Equivalence of disturbance observer structures for linear systems
Several techniques exist to incorporate disturbance rejection requirements in a linear controller design. Contrary to, for example the H-infinity controller design technique where only one degree of freedom is available to obtain both disturbance rejection and performance, a disturbance observer adds a degree of freedom, thereby enabling a separate design of the disturbance rejection and the performance. There are many ways to design, implement and represent disturbance observers. We focus on two design methodologies and their corresponding representations. It can be shown that, in the case that the (SISO) plant is linear, the methodologies result in an equivalent disturbance observer. We use this equivalence to relate some properties well-known for one methodology to the other methodology, and vice vers
Disturbance Attenuation in a Magnetic Levitation System with Acceleration Feedback
The objective of this work is to demonstrate the use of acceleration feedback to improve the performance of a maglev system, especially in disturbance attenuation. In the single degree-of-freedom (DOF) system studied here, acceleration feedback has the effect of virtually increasing inertia, damping and stiffness. It is shown that it can be used to increase disturbance rejection without sacrificing tracking performance. Both analytical and experimental results demonstrate that disturbance rejection can be improved with acceleration feedback
Linear active disturbance rejection control of waste heat recovery systems with organic Rankine cycles
In this paper, a linear active disturbance rejection controller is proposed for a waste heat recovery system using an organic Rankine cycle process, whose model is obtained by applying the system identification technique. The disturbances imposed on the waste heat recovery system are estimated through an extended linear state observer and then compensated by a linear feedback control strategy. The proposed control strategy is applied to a 100 kW waste heat recovery system to handle the power demand variations of grid and process disturbances. The effectiveness of this controller is verified via a simulation study, and the results demonstrate that the proposed strategy can provide satisfactory tracking performance and disturbance rejection
Suppression of line voltage related distortion in current controlled grid connected inverters
The influence of selected control strategies on the level
of low-order current harmonic distortion generated by an inverter
connected to a distorted grid is investigated through a combination
of theoretical and experimental studies. A detailed theoretical
analysis, based on the concept of harmonic impedance, establishes
the suitability of inductor current feedback versus output
current feedback with respect to inverter power quality. Experimental
results, obtained from a purpose-built 500-W, three-level,
half-bridge inverter with an L-C-L output filter, verify the efficacy of inductor current as the feedback variable, yielding an
output current total harmonic distortion (THD) some 29% lower
than that achieved using output current feedback. A feed-forward
grid voltage disturbance rejection scheme is proposed as a means to
further reduce the level of low-order current harmonic distortion.
Results obtained from an inverter with inductor current feedback
and optimized feed-forward disturbance rejection show a THD of
just 3% at full-load, representing an improvement of some 53% on
the same inverter with output current feedback and no feed-forward
compensation. Significant improvements in THD were also
achieved across the entire load range. It is concluded that the use
of inductor current feedback and feed-forward voltage disturbance
rejection represent cost–effect mechanisms for achieving improved
output current quality
Reduced Order Controller Design for Robust Output Regulation
We study robust output regulation for parabolic partial differential
equations and other infinite-dimensional linear systems with analytic
semigroups. As our main results we show that robust output tracking and
disturbance rejection for our class of systems can be achieved using a
finite-dimensional controller and present algorithms for construction of two
different internal model based robust controllers. The controller parameters
are chosen based on a Galerkin approximation of the original PDE system and
employ balanced truncation to reduce the orders of the controllers. In the
second part of the paper we design controllers for robust output tracking and
disturbance rejection for a 1D reaction-diffusion equation with boundary
disturbances, a 2D diffusion-convection equation, and a 1D beam equation with
Kelvin-Voigt damping.Comment: Revised version with minor improvements and corrections. 28 pages, 9

An Omnidirectional Aerial Manipulation Platform for Contact-Based Inspection
This paper presents an omnidirectional aerial manipulation platform for
robust and responsive interaction with unstructured environments, toward the
goal of contact-based inspection. The fully actuated tilt-rotor aerial system
is equipped with a rigidly mounted end-effector, and is able to exert a 6
degree of freedom force and torque, decoupling the system's translational and
rotational dynamics, and enabling precise interaction with the environment
while maintaining stability. An impedance controller with selective apparent
inertia is formulated to permit compliance in certain degrees of freedom while
achieving precise trajectory tracking and disturbance rejection in others.
Experiments demonstrate disturbance rejection, push-and-slide interaction, and
on-board state estimation with depth servoing to interact with local surfaces.
The system is also validated as a tool for contact-based non-destructive
testing of concrete infrastructure.Comment: Accepted submission to Robotics: Science and Systems conference 2019.
