Boundaries of Semantic Distraction: Dominance and Lexicality Act at Retrieval
Three experiments investigated memory for semantic information with the goal of determining boundary conditions for the manifestation of semantic auditory distraction. Irrelevant speech disrupted the free recall of semantic category-exemplars to an equal degree regardless of whether the speech coincided with presentation or test phases of the task (Experiment 1) and occurred regardless of whether it comprised random words or coherent sentences (Experiment 2). The effects of background speech were greater when the irrelevant speech was semantically related to the to-be-remembered material, but only when the irrelevant words were high in output dominance (Experiment 3). The implications of these findings in relation to the processing of task material and the processing of background speech is discussed
Dynamic Tensor Clustering
Dynamic tensor data are becoming prevalent in numerous applications. Existing
tensor clustering methods either fail to account for the dynamic nature of the
data, or are inapplicable to a general-order tensor. Also there is often a gap
between statistical guarantee and computational efficiency for existing tensor
clustering solutions. In this article, we aim to bridge this gap by proposing a
new dynamic tensor clustering method, which takes into account both sparsity
and fusion structures, and enjoys strong statistical guarantees as well as high
computational efficiency. Our proposal is based upon a new structured tensor
factorization that encourages both sparsity and smoothness in parameters along
the specified tensor modes. Computationally, we develop a highly efficient
optimization algorithm that benefits from substantial dimension reduction. In
theory, we first establish a non-asymptotic error bound for the estimator from
the structured tensor factorization. Built upon this error bound, we then
derive the rate of convergence of the estimated cluster centers, and show that
the estimated clusters recover the true cluster structures with a high
probability. Moreover, our proposed method can be naturally extended to
co-clustering of multiple modes of the tensor data. The efficacy of our
approach is illustrated via simulations and a brain dynamic functional

Self-organization and clustering algorithms
Kohonen's feature maps approach to clustering is often likened to the k or c-means clustering algorithms. Here, the author identifies some similarities and differences between the hard and fuzzy c-Means (HCM/FCM) or ISODATA algorithms and Kohonen's self-organizing approach. The author concludes that some differences are significant, but at the same time there may be some important unknown relationships between the two methodologies. Collaborative Summarization of Topic-Related Videos
Large collections of videos are grouped into clusters by a topic keyword,
such as Eiffel Tower or Surfing, with many important visual concepts repeating
across them. Such a topically close set of videos have mutual influence on each
other, which could be used to summarize one of them by exploiting information
from others in the set. We build on this intuition to develop a novel approach
to extract a summary that simultaneously captures both important
particularities arising in the given video, as well as, generalities identified
from the set of videos. The topic-related videos provide visual context to
identify the important parts of the video being summarized. We achieve this by
developing a collaborative sparse optimization method which can be efficiently
solved by a half-quadratic minimization algorithm. Our work builds upon the
idea of collaborative techniques from information retrieval and natural
language processing, which typically use the attributes of other similar
objects to predict the attribute of a given object. Experiments on two
challenging and diverse datasets well demonstrate the efficacy of our approach
