    Linear matching method on the evaluation of cyclic behaviour with creep effect

    This paper describes a new Linear Matching Method (LMM) technique for the direct evaluation of cyclic behaviour with creep effects of structures subjected to a general load condition in the steady cyclic state. The creep strain and plastic strain range for use in creep damage and fatigue assessments, respectively, are obtained. A benchmark example of a Bree cylinder subjected to cyclic thermal load and constant mechanical load is analysed to verify the applicability of the new LMM to deal with the creep fatigue damage. The cyclic responses for different loading conditions and dwell time periods within the Bree boundary are obtained. To demonstrate the efficiency and effectiveness of the method for more complex structures, a 3D holed plate subjected to cyclic thermal loads and constant axial tension is analysed. The results of both examples show that with the presence of creep the cyclic responses change significantly. The new LMM procedure provides a general purpose technique for the evaluation of cyclic behaviour, the plastic strain range and creep strain for the creep fatigue damage assessment with creep fatigue interaction

    Linear matching method for design limits in plasticity

    In this paper a state-of-the-art numerical method is discussed for the evaluation of the shakedown and ratchet limits for an elastic-perfectly plastic body subjected to cyclic thermal and mechanical load history. The limit load or collapse load, i.e. the load carrying capacity, is also determined as a special case of shakedown analysis. These design limits in plasticity have been solved by characterizing the steady cyclic state using a general cyclic minimum theorem. For a prescribed class of kinematically admissible inelastic strain rate histories, the minimum of the functional for these design limits are found by a programming method, the Linear Matching Method (LMM), which converges to the least upper bound. By ensuring that both equilibrium and compatibility are satisfied at each stage, a direct algorithm has also been derived to determine the lower bound of shakedown and ratchet limit using the best residual stress calculated during the LMM procedure. Three practical examples of the LMM are provided to confirm the efficiency and effectiveness of the method: the behaviour of a complex 3D tubeplate in a typical AGR superheater header, the behaviour of a fiber reinforced metal matrix composite under loading and thermal cycling conditions, and effects of drilling holes on the ratchet limit and crack tip plastic strain range fora centre cracked plate subjected to constant tensile loading and cyclic bending moment

    The effect of the number of response cycles on the behaviour of reinforced concrete elements subject to cyclic loading

    The development of damage in reinforced concrete (RC) structures is a cumulative process. Some damage indices used to quantify damage make use of the number of response cycles as an Engineering Demand Parameter (EDP) relating with damage development. Other indices make use of deformation in terms of displacement or chord rotation. These functions are generally a function of whether the response is monotonic or cyclic, and are insensitive to the number of major deflection cycles leading to that state of damage. Many such relations are derived from experimental data from low-cycle fatigue tests performed on RC elements. The loading in such tests generally consists of either a monotonic increase in load or a gradually increasing cyclic load. Since damage development is a cumulative process, and hence depends on the load history, the loading pattern in low-cycle fatigue tests for assessment purposes should reflect the response of an earthquake. This paper will discuss a procedure to determine a loading history for cyclic tests, based on earthquake demands. The preliminary results of a campaign of low-cycle fatigue tests on RC elements to investigate the effect of using different load histories are also discussed

    Ratchet analysis of structures under a generalised cyclic load history

    This paper introduces a new approach based upon the Linear Matching Method in order to obtain the ratchet limit of structures subjected to an arbitrary thermo-mechanical load history. This method varies from the traditional Linear Matching Method ratchet analysis, where the cyclic load history is decomposed into cyclic and constant components, instead calculating the ratchet limit with respect to a proportional cyclic load variation, as opposed to an additional constant load. The shakedown and limit load boundaries are initially obtained for the given structure, followed by the utilisation of a bisection procedure in order to calculate an approximate ratchet boundary based upon a predefined magnitude of ratchet strain per cycle. The method also yields the total and plastic strain ranges based upon perfect plasticity, for low-cycle fatigue post-processing considerations. The effects of analysing the ratcheting mechanism of structures undergoing a cyclic primary load that varies proportionally with a cyclic secondary load can be seen to lead to modified and less conservative ratchet boundaries compared to the traditional Bree solution in which the thermal ratcheting requirement (NB-3222.5) of ASME III is based upon.     Hygrothermomechanical evaluation of transverse filament tape epoxy/polyester fiberglass composites

    The static and cyclic load behavior of transverse filament tape (TFT) fiberglass/epoxy and TFY fiberglass/polyester composites, intended for use in the design of low-cost wind turbine blades, are presented. The data behavior is also evaluated with respect to predicted properties based on an integrated hygrothermomechanical response theory. Experimental TFT composite data were developed by the testing of laminates made by using composite layups typical of those used for the fabrication of TFT fiberglass wind turbine blades. Static properties include tension, compression, and interlaminar shear strengths at ambient conditions and at high humidity/elevated temperature conditions after a 500 hour exposure. Cyclic fatigue data were obtained using similar environmental conditions and a range of cyclic stresses. The environmental (temperature and moisture) and cyclic load effects on composite strength degradation are subsequently compared with the predictions obtained by using the composite life/durability theory. The results obtained show that the predicted hygrothermomechanical environmental effects on TFT composites are in good agreement with measured data for various properties including fatigue at different cyclic stresses

Two loading conditions are considered: i) a cyclic temperature load and a constant internal pressure; and ii) a cyclic temperature load and a constant axial tension. Individual effects of i) the geometry of the Weld Metal (WM), ii) the size of the crack, iii) the location of the crack and iv) the yield stress of WM on the ratchet limits, maximum temperature ranges to avoid ratchetting and limit loads are investigated. Influence functions of the yield stress of WM on the maximum temperature ranges and limit loads are generated. The results confirm the applicability of the extended LMM to the cracked welded pipe

    Cyclic-stress analysis of notches for supersonic transport conditions

    The feasibility of using the finite element method to account for the effects of cyclic load and temperature on local stresses and strains at a notch was demonstrated. The behavior of a notched titanium panel was studied under variable loads and temperatures representative of flight conditions for the lower wing surface of a Supersonic Transport (SST). The analysis was performed with the use of the BOPACE finite-element computer program which provides capability to determine high temperature and large viscoplastic effects caused by cyclic thermal and mechanical loads. The analysis involves the development of the finite-element model as well as determination of the structural behavior of the notched panel. Results are presented for twelve SST flights comprised of five different load-temperature cycles. The results show the approach is feasible, but material response to cyclic loads, temperatures, and hold times requires improved understanding to allow proper modeling of the material

    Integrated structural analysis tool using linear matching method part 1 : Software development

    A number of direct methods based upon the Linear Matching Method (LMM) framework have been developed to address structural integrity issues for components subjected to cyclic thermal and mechanical load conditions. This paper presents a new integrated structural analysis tool using the LMM framework for the assessment of load carrying capacity, shakedown limit, ratchet limit and steady state cyclic response of structures. First, the development of the LMM for the evaluation of design limits in plasticity is introduced. Second, preliminary considerations for the development of the LMM into a tool which can be used on a regular basis by engineers are discussed. After the re-structuring of the LMM subroutines for multiple CPU solution, the LMM software tool for the assessment of design limits in plasticity is implemented by developing an Abaqus CAE plug-­in with graphical user interfaces. Further demonstration of this new LMM analysis tool including practical application and verification is presented in an accompanying paper
