    Research and Pedagogy in Intercultural New Media Studies

    New media are ubiquitous, changing the landscape of intercultural communication. Intercultural new media studies (INMS), first introduced and conceptualized by Robert Shuter in 2012 in his article in the Journal of Intercultural Communication Research, is an exciting new field of study which explores intercultural and international communication in a digital age. It promises to contemporize existing intercultural communication theories by exploring their relevance and salience in a mediated world. INMS also offers the prospect of developing 21st century theories of intercultural communication that include new media platforms. Finally, by exploring the relationship between culture and new media, intercultural new media studies details how culture affects the social uses of new media, and how new media affects culture. This article, and the nine studies in this special issue, are an important step in further developing intercultural new media studies and realizing its’ promise.     Intercultural New Media Studies: The Next Frontier in intercultural Communication

    New media (ICT\u27s) are transforming communication across cultures. Despite this revolution in cross cultural contact, communication researchers have largely ignored the impact of new media on intercultural communication. This groundbreaking article defines the parameters of a new field of inquiry called Intercultural New Media Studies (INMS), which explores the intersection between ICT\u27s and intercultural communication. Composed of two research areas—(1) new media and intercultural communication theory and (2) culture and new media—INMS investigates new digital theories of intercultural contact as well as refines and expands twentieth-century intercultural communication theories, examining their salience in a digital world. INMS promises to increase our understanding of intercultural communication in a new media age and is the next frontier in intercultural communication

    Deconstruction and the Archival Revolution: on the Relevance and Reception of Archive Fever in New Media Studies

    The paper focuses on the reception of Derrida’s Archive Fever among (new) media theorists and its relevance for the ongoing discussions in that academic field. Although this Derrida’s text is often described as the one in which he provides a statement on the pervasive revolutionary impact of new media, its reception among media theorists remains scarce. Several media scholars that tackle the text, however, have an ambivalent stance on it: they appreciate some of Derrida’s theses, but regard them largely obsolete. The first part of the paper analyzes these critiques and argues that many of the objections on Derrida’s behalf are caused by the misinterpretation of important features of the deconstructive thought. In its second part, the paper firstly deals with certain weaker points of Derrida’s reflection and then proceeds to examine his insights pertinent to the problems of contemporary media theory that were neglected in earlier reception. Finally, paper reaffirms the claim about the need for a more profound exchange between the deconstruction and media studies, albeit one that would avoid the examined shortcomings

    The Sunglasses of Ideology: Augmented Reality as Posthuman Cognitive Prosthesis

    This project argues a methodological approach for examining augmented reality (AR) that blends new media studies with that of the digital humanities to develop a hybrid methodology that accounts for AR as a digital medium and, in turn, a critical framework for digital humanities (DH) cultural criticism. As Steven Jones argues in The Emergence of the Digital Humanities, the digital has always been physical, and the network has become the water in which we swim (20). Our networked tech has begun to reflect this by showing closer interaction between physical and digital artifacts, the most notable example being AR, where digital information responds directly to physical space. This project takes a multidisciplinary approach to explore the rhetorical and ideological implications of AR as both a technology and a medium. By exploring AR as it relates to current digital humanities scholarship, comparative new media studies, and critical theory, as well as a hands-on approach that involved the development of an AR smartphone application, this project aims to show that augmented reality is uniquely useful as a vessel for future research into digital materiality, while eventually arguing that this tech literalizes imaginative and cognitive processes, ultimately revealing a posthuman ontology where thinking and technology are indistinguishable from one another
