A novel method for the analysis and interpretation of data that describes the interaction between trainee network managers and a network management training tool is presented. A simulation based approach is currently being used to train network managers, through the use of a simulated network. The motivation is to provide a tool for exposing trainees to a life like situation without disrupting a live network. The data logged by this system describes the detailed interaction between trainee network manager and simulated network. The work presented here provides an analysis of this interaction data that enables an assessment of the capabilities of the trainee network manager as well as an understanding of how the network management tasks are being approached. A neural network architecture is implemented in order to perform an exploratory data analysis of the interaction data. The neural network employs a novel form of continuous self-organisation to discover key features in the data and thus provide new insights into the learning and teaching strategies employed

Treball realitzat a la KTH The Royal Institute of Technology[ANGLÈS] WirelessHART standard is becoming a reference as a wireless solution in industrial process automation and control. The WirelessHART network performance is mainly determined by its main component: the Network Manager, responsible for creating and configuring the WHART network, as well as managing routing and scheduling communications between devices. Due to the novelty of the WirelessHART standard (2010), there is not an opensource design or implementation of the WirelessHART Network Manager available. Only Dust Networks has a commercial Network Manager in the market. This fact makes the WirelessHART Network Manager an interesting area of research. In this thesis, we present a layered interface-oriented component-based architecture and the software design for the WirelessHART Network Manager. Furthermore, we give solution to some of the question marks left by the WHART specification regarding the Network Manager operation. Due to the modularity of the proposed design and architecture, the software components can be reused in other WirelessHART devices such Gateway or Field Devices.[CASTELLÀ] WirelessHART se considera el primer estándar de comuniaciones inalámbricas específicamente diseñado para procesos de automatización y control en la industria.

Seamless Wireless Connection Switching on a Mobile Device

This publication describes techniques and methods to provide a seamless switch from one wireless network to another wireless network on a mobile device. The described techniques and methods include an on-device application capable of switching wireless networks (network manager) that leverages a hardware capability present in wireless chipsets allowing for a seamless switch from one wireless network to another. The hardware capability includes a chipset handling two concurrent wireless connections (e.g., a first (default) network connection and a second network connection) on different networks. If the quality of the first network connection deteriorates, the device can evaluate and connect to a second network. If the network manager decides the second network is a better connection, it will make the second network the new default network. The first network can stay connected until all ongoing transfers utilizing the first network have been completed. This switch will not use the cellular network during the transition and will decrease disruption for the user
