Exploiting hand sketching in educating 'mechanically oriented' engineering students

The financial support provided by the University of Malta through the research grant ‘Innovative 'Early Stage' Design Product Prototyping’ (IMERP02-01).It is well known that even though Computer-Aided Design (CAD) systems are available, sketching is still widely used in design synthesis. Mechanical engineering students must therefore be cultured and trained to exploit sketching during this crucial activity in the basic design cycle. However, in our years of experience in training such students we found a strong tendency that due to the overall knowledge transfer they receive, these future engineers tend to be oriented in mainly thinking and presenting details of their design solution. Whilst clearly design solutions need to be eventually described in detail for their successful realization, good detailed design solutions do not make up for poor solution concepts generated. In this paper, we therefore present the overall pedagogic approach adopted at the University of Malta in exploiting sketching both for expressing working principle solutions and also for early form design. In addition, this paper outlines how a prescribed sketching language was developed to enable co-located students to quickly express and exchange 3D CAD models of their sketches, all this helping in making 'global design' truly feasible even at the early design stages.peer-reviewe

Engineering design project : series 1

This book is a compilation of engineering design projects which illustrates a detail explanation on the design process including all tools and methods involved in each design stage. The presented projects have been selected to prepare engineering students with the adequate knowledge and skills required in organizing product based project, formulating problems, generating and evaluating alternatives, preparing technical documentation and considering the sustainable and economic constraints for the product development and realization stage using the integration of various disciplines in mechanical and manufacturing engineering. This book is generally suitable as a reference to project-oriented problem-based learning (POPBL) activities at engineering institutions

    Modelling iteration in engineering design

    Get PDF
This paper examines design iteration and its modelling in the simulation of New Product Development (NPD) processes. A framework comprising six perspectives of iteration is proposed and it is argued that the importance of each perspective depends upon domain-specific factors. Key challenges of modelling iteration in process simulation frameworks such as the Design Structure Matrix are discussed, and we argue that no single model or framework can fully capture the iterative dynamics of an NPD process. To conclude, we propose that consideration of iteration and its representation could help identify the most appropriate modelling framework for a given process and modelling objective, thereby improving the fidelity of design process simulation models and increasing their utility

Problem Based Learning and its use on the Automotive Engineering Design Course at Coventry University

    Get PDF
The Automotive Engineering Design course at Coventry University has been in operation since October 1989 and has earned a reputation for creating able engineers well prepared for industry. When originally conceived, a problem led approach to learning was adopted across the course. This approach best enables the course objectives to be satisfied. However, there is nothing new about problem-based learning for engineering design educators but for our engineering science colleagues a degree of novelty has been encountered by this approach. But is the success of the course purely down to this teaching and learning approach? This paper will discuss the opportunities, benefits and limitations of the problem-led approach being extended across a whole course. The paper also will address how the use of industrially defined problems in engineering design projects has been critical to the development of the course. The paper will then attempt to identify the key factors that lie behind the success of the Automotive Engineering Design course. Finally, a set of best practice guidelines for engineering design education will be presented based upon my experiences as the Course Tutor and a teacher of engineering design on this course

Perencanaan Detail Engineering Design (Ded) Instalasi Pengolahan Lindi (Ipl) Peningkatan Tempat Pemrosesan Akhir (Tpa) Jatibarang Kota Semarang
