    When Pliny the Elder wrote Naturalis Historia around 70 A.D., the idea of natural history contained and connected biology, geology, and mineralogy with the history of painting and sculpture. Art was an extension of the natural world as its materials were extracted from plants, animals, and, particularly, mined and quarried pigments, stone, and metals. In my developing body of work, Incidents of Naturalis Historia, Reconstructed, I combine waspsÔÇÖ nests, architectural fragments, and other found objects excavated from my surrounding environment with elements of glass that resemble lichen, crystallization, and geologic specimens. These works simulate artifacts of an alternative history; one in which the divergent histories of art, craft, biology, and geology are again united

    En este trabajo se ofrece una panor├ím├şca general del proceso de privatizaci├│n de la superficie y de los aprovechamientos de los montes p├║blicos espa├▒oles durante la segunda mitad del siglo XIX y el primer tercio del XX. Partiendo de las estad├şsticas disponibles, que se critican y modifican en algunos aspectos, se definen las principales caracter├şsticas de dicho proceso para el conjunto de Espa├▒a y se resalta su diversidad, estudiando varios casos regionales. Posteriormente, se plantea la hip├│tesis de que la reforma liberal, a este respecto, no persigui├│ s├│lo la instauraci├│n de la "propiedad perfecta", sino tambi├ęn asegurar nuevas formas de acumulaci├│n que se adaptasen a las distintas condiciones ecol├│gicas, econ├│micas y sociales de cada lugar.This work presents a general view of land privatization and of the use of Spanish public forest during the second half of the XIXth century and the first third of the XXth century. Main characteristics of that process are defined for the whole Spain starting from available statistics, which are criticized and modified in some ways. The diversity of that process is also set off, trough the study of several regional cases. Afterwards, a hypothesis is posed, and it is that the liberal reform aimed not only the establishment of the ÔÇťperfect propertyÔÇŁ, but also to guarantee new ways of accumulation in order to be adapted to a different ecological, economic and social conditions in every place

    Pol├ştica forestal y producci├│n de los montes p├║blicos espa├▒oles. Una visi├│n de conjunto, 1861-1933

    Editada en la Fundaci├│n Empresa P├║blicaUna de las consecuencias de las transformaciones de la propiedad de la tierra en Espa├▒a, durante el siglo XIX, fue la constituci├│n de un extenso patrimonio forestal p├║blico (6,6 millones de hect├íreas), que pas├│ a depender de la administraci├│n central y que se conserva hoy casi en su totalidad. En este art├şculo se ofrece una visi├│n de conjunto de las producciones y de la gesti├│n de los montes p├║blicos. La intervenci├│n del Estado se ha dividido en cuatro etapas y, considerando los resultados m├ís que los objetivos iniciales, destacan dos conclusiones. Primera: por sus caracter├şsticas, los montes p├║blicos no eran adecuados para que los gobiernos los utilizaran con el fin de dirigir el rumbo de la econom├şa forestal nacional. Segunda: la administraci├│n central aplic├│, no una, sino varias pol├şticas forestales, atendiendo a los cambios en los mercados y a las diferentes circunstancias econ├│micas, sociales y ecol├│gicas de las comarcas donde se encontraban los montes.One of the consequences of transformations in Spanish land properties in the 19th century was the constitution of an extensive (6.6 million hectares) public forest patrimony ÔÇöstill keptÔÇö dependent on the Central Administration. In this article, an overview of the main features, as well as the management and production forms of such a patrimony, is presented. State intervention is divided into four stages and, considering their results rather than their initial goals, two main conclusions are reached. First, given their characteristics, public forests were not adequate for the government to be able to lead this part of the forest national economy. Second, the central administration applied not one but several public forest policies, according to changes in the markets and to the economic situation, and social and ecological conditions where forests were found.Publicad

    La pol├ştica forestal puesta en marcha en la Espa├▒a de 1859 a 1926 fue muy ambiciosa. Procur├│ la privatizaci├│n de buena parte de los espacios que habian sido p├║blicos y cre├│, a la vez, un nuevo patrimonio forestal p├║blico, cuya gesti├│n contempl├│ una creciente privatizaci├│n de sus aprovechamientos. Por ello, su aplicaci├│n en territorios natural, econ├│mica y socialmente distintos, dio lugar a resultados muy diferentes, provoc├│ rechazo, gener├│ conflictos y oblig├│ a que la represi├│n fuese su acompa├▒ante indispensable. Una represi├│n cuya orientaci├│n no fue azarosa, Sino complementaria del proceso de privatizaci├│n de la propiedad y del acceso a los frutos de los montes p├║blicos. En este articulo, a fin de demostrarlo, hemos abordado conjuntamente lo que nos parecen exponentes id├│neos de ambos fen├│menos. Hemos optado, de un lado, por mostrar el citado proceso de privatizaci├│n en sus dimensiones espacial y temporal, asi como por establecer las pautas de la especializaci├│n productiva del monte que sigui├│ siendo p├║blico, determinantes de los estimulas a la privatizaci├│n de sus esquilmos y relevantes, a nuestro juicio, para entender c├│mo se orient├│ la represi├│n. Por otro, tras recapitular la problem├ítica de la guarda y custodia de la propiedad forestal p├║blica en el periodo en cuesti├│n, incluidos los cambios habidos en la legislaci├│n penal sobre montes, hemos considerado la distribuci├│n, tambi├ęn temporal y espacial, de las denuncias efectuadas por la Guardia Civil entre 1877 y 1910. Por ├║ltimo, hemos analizado conjuntamente los elementos presentados.The forest policy enacted in Spain from 1859 to 1926 was very ambitious. It sought to privatise the vast majority of lands that had belonged to the state and, at the same time, created a new public forest patrimony, whose management went through a growing privatisation of forest uses. Therefore, applying it in territories that were diverse from a natural, economic, and social point of view brought about public contempt, was the source of conflict. and made the ensuing repression inevitable. The orientation of this repression was not left to chance. On the contrary, it was complementary to the privatisation process of the property and to access for the public to use the forest. To prove this claim, this article considers what we believe to be appropriate instances of both. On the one hand, we present the cited privatisation process within its time and space dimensions and we establish the patterns of productive specialisation of the forest that continued to be public. This process constitutes the main driving force for the privatisation of their uses and is, from our point of view, relevant to understand how the repression was oriented. On the other hand, after reviewing the problems related to the surveillance of public forest lands in the cited period, changes in criminal law on forests included, we consider the distribution, also from a spatial and temporal perspective, of the complaints reported by the Civil Guard between 1877 and 1910. We end by analysing the issues presented
