Space Shuttle Tail Service Mast Concept Verification

    Get PDF
Design studies and analyses were performed to describe the loads and dynamics of the space shuttle tail service masts (TSMs). Of particular interest are the motion and interaction of the umbilical carrier plate, lanyard system, vacuum jacketed hoses, latches, links, and masthead. A development test rig was designed and fabricated to obtain experimental data. The test program is designed to (1) verify the theoretical dynamics calculations, (2) prove the soundness of design concepts, and (3) elucidate problem areas (if any) in the design of mechanisms and structural components. Design, fabrication, and initiation of TSM development testing at Kennedy Space Center are described

Processing of yttrium-doped barium zirconate for high proton conductivity

The factors governing the transport properties of yttrium-doped barium zirconate (BYZ) have been explored, with the aim of attaining reproducible proton conductivity in well-densified samples. It was found that a small initial particle size (50–100 nm) and high-temperature sintering (1600 °C) in the presence of excess barium were essential. By this procedure, BaZr0.8Y0.2O3-d with 93% to 99% theoretical density and total (bulk plus grain boundary) conductivity of 7.9 × 10^-3 S/cm at 600 °C [as measured by alternating current (ac) impedance spectroscopy under humidified nitrogen] could be reliably prepared. Samples sintered in the absence of excess barium displayed yttria-like precipitates and a bulk conductivity that was reduced by more than 2 orders of magnitude

Single carbon nanotubes as ultrasmall all-optical memories

Performance improvements are expected from integration of photonic devices into information processing systems, and in particular, all-optical memories provide a key functionality. Scaling down the size of memory elements is desirable for high-density integration, and the use of nanomaterials would allow for devices that are significantly smaller than the operation wavelengths. Here we report on all-optical memory based on individual carbon nanotubes, where adsorbed molecules give rise to optical bistability. By exciting at the high-energy tail of the excitonic absorption resonance, nanotubes can be switched between the desorbed state and the adsorbed state. We demonstrate reversible and reproducible operation of the nanotube optical memory, and determine the rewriting speed by measuring the molecular adsorption and desorption times. Our results underscore the impact of molecular-scale effects on optical properties of nanomaterials, offering new design strategies for photonic devices that are a few orders of magnitude smaller than the optical diffraction limit.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figure

The objectives of this study were to analyse the effect of education, training, experience and compensation upon the managers ability in conducting job and the relationships with the success of KUD in the district of Kapuas at Central Kalimantan Province. The hypothesis of this study were: (1) Factors and elements of managers ability [Education (X1), Training (X2), Experience (X3) and Compensation (X4)] affect positively to managers ability in conducting their job at KUD; (2) Managers ability in conducting their job (Y) affect positively on the success of KUD. A survey was applied in the district of Kapuas, Central Kalimantan. In this study 45 KUD were sorted out as a sample and 45 managers of these KUD in the district. The hypothesis were tested using Structural Equation Modeling Analysis (SEM) and using LISREL 8.0 program. The results of this study indicated that (1) education, training, experience and compensation factors positively affected to the managers'ability in conducting their job. (2) The ability of managers in conducting their job in turn positively would affect to the success of KUD
