Effect of System Factors on Whistleblowing Attitude of Nigerian Banks Employees: A Conceptual Perspective

    Get PDF
Whistleblowing provides a self-correcting mechanism for an organization to prevent unethical practices. Lessons from collapsed businesses around the world show that organisations do not just collapse, but rather it is a gradual process resulting from a series of inappropriate acts left unaddressed. This paper is based on a conceptual perspective. Past studies on whistleblowing were reviewed, gaps and weaknesses identified to develop a conceptual framework on whistleblowing reporting attitude of bank employees in Nigeria. The conceptual framework is anchored on the Resource Dependence (RD) and Planned Behaviour (PB) theories. The paper provides important lessons for promoting ethical practices in organisations and the society at large. Based on the gaps in literature, this paper recommends among others a performance review system that is tied to rewarding whistleblowing; ways to protect whistleblowers and the need to strengthen organizational support structures for whistleblowing. A Novel Approach for Enhancing Performance of VoD Systems

Multimedia applications such as Video-on-Demand (VoD), Live streaming, Internet stock quotes, Internet radio, audio/music delivery, video surveillance are of growing interest among general public. Existing systems that support these kinds of applications such as centralized server, independent server nodes, and proxy incur significant delay and serve only less number of videos. In this research, a multi-server system that utilizes a split and merge scheme is proposed to reduce the waiting time. This system helps us to achieve load balancing, while increasing the number of videos being served. Our simulation model consists of a single main multimedia server and a set of streaming servers. The performance of the proposed system for various K values is evaluated in the VoD scenario. The results show that the proposed multi-server scheme performs better in terms of initial latency and number of videos being served, compared to the other existing schemes. Conferência Internacional, realizada em Olhão, Algarve, de 26-28 de abril de 2018.The Tele-Media-Art project aims to promote the improvement of the online distance learning and artistic teaching process applied in the teaching of two test scenarios, doctorate in digital art-media and the lifelong learning course ”the experience of diversity” by exploiting multimodal telepresence facilities encompassing the diversified visual, auditory and sensory channels, as well as rich forms of gestural / body interaction. To this end, a telepresence system was developed to be installed at Palácio Ceia, in Lisbon, Portugal, headquarters of the Portuguese Open University, from which methodologies of artistic teaching in mixed regime - face-to-face and online distance - that are inclusive to blind and partially sighted students. This system has already been tested against a group of subjects, including blind people. Although positive results were achieved, more development and further tests will be carried in the futureThis project was financed by Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation under Grant number 142793.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Optimal Bandwidth Selection for DENCLUE

In modern day industry, clustering algorithms are daily routines of algorithm engineers. Although clustering algorithms experienced rapid growth before 2010. Innovation related to the research topic has stagnated after deep learning became the de facto industrial standard for machine learning applications. In 2007, a density-based clustering algorithm named DENCLUE was invented to solve clustering problem for nonlinear data structures. However, its parameter selection problem was largely neglected until 2011. In this paper, we propose a new approach to compute the optimal parameters for the DENCLUE algorithm, and discuss its performance in the experiment section

Enhancement of mammogram for detection of breast cancer using adaptive median filter

    Get PDF
Digital mammogram becomes the most effective technique for early breast cancer detection modality and processing these images requires high computational capabilities. Computer image processing techniques will be applied to enhance images. This paper attempts to study about pre-processing is the most important step in the mammogram analysis due to poor captured mammogram image quality. Pre-processing is very important to correct and adjust the mammogram image for further study and processing. Different types of filtering techniques are available for pre-processing. Filters are used to improve image quality, remove the noise, preserves the edges within an image, enhance and smoothen the image. The experimental results concludes that the adaptive median filter is best for mammogram image noise removal and gives better performance by estimating the PSNR values Keywords: Median filter, Adaptive median filter, Peak Signal to Noise Ratio, Mean Squared Error

Microwave dielectric property based classification of malignancies

    Get PDF
Broadband dielectric property measurements of bi- ological tissues is mostly performed with open ended coaxial probe technique due to a number of advantages such as flexible sample shape and size. However, the technique is known to suffer from high error rates; thus, envisioned applications of the technique remains hampered by this problem. One way to mitigate such error for medical applications is to perform tissue classification with machine learning algorithms. In this work, Cole-Cole parameters of rat liver dielectric properties are used for training and testing of an in house Support Vector Machine (SVM) algorithm to enable malignant tissue classification. Cole- Cole parameters are fitted with Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) to a total of 700 dielectric property measurements collected from 22 rats. The Cole-Cole parameters are fed to the SVM algorithm and k-fold cross validation is used to prevent the algorithm from memorizing the data. Hepatic malignancies are classified with 96% accuracy where a better accuracy is obtained in comparison to plain dielectric property measurement and also an automated decision making mechanism is enabled.MyWave COST Action COST CA17115 and Istanbul Technical Universit
