This paper examines theory and evidence from recent studies into the contributions to economic growth of expenditure on education and on research and development. Investment in human capital has fundamentally different economic attributes to physical investment - exhibiting complementarity, positive feedback and non-rivalry - implying the potential to enhance economic growth over a long time period. In the case of education, there are debates over whether changes in educational attainment ultimately affect the long-run growth rate of the economy, or only the long-run level of output. The macroeconomic evidence on level effects is consistent with microeconomic estimates of private rates of return to schooling. It appears, however, that there are also significant long-term growth effects the more educated is the workforce, the better is it able to implement technological advances. There is consistent evidence of high social rates of return on research and development in both commercial areas of research and in more fundamental research, implying that R&D is under-resourced. A number of studies have emphasised the importance of international technology spillovers, particularly for smaller economies such as Australia.

Education Level and Standard - an Important Factor in National Competitiveness

The competitiveness of a national economy is an important determinant in its international standing. In addition, the degree of competitiveness achieved determines the chances of each national economy for lasting and stable growth and development. The level achieved, the success generated and the framework for its distribution determines, among other things, the possible level of personal and public consumption. The standard of education, both formally and in terms of up-to-date useful knowledge and skills is one of the basic factors that affect the ability to create new wealth. Croatia, for a long time, as a result of the war and post-war conditions, and also because of its specific degree of (self-imposed) isolation, has ceased to concern itself with this factor. The present level of economic openness, and the undoubted process of moving towards the European Union, has drastically intensified the need for a catch-up strategy for in the process of education development at the national level.competitiveness, economic growth and development, standard of education, (un)employment, regional and global standing of the state.

In this study, we examine the impact of an individual's education level on her/his mating success on the mobile dating app Tinder. To do so, we conducted a field experiment on Tinder in which we collected data on 3,600 profile evaluations. In line with previous research on mating preferences from multiple fields, our results indicate a heterogeneous effect of education level by gender: while women strongly prefer a highly educated potential partner, this hypothesis is rejected for men. In contrast with recent influential studies from the field of economics, we do not find any evidence that men would have an aversion to a highly educated potential partner. Additionally, in contrast with most previous research - again from multiple fields we do not find any evidence for preferences for educational assortative mating, i.e. preferring a partner with a similar education level

The value of an educated population for an individual's entrepreneurship success

Human capital obtained through education has been shown to be one of the strongest drivers of entrepreneurship performance. The entrepreneur’s human capital, though, is only one of the input factors into the production process of her venture. In this paper we will analyze to what extent the education levels of other (potential) stakeholders affect the entrepreneur’s performance. The education level of consumers may shape the demand function for an entrepreneur’s output, whereas the education level of employees may affect the entrepreneur’s productivity and thereby shape her supply function. Based on this, we hypothesize that the performance of an entrepreneur is not only affected positively by her own education level but in addition, also by the education level of the population. We find empirical support for this hypothesis using an eight years (1994-2001) panel of labor market participants in the EU-15 countries. An implication of our finding is that entrepreneurship and higher education policies should be considered in tandem with each other.
