Rhabdomyosarcoma rarely metastasizes to the breast. We report a case of a pediatric patient who initially presented with a right breast mass and pancytopenia, which was subsequently diagnosed as alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma. Despite initial favorable response to chemotherapy, a new metastatic focus was found in the contralateral breast 10 months later

Unexpected Metastasis of High Grade Serous Ovarian Cancer to Breast: Case Report and Literature Review

Introduction: Metastasis of ovarian serous carcinoma to breast and/or axillary lymph nodes represents an unusual event. Nevertheless, their detection and distinction from mammary carcinoma are of huge clinical importance because the treatment and prognosis diverge significantly. Case presentation: We report a case of a 47 year-old Caucasian female patient with unforeseen metastasis to the breast and to axillary lymph nodes due to ovarian serous carcinoma. Conclusion: In patients with history of OSC who present with axillary or breast mass, an accurate histological diagnosis should be obtained since this has a great impact on treatment outcomes

    Enormous, rapidly growing breast mass.

BACKGROUND: Signs and symptoms of a rapidly enlarging breast mass are not only important for all clinicians to recognize and assess, but also are not uncommon occurrences. We describe a similar but unique case that developed into an enormous, 36 cm exophytic mass. CASE PRESENTATION: A 51-year-old woman with history of psychiatric conditions presented for signs and symptoms of sepsis. It was determined that the source was an enormous 36 cm mass originating from the breast/chest wall. After stabilizing the patient with antibiotics, she underwent successful resection. Surgical margins were positive, and histopathology demonstrated bland spindle cells with stromal overgrowth. Together with clinical and histopathological information, the patient was diagnosed with a phyllodes tumor. CONCLUSION: Differential diagnosis of rapidly growing breast masses is discussed, which are not uncommon occurrences in clinical medicine. One etiology, phyllodes tumors, can grow into large, exophytic masses as described. Oncologic treatment is discussed, usually consisting of surgery with postoperative radiotherapy for high-risk features

Tuberculosis of the breast: A case report

    Get PDF
Tuberculosis of the breast is a rare disease. It is often misdiagnosed because it exhibits features that mimic a carcinoma both clinically and radiologically. This in the past has led to unnecessary mastectomies. The objective is to report a patient who presented with left breast mass and ipsilateral axillary swellings that was confirmed to be tuberculosis. The index patient is a 20- year old female who presented with left breast mass predated by ispilateral axillary swellings of 7 weeks duration prior to presentation. Excision biopsy of both the breast mass and axillary swellings revealed tuberculous mastitis. She was commenced on antituberculous treatment with significant improvement. With a high index of suspicion, a diagnosis will be established. It is therefore advised that surgeons should always think of this disease entity as a  differential diagnosis when dealing with breast masses. Keywords: Tuberculosis, Breast, Histopatholog

RATE OF MALIGNANT BREAST CANCER AMONG WOMEN WITH BREAST MASS ATTENDING ALDEWANIYAH TEACHING HOSPITALS: A CROSS-SECTIONAL STUDY

Objective: The problems of breast mass, pain, or discharge are extremely common in the Iraqi population, as well as, globally. However, the trend in most health-care institutions is that most breast lesions are of benign biologic behavior and among true neoplastic lesions. Marital status has been linked to the outcome of breast malignancy; however, the link is controversial. Thus, the aim of the present study is to make a clear insight into the true incidence rate of carcinoma and their risk factors. Materials and Methods: The study was designed to be a cross-sectional study involving a cohort of 182 Iraqi women with the breast mass. Patients were selected in a systemic random way from the population of patients already visiting the surgical consultation clinic and ward and oncology unit in Al-Dewaniyah teaching hospital in Al-Diwaniyah province, Iraq. Result: The present study showed that the most breast lesions (82%) were benign, and the most frequent one was a fibroadenoma (37.4%). Malignant lesions accounted for a small percentage (17.4%). Mean age of patients with carcinoma was 49.78±7.58 years and most all cases occurred after 20 years of age and that 87.5% of cases were seen after the age of 40. Majority of breast carcinoma were of invasive ductal carcinoma. No significant association was seen between the clinical behavior of breast mass and marital status; however, malignant clinical behavior showed significant association with age. Conclusion: The incidence rate of malignant breast lesions in Iraqi women with breast mass is similar to that seen worldwide and that age is the main risk factor that predicts the malignant clinical behavior of a breast mass

CHANGES IN LUMBAR JOINT MOMENTS USING A FEMALE SPECIFIC TORSO MODEL DURING RUNNING

The purpose of this study was to quantify the peak lumbar joint flexor / extensor moments following changes in torso and breast mass during running using an innovative computer musculoskeletal model. Kinematic and kinetic data were collected for a female participant running at 2.6 m/s. An MRI scan of the breasts was used to calculate breast mass and centre of mass location relative to the torso. An OpenSim whole body model was customised with two point-mass segments added to the torso to represent the breasts. Key findings have shown that changes in breast mass can cause peak lumbar flexor / extensors moments to be over or underestimated by up to ~18%. These results suggest that including the mass of the breasts in female specific models, during dynamic activities such as running, is an important aspect that must be considered for future work

A case of osteosarcoma presenting primarily as breast mass

Osteosarcoma presenting as a breast mass is a rare disease. We present a case of a 22 year old female who was admitted to our hospital with a complaint of left sided breast mass of 6months duration. On physical examination she had a huge mass on the left breast with no skin lesion and no lymph nodes. Pathology from biopsy showed osteosarcoma. Here we report the findings in detail along with current review of literature. Keywords: Osteosarcoma, Breas
