Avant-garde art display recreations historised: Muzeum Sztuki in Lódz as a referential case?

Museums can no longer pretend to be mere containers of art or other cultural treasures; their fascinating legacy for posterity is definitely not just the respective collection, but also its idiosyncratic articulation and ulterior resignification. This essay surveys sifting trends in the re-staging of modern museographies; but instead of using New York’s MoMA as the obvious paradigm, pride of place is given here to the Muzeum Sztuki in Łódź (Poland). Its original Neoplastic Hall survived only from June 1948 until October 1950; but it was reconstructed ten years later, prefiguring other museographical remakes of avant-garde art displays. Thereafter, it also became, in many ways, a typical example characterising postmodern museological trends. All in all, it could perhaps be discussed nowadays in the light of critical museology as a referential case in the history of heritagised museographies

The 43rd UID conference, held in Genova, takes up the theme of ‘Dialogues’ as practice and debate on many fundamental topics in our social life, especially in these complex and not yet resolved times. The city of Genova offers the opportunity to ponder on the value of comparison and on the possibilities for the community, naturally focused on the aspects that concern us, as professors, researchers, disseminators of knowledge, or on all the possibile meanings of the discipline of representation and its dialogue with ‘others’, which we have broadly catalogued in three macro areas: History, Semiotics, Science / Technology. Therefore, “dialogue” as a profitable exchange based on a common language, without which it is impossible to comprehend and understand one another; and the graphic sign that connotes the conference is the precise transcription of this concept: the title ‘translated’ into signs, derived from the visual alphabet designed for the visual identity of the UID since 2017. There are many topics which refer to three macro sessions: - Witnessing (signs and history) - Communicating (signs and semiotics) - Experimenting (signs and sciences) Thanks to the different points of view, an exceptional resource of our disciplinary area, we want to try to outline the prevailing theoretical-operational synergies, the collaborative lines of an instrumental nature, the recent updates of the repertoires of images that attest and nourish the relations among representation, history, semiotics, sciences

Matera. Cultura del cibo, green soft power e politiche agrourbane

Le interferenze tra cultura del cibo e pianificazione definiscono una posizione nuova della città, non più solo consumatrice, ma anche attore e interlocutore politico e culturale sulla triade cibo, società e territorio. A convalida di questa posizione, i temi introdotti dall’Expo 2015, facendo riferimento ai concetti di sviluppo urbano e smart e slow city, delineano nuovi possibili scenari di condivisione tra città, campagna, comunità locali e agricoltura. Da questa prospettiva, per Matera, vergogna nazionale e oggi capitale europea della cultura, ci interessa capire i lasciti di un progetto riformatore e quanto esso sia ancora utile per evitare che il percorso verso il 2019, riferendosi a modelli astratti proposti durante il processo di candidatura, che nulla hanno a che fare con la domanda di nuovi immaginari e di welfare per la città e per i cittadini, riproponga processi esogeni che destabilizzano e, piuttosto, confermano le posizioni di rendita senza costruire vero apprendimento, con il rischio sempre in agguato di produrre altre retoriche. La nozione di “post agricolo” elaborata dagli antropologi, più ancora che “post rurale”, appare, anche dal versante dell’urbanistica, un termine fecondo, più libero da visioni precedenti, capace di inglobare più facilmente un discorso di cittadinanze, di sviluppo a base locale e green economy, white job e volontariato, forme di appartenenza e spazi di condivisione, per chiedersi se è il concetto di città e di cittadinanza che continua a dilatarsi, e se la nozione di periurbano, arricchito dalla visuale del foodscape, può tornare utile per problematizzare

Il retail come condizione di modificazione dello spazio urbano

Il retail negli ultimi anni ha ricoperto un ruolo significativo all’interno di uno scenario sociale fortemente modificato, al quale corrispondono alcuni cambiamenti nella forma degli spazi delle nostre città. La progettazione dei luoghi del commercio non può più rispondere soltanto alle necessità funzionali e promozionali della vendita, ma deve immaginare ambienti che corrispondono a valori più articolati e selettivi, nei quali si riconoscano le diverse identità sociali. Una nuova complessità sembra andare di pari passo ad una nuova qualità urbana, secondo la quale lo spazio tipologico è stato sostituito da uno spazio incompleto, imperfetto, reversibile, espansivo e in continua trasformazione. In queste condizioni, l’architettura non è più una categoria capace di riassumere in se l’intero senso dello spazio, ma rappresenta soltanto una parte di un più complesso sistema di relazioni, tra soggetti di differente natura, naturali e artificiali, animati e inanimati, reali e virtuali

Icons: Normativity and Gender Inequalities

This contribution is aimed at offering a disciplinary viewpoint on the “rules without words” for the purpose of investigating “non-linguistic” normativity from the Communication Design perspective. The intention is therefore to examine how Communication Design shapes social reality through the creation or strengthening of social, normative and tacit rules. The focus of the observation are the non-linguistic expressions, rules, that contribute to the development or maintenance of gender-based social inequalities. Specifically, the observation concerns the forms of schematic representation which permeate everyday life and have an informative and prescriptive function, characterized by a high degree of objectivity and addressed to the whole community - both men and women. The contribution inserts itself within an international framework in which the importance of gender equality is central and reaffirmed by the ONU Agenda 2030 and the Resolution of the European Parliament 2018 (2017/2210(INI))

Extending museum beyond physical space:A Data-Driven Study of Aldo Rossi's Analogous City as a Mobile Museum Object

Aldo Rossi composed the famous collage known as Analogous City for the Venice Biennale in 1976. This text presents a visual study of the collage through both physical and digital means: a mobile app works in conjunction with a reprint of the Analogous City in the format of a city map. Forty years after its creation, the collage’s original elements are finally identified and collected, and the mechanisms of composition are disclosed thanks to Fabio Reinhart’s contribution. The map of the Analogous City is analyzed in both historical and museum viewpoints, focusing on the reflections that emerged when exhibiting in Maastricht, Milan, Lausanne, Bergamo, and Rome. Although the map was designed as an interactive installation for these exhibitions, it has turned out to be also an educational tool useful outside museums. If Aldo Rossi created an artwork to think about the reconstruction of the city, likewise, the map of the Analogous City helps to rethink museums by designing their objects in a way they can leave the exhibition for a second life in the city
