    Successful Management of an Outsourced Large-scale Digitization Newspaper Project

    This article uses the case study of the Nevada Digital Newspaper Project (https://nvdnp.wordpress.com/), an extension of the National Digital Newspaper Program (https://www.loc.gov/ndnp/), to introduce proven strategies on how to successfully manage a large-scale digitization project. It provides tips on how to stay within the timeline and deliver products with outstanding quality, leveraging limited human resources, and engaging an external digitization vendor. It discusses practical project management techniques and tools, strategies for establishing collaborative vendor partnerships, and strategies for efficient communication with stakeholders

    Assessment of biodiversity data holdings and user data needs for Ghana

    Data on biodiversity are important to addressing the challenges of sustainable development, and for decision-making about natural resources and environments. Biodiversity information, when mobilized and shared openly, has the potential to impact science and conservation positively. However, biodiversity data mobilization is expensive, such that data mobilization and sharing activities must be prioritized to meet the needs of the user community. In this study, we undertook a detailed assessment of biodiversity data holdings and user needs in Ghana through semi-structured questionnaire interviews, and focus-group discussions in the form of a workshop. Most biodiversity data-holding organizations were at preliminary stages of digital biodiversity data mobilization and sharing. Taxonomic, checklist, and geographic data on plants and animals were identified as most needed. Priority thematic needs were as regards protected areas, invasive alien species, threatened species, economic species (timber and non-timber forest products), and pathogens and diseases. Human and infrastructural capacities, and sustainable coordination were identified as the major challenges to biodiversity data management. This study provides a detailed case study of how assessing biodiversity data holdings and user data needs can be used to strategize biodiversity data mobilization, data publication, and data use activities

    Biodiversity Data: Refinement of Technology and Implementation Methods

    Biodiversity data consists of taxonomic specimens and information that inform our interpretations of ecosystems and life on Earth. Museum projects, exhibitions, and research utilize biodiversity data to construct answers and educational programming for staff and visitors. Cleaning and maintaining biodiversity data, however, is a difficult challenge that involves moderation and refinement of data entry, inventory, workflows, and protocols. Creating an ideal framework that involves the utilization of technology and the management practices of data standards will help in developing baseline recommendations for institutions struggling to maintain their biodiversity collections. Surveys were sent to listservs and museum professionals to acquire interpretation and data surrounding biodiversity data practices. From survey results, three interviews/case studies were performed with one staff member, respectively, from the University of Wyoming Museum of Vertebrates, Bernice Pauahi Bishop Museum, and the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History. These interviews and surveys, in conjunction with a literature review, were conducted to explore processes and strategies currently being utilized to develop biodiversity data frameworks. Results indicate a strong desire for customizable and malleable databases that integrate institutional-level decision-making and preventative error protocols. In addition, thorough documentation and active engagement with staff and volunteers contribute to long-term benefits to data management standards

    Advancing 3D Digitization for Libraries, Museums, and Archives

    Digitizing collections has become a standard practice for libraries, museums, and archives. These collections include flat objects, photographs, negatives, microfilm, audio and video materials. Utilizing established workflows and best practices, these collections are easily accessible through content management systems and shareable through standardized metadata and exchange protocols, exemplified by the success of the Digital Public Library of America (DPLA). While the digitization of 2D objects continues, affordable 3D technologies are advancing opportunities for the same institutions to consider including 3D objects in their digital collections. The IUPUI University Library Center for Digital Scholarship is working towards a like basis of standards for scanned 3D artifacts in and incorporating those standards into current digital initiatives
