultaneously during the MR measurement. A homogeneous Ag2 + Se shows an ordinary magnetoresistance (OMR) effect, which can be well described by the two-band model. For silver selenide with a heterogenous silver excess, we found quite a different MR behavior. Up to a minor silver excess of 1×10–4 10–2) shows again an OMR effect
Exploration of Health Technology Nonuse: The Case of Online Medical Records
Online Medical Records (OMR) platforms remain a key enabler to health management. Yet, how beliefs toward OMR and its subsequent nonuse are related is not understood. Applying the status quo bias (SQB) theory and the privacy paradox paradigm the study examines OMR nonusers and contributes to the health technology use literature. Using the Health Information National Trends Survey (HINTS) iteration 5, Cycle 1 and 3 data, mediation analysis reveals that inertia expressed as preference for speaking directly with healthcare providers predicts perceived need for OMR and partially mediates the relationship between perceived privacy concerns and need; having a chronic disease partially moderates such relationships. Thus, not all nonusers are created equal. Attaining benefits that come with capabilities and functionalities of OMR necessitates meaningful use of OMR by individuals. Healthcare providers or policymakers should intervene to dispel inertia or patient concerns to expand OMR use to facilitate healthcare decision making
Magnetotransport in the Normal State of La1.85Sr0.15Cu(1-y)Zn(y)O4 Films
We have studied the magnetotransport properties in the normal state for a
series of La1.85Sr0.15Cu(1-y)Zn(y)O4 films with values of y, between 0 and
0.12. A variable degree of compressive or tensile strain results from the
lattice mismatch between the substrate and the film, and affects the transport
properties differently from the influence of the zinc impurities. In
particular, the orbital magnetoresistance (OMR) varies with y but is
strain-independent. The relations for the resistivity and the Hall angle and
the proportionality between the OMR and tan^2 theta are followed about 70 K. We
have been able to separate the strain and impurity effects by rewriting the
above relations, where each term is strain-independent and depends on y only.
We also find that changes in the lattice constants give rise to closely the
same fractional changes in other terms of the equation.The OMR is more strongly
supressed by the addition of impurities than tan^2 theta. We conclude that the
relaxation ratethat governs Hall effect is not the same as for the
magnetoresistance. We also suggest a correspondence between the transport
properties and the opening of the pseudogap at a temperature which changes when
the La-sr ratio changes, but does not change with the addition of the zinc
impurities
Open-Market Repurchases, Firm Quality, And Discouraging Short Sellers
Announcing an open-market repurchase (OMR) is presented as a potential tool for managers to discourage short selling in their firm’s stock. Empirical testing determines the relation that abnormal short selling that follows an OMR announcement has with abnormal returns during the announcement period and announcing firm quality. Results show that post-announcement abnormal short sales decrease with positive abnormal returns during the OMR announcement period but that announcing firm quality is unrelated to the level of post-announcement abnormal short sales. Therefore, announcing an OMR may be an effective tool to discourage short sales in a firm’s stock independent of firm quality because abnormal returns around an OMR announcement tend to be positive and short sellers do not appear to distinguish among announcing firms based on firm quality.
