    The boat propellers are needed for fishing boats in Aceh Province, considering that most Acehnese people geographically live along the coastline. Their income apart from farmers is fishermen. Currently, the metal ship propellers are imported from outside Aceh Province, so metal casting technology is needed to produce these ship propellers. There is already a small-scale industrial for metal casting, and the location is in Baet Lampuot - Aceh Besar District. The metal casting industry is currently producing rencong souvenirs to support tourism. However, when the Covid-19 Pandemic hit Aceh in particular and Indonesia in general, there are needed an alternative metal production business with other types of product variants, one of which was a ship cast-propeller. Based on this, Mechanical Engineering and FKIP Physics Department of Universitas Syiah Kuala improve the rencong metal casting industry to develop its products, to produce ship propellers through the Higher Education Leading Community Empowerment Program (PPMUPT) funded by the Ministry of Research and Technology /National Research and Innovation Agency of the Republic of Indonesia (RISTEK/ BRIN). The ship propeller product developed from waste metal, it recycled through metal casting technology. So the program and technology developed, is very useful not only for growing the regional economy but also in terms of handling the environment by recycling waste metal. Therefore, the community service program carried out by Mechanical Engineering and FKIP Physics Department of Universitas Syiah Kuala is right on target and in line with expectations

    RELEVANSI STANDAR KOMPETENSI TEKNIK PENGECORAN LOGAM DALAM MATA PELAJARAN PRODUKTIF DI SMK DENGAN STANDAR KOMPETENSI DI INDUSTRI PENGECORAN LOGAM DI KABUPATEN KLATEN

    Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui tingkat relevansi standar kompetensi dibidang pengecoran logam aluminium dan besi cor dalam mata pelajaran produktif di SMK dengan standar kompetensi yang dibutuhkan di industri pengecoran logam saat ini. Jenis penelitian yang digunakan adalah penelitian deskriptif dengan metode penelitian survey. Waktu pelaksanaa penelitian dimulai bulan Oktober 2010 hingga Maret 2011 (6 bulan), yang dilaksanakan di SMK N 2 Klaten, SMK Batur Jaya 1 Klaten, CV Bonjor Jaya, CV Teknika Jaya dan Koperasi Batur Jaya Klaten. Obyek penelitian ini berupa standar kompetensi pengecoran logam yang diajarkan maupun yang dibutuhkan di masing-masing lokasi penelitian. Tahapan penelitian yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini meliputi tahap persiapan, observasi, tahap perijinan, tahap pengumpulan data, tahap analisis data, dan terakhir tahap pembuatan laporan. Metode yang digunakan untuk pengumpulan data adalah dengan menggunakan angket, dokumentasi dan wawancara tidak terstruktur , sedangkan analisa data menggunakan teknik analisis deskriptif kuantitatif persentase yang diterjemahkan dalam distribusi skor dan hasil akhir akan dikonversi sesuai kriteria penilaian yang telah ditentukan. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian, dapat disimpulkan bahwa: (1) kompetensi pengecoran logam di Sekolah Menengah Kejuruan yang bersumber dari kurikulum SMK teknik pengecoran logam sudah diajarkan kepada siswa sebesar 84% untuk aspek hard skill dan 71% untuk aspek soft skill nya, (2) kompetensi pengecoran logam yang dibutuhkan industri sudah masuk dalam kurikulum untuk SMK teknik pengecoran logam sebesar 74 % untuk aspek hard skill dan 64 % untuk aspek soft skill, (3) kompetensi di SMK dalam aspek hard skill secara realistis memiliki tingkat relevansi sebesar 50 % untuk kriteria sangat relevan dan 50 % untuk kriteria relevan, serta untuk aspek soft skill memiliki tingkat relevansi sebesar 79 % untuk kriteria sangat relevan dan 21 % untuk kriteria relevan dengan kompetensi yang dibutuhkan industri di bidang pengecoran logam

    The application of life cycle assessment to metal casting

    The thesis presents a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) study that compares the potential environmental impacts associated with two alternative material groups. The comparison involves aluminium alloy and cast iron automotive casting components. The comparative LCA study aims to identify which system of materials, aluminium or cast iron, reduces the total burdens on the environment most throughout the entire lifecycle of a metal casting automotive application. A specialised LCA software tool (Boustead Model 4.4) has been used to compare and contrast the potential environmental impacts of the two alternative cast metal alloys and, conclusively, identify the best environmental proposition for the specific metal casting application.     Performance of Optimization Algorithms in the Model Fitting of the Multi-Scale Numerical Simulation of Ductile Iron Solidification

    The use of optimization algorithms to adjust the numerical models with experimental values has been applied in other fields, but the efforts done in metal casting sector are much more limited. The advances in this area may contribute to get metal casting adjusted models in less time improving the confidence in their predictions and contributing to reduce tests at laboratory scale. This work compares the performance of four algorithms (compass search, NEWUOA, genetic algorithm (GA) and particle swarm optimization (PSO)) in the adjustment of the metal casting simulation models. The case study used in the comparison is the multiscale simulation of the hypereutectic ductile iron (SGI) casting solidification. The model fitting criteria is the value of the tensile strength. Four different situations have been studied: model fitting based in 2, 3, 6 and 10 variables. Compass search and PSO have succeeded in reaching the error target in the four cases studied, while NEWUOA and GA have failed in some cases.     Prediction and validation of shape distortions in the simulation of high pressure die casting

    The use of the thermomechanical simulation is very infrequent in the metal casting industry although the associated results are really useful for the manufacturing process. The main reasons are the complexity, the long calculation times and the difficulties to interpret the results. The parts manufactured by metal casting processes cool from its filling temperature to ambient, which causes a certain stress-strain state. Although the stress levels might be significant, the main worry of the foundrymen is usually the shape distortion. That is, the mismatches between the desired dimensions and the real ones. The problem is that the results obtained from numerical simulation are not directly useful to cover this industrial necessity. This work presents the prediction obtained using the thermomechanical simulation for the final dimensions of a component manufactured in aluminium alloy by high pressure die casting (HPDC) and its validation with the final dimensions of the manufactured component. The methodology established to forecast the mismatches with the reference geometry is also detailed, as it may be useful to encourage the use of this type of simulation in the metal casting industry.This work was supported by the Basque Government (Department of Industry and Innovation).     Benefits of industry 4.0 in foundry engineering’s greensand moulding process

    Abstract: There is a need to introduce modern technologies to address inefficiencies in foundry engineering. The foundry industry is very old dating back as far as 1479. The early foundry engineers produced metal castings which were mainly cannons and bells. Foundries have been slow to adapt to disruptive technologies. However with the 4th industrial revolution foundries cannot afford to miss out. Foundry Engineering which is metal casting is under a lot of pressure from other competing manufacturing technologies. Forging, fabrications and 3D metal printing, plastic and composite materials are competitors to metal casting. The most common and cheapest way of producing castings is in greensand. This is due to the fact that it uses low cost raw materials. Though the process is cheaper than other casting processes. There is always a need for improving efficiencies in the means of production to compete with other manufacturing technologies. The 4th industrial revolution has become a pillar of improving competiveness in the metal casting process. This paper evaluates how the first cloud based green sand data analytic software Sandman plays a role in contributing towards the achievement of the sustainable development goals in African foundries. The greensand data analytic programme has been seen to be a key resource in driving for responsible consumption and production.     Kajian yang dijalankan ini adalah untuk melihat kebolehgunaan sebuah perisian pendidikan yang menerapkan Kaedah Pembelajaran Lukisan Kejuruteraan Berasaskan Simulasi bagi menyelesaikan masalah kurang faham , kurang minat dan kebergantungan yang terlalu memusat kepada guru di kalangan pelajar Tingkatan 4, Sekolah Menengah Ungku Aziz, Sabak Bernam, Selangor . Justeru, penyampaian isi kandungan yang bersesuaian dengan tahap pemikiran atau kognitif pelajar, aspek minat dan motivasi serta pembelajaran ala akses kendiri dirasakan sebagai faktor utama yang ingin dikenal pasti dalam perisian yang dibangunkan bagi menyelesaikan masalah tersebut. Macromedia Authorware versi 6.5 dipilih sebagai bahasa pengarangan bagi membangunkan perisian pendidikan ini. Seramai 30 responden dipilih untuk mendapatkan maklum balas terhadap kajian ini. Data yang didapati telah dianalisis menggunakan perisian Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) versi 11.0 menggunakan kaedah deskriptif min. Hasil kajian mendapati bahawa maklum balas adalah positif terhadap faktor-faktor yang telah dikaji
