    Study of Intelligent Control Techniques Applied to a Stirring Tank with Heat Exchanger

    This work presents a study and evaluation of intelligent control techniques applied to the problem of temperature control of a stirring tank with heat exchanger. This problem is represented by the example provided and documented by MathWorks in MATLAB/Simulink software, called Heatex. The intelligent techniques used are Fuzzy Logic Controller (FLC), Fuzzy Cognitive Maps (FCM), Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) and the combination of these. The proportional-integral (PI) controller provided in the Heatex example is considered as a reference basis during the evaluation of the intelligent control techniques in different test scenarios. The metrics Integral of Absolute Error (IAE) and Integral Time-weighted Absolute Error (ITAE), as well as the parameters overshoot percentage and settling time are the criteria used to evaluate the control techniques performance

    We report a pilot study on in situ analysis of backscatter data for intelligent control of a scientific instrument on an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) carried out at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI). The objective of the study is to investigate techniques which use machine intelligence to enable event-response scenarios. Specifically we analyse a set of techniques for automated sample acquisition in the water-column using an electro-mechanical "Gulper", designed at MBARI. This is a syringe-like sampling device, carried onboard an AUV. The techniques we use in this study are clustering algorithms, intended to identify the important distinguishing characteristics of bodies of points within a data sample. We demonstrate that the complementary features of two clustering approaches can offer robust identification of interesting features in the water-column, which, in turn, can support automatic event-response control in the use of the Gulper

    Implementation of an intelligent control system

    A laboratory testbed facility which was constructed at NASA LeRC for the development of an Intelligent Control System (ICS) for reusable rocket engines is described. The framework of the ICS consists of a hierarchy of various control and diagnostic functions. The traditional high speed, closed-loop controller resides at the lowest level of the ICS hierarchy. Above this level resides the diagnostic functions which identify engine faults. The ICS top level consists of the coordination function which manages the interaction between an expert system and a traditional control system. The purpose of the testbed is to demonstrate the feasibility of the OCS concept by implementing the ICS as the primary controller in a simulation of the Space Shuttle Main Engine (SSME). The functions of the ICS which are implemented in the testbed are as follows: an SSME dynamic simulation with selected fault mode models, a reconfigurable controller, a neural network for sensor validation, a model-based failure detection algorithm, a rule based failure detection algorithm, a diagnostic expert system, an intelligent coordinator, and a user interface which provides a graphical representation of the event occurring within the testbed. The diverse nature of the ICS has led to the development of a distributed architecture consisting of specialized hardware and software for the implementation of the various functions. This testbed is made up of five different computer systems. These individual computers are discussed along with the schemes used to implement the various ICS components. The communication between computers and the timing and synchronization between components are also addressed

    One of the future flagship missions of the European Space Agency (ESA) is the asteroid sample return mission Marco-Polo. Although there have been a number of past missions to asteroids, a sample has never been successfully returned. The return of asteroid regolith to the Earth's surface introduces new technical challenges. This paper develops attitude control algorithms for the descent phase onto an asteroid in micro-gravity conditions and draws a comparison between the algorithms considered. Two studies are also performed regarding the Fault Detection Isolation and Recovery (FDIR) of the control laws considered. The potential of using Direct Adaptive Control (DAC) as a controller for the surface sampling process is also investigated. Use of a DAC controller incorporates increased levels of robustness by allowing realtime variation of control gains. This leads to better response to uncertainties encountered during missions

    Automatic control refers to the use of a control device to make the controlled object automatically run or keep the state unchanged without the participation of people. The guiding ideology of intelligent control is based on peopleā€™s way of thinking and ability to solve problems, in order to solve the current methods that require human intelligence. We already know that the complexity of the controlled object includes model uncertainty, high nonlinearity, distributed sensors/actuators, dynamic mutations, multiple time scales, complex information patterns, big data process, and strict characteristic indicators, etc. In addition, the complexity of the environment manifests itself in uncertainty and uncertainty of change. Based on this, various researches continue to suggest that the main methods of intelligent control can include expert control, fuzzy control, neural network control, hierarchical intelligent control, anthropomorphic intelligent control, integrated intelligent control, combined intelligent control, chaos control, wavelet theory, etc. However, it is difficult to want all the intelligent control methods in a chapter, so this chapter focuses on intelligent control based on fuzzy logic, intelligent control based on neural network, expert control and human-like intelligent control, and hierarchical intelligent control and learning control, and provide relevant and useful programming for readers to practice

    Active and intelligent control onto thermal behaviors of a motorized spindle unit

    Motorized spindle unit is the core component of a precision CNC machine tool. Its thermal errors perform generally serious disturbance onto the accuracy and accuracy stability of precision machining. Traditionally, the effectiveness of the compensation method for spindle thermal errors is restricted by machine freedom degrees. For this problem, this paper presents an active, differentiated, and intelligent control method onto spindle thermal behaviors, to realize comprehensive and accurate suppressions onto spindle thermal errors. Firstly, the mechanism of spindle heat generation/dissipation-structural temperature-thermal deformation error is analyzed. This modeling conveys that the constantly least spindle thermal errors can be realized by differentiated and active controls onto its structural thermal behaviors. Based on this principle, besides, the active control method is developed by a combination of extreme learning machine (ELM) and genetic algorithm (GA). The aim is to realize the general applicability of this active and intelligent control algorithm, for the spindle time-varying thermal behaviors. Consequently, the contrasting experiments clarify that the proposed active and intelligent control method can suppress accurately and synchronously all kinds of spindle thermal errors. It is significantly beneficial for the improvements of the accuracy and accuracy stability of motorized spindle units
