    Nonverbal communication in schizophrenia: A 3-D Analysis of patients’ social interactions

    PhDBackground: Schizophrenia is a severe mental illness affecting approximately 0.4% of the population. A core feature of schizophrenia is social dysfunction, however, the precise nature of patients’ social deficits remain unknown. During face-to-face interaction we use nonverbal cues to coordinate, regulate and manage conversation. Patients have difficulty perceiving nonverbal cues in social cognitive tests, but it is unclear if this difficulty persists in their social encounters. The aim of this thesis is to determine if patients’ social deficits are manifest in the nonverbal behaviour of their social interactions, specifically investigating; (1) interpersonal coordination between the head movements of interacting partners and (2) the head and hand movements of patients and their partners in the context of conversation role. The relationship between nonverbal behaviour and patients’ symptoms, social cognition, rapport and social outcomes will also be assessed. Methods: The experimental study involved twenty patient (1 patient, 2 healthy participants) and twenty control (3 healthy participants) three-way groups. Groups were motion captured while discussing a moral dilemma. Healthy participants were unaware a patient was present. Results: (1) interpersonal coordination was reduced in patients’ three-way interactions (2) patients displayed less head and hand movement, while their healthy participant partners displayed more. Increased patients’ negative symptoms intensified this pattern and were associated with reduced patient rapport. Patients spending more time actively involved in their three-way interactions had poorer social outcomes. Patients’ performance on social cognitive assessments showed no association with their nonverbal behaviour. Interpretation: Patients’ three-way interactions display atypical patterns of nonverbal behaviour. The presence of a patient changes the behaviour of the healthy participants they are interacting with; even when they are unaware a patient is present. Patients’ symptoms mediate the behaviour of patients and their partners, and influence patients’ rapport

    Until recently, the area of human-computer interaction was based on a traditional, cognitive approach, which separated the study of usability from that of emotions. The recent research has shown that emotions play an important role in our life, which led to focusing on the need of studying the emotions in the domain of interactive design. This paper underlines the role of emotions as part of the interactive human-computer process, reinstating the importance of nonverbal communication in this domain.     Cross cultural detection of depression from nonverbal behaviour

    Millions of people worldwide suffer from depression. Do commonalities exist in their nonverbal behavior that would enable cross-culturally viable screening and assessment of severity? We investigated the generalisability of an approach to detect depression severity cross-culturally using video-recorded clinical interviews from Australia, the USA and Germany. The material varied in type of interview, subtypes of depression and inclusion healthy control subjects, cultural background, and recording environment. The analysis focussed on temporal features of participants' eye gaze and head pose. Several approaches to training and testing within and between datasets were evaluated. The strongest results were found for training across all datasets and testing across datasets using leave-one-subject-out cross-validation. In contrast, generalisability was attenuated when training on only one or two of the three datasets and testing on subjects from the dataset(s) not used in training.     A Sequence Analysis of Nonverbal Behaviour and Deception

    The ability to correctly interpret nonverbal communication (NVC) is an important ability in everyday interactions, which may use NVC techniques to identify the concealment of information. In the present study, a novel approach was used to understand NVC. Behavior sequence analysis identified specific sequences of behaviors that indicate psychological distress caused by deception. The study involved the analysis of 55 videos of real criminals and high-power individuals that were filmed fabricating statements, which were later exposed as being untruthful at the time of being filmed. In addition, 53 clips of criminals making truthful statements were also analysed as a contrast group. Results indicated clear differences between honest and deceptive responses, such as furrowing of eyebrows in the deceptive sequences occurring more often than honest statements. In addition, sequences of behaviors were shown in the present data set, which could indicate a new method for analysing NVC and detecting psychological distress caused by deception. The possible implications and applications for police and forensic investigation are also outlined

    The correlation between polygraph results and nonverbal behaviour

    The long history, serious and multiple negative consequences, and the global prevalence of human deception inspired the current correlational study. According to certain researchers and practitioners, the polygraph has emerged as one of the most promising methods to detect deception. Although its use has not been without controversy, it is still one of the most frequent means used to detect human deception. In an attempt to address the continued reliance on the polygraph, often in the absence of other evidence, the current study aimed to explore and describe the relationship between final polygraph test results and nonverbal behaviour observations during the pre-interview of the polygraph test. The research design was a correlational study, which explored and described the relationship between specified nonverbal behavioural observations, and deceptive and non-deceptive indicator results, of the participants taking the polygraph test. The nonverbal movements of the head, shoulders, hands and feet were the focus of the study. The research hypothesis of the study was that participants who were identified as deceptive on the polygraph would demonstrate significant statistical differences in specific nonverbal behaviours compared to non-deceptive participants. The results indicated significant statistical difference between the hand movements between the deceptive and the non-deceptive groups who participated in the study. The nonverbal behaviour related to the two groups’ hand movements was found to show significant differences, specifically related to five specific domains, hand hold symmetrical action, right arm/hand still, left hand/finger actions, touch behaviour, and thumbs up and downwards movements. The data were described and analysed by means of descriptive and inferential statistics and significant correlational findings were discussed in relation to the relevant published literature

    A Psychometric Investigation into the Structure of Deception Strategy Use

    This paper uses a data-driven approach to identify the psychological factors that underlie the array of strategies that people use to hide their deceit. Two hundred and nine participants told two lies and two truths and then completed a self-report scale that elicited their experiences when deceiving. A factor analysis of responses produced four factors, three of which were strategic in nature: Nonverbal behaviour control, which relates to attempts to monitor and control nonverbal behaviour when lying; Detail, which relates to attempts to produce detailed, engaging lies; Cognitive difficulty, which relates to the cognitive difficulties experienced when lying and their strategic consequences; and Anxiety, which relates to the negative emotions experienced when deceiving. The results further our understanding of the psychological processes that underpin deception and suggest several potentially fruitful avenues for future research
