THE INFLUENCE OF MERCURY POLLUTION ON THE GROWTH OF BIO-INDICATOR PLANTS

    Get PDF
Heavy metals are found naturally in the earth, and become concentrated as a result of human caused activities. Common sources are from mining and industrial wastes, vehicle emissions, lead- acid batteries, fertilisers, paints, treated woods, aging water supply infrastructure, and microplastics floating in the world's oceans. Heavy metals enter plant, animal and human tissues via air inhalation, diet and manual handling. Most of these chemicals including mercury, lead, cadmium and their compounds are among the most common and highly toxic substances capable of accumulation in living organisms. Heavy metals with excessive exposure to environmental objects behave like ecotoxicants that negatively affect not only individual organisms, but also the ecosystem as a whole

This article reveals the possibilities of combining the urban environment and natural component, with the aim of improving the quality of the city, where innovative technological methods act as the connecting element. Modern approaches to control urban processes through media technologies have been studied. Considered a number of projects adopted principles of the sustainable urban environment and based on the analysis of the prototype of approved algorithms for the creation and/or regeneration of the city’s territory, as well as the optimal size of the informative space of the city. The potential of using high technologies for the implementation of a smart city and computerization of the urban environment was studied to simplify control for the purpose of safety and reduce the harmful effects of standard urban processes. On the basis of the conducted research, the concept of the so-called micro-policy was developed and a catalog-regulation on the characterization of the morphotype was compiled.

The parallax distorsion via a weak microlensing effect

    Get PDF
Parallax measurements allow distances to celestial objects to be determined. Coupled with measurement of their position on the celestial sphere, it gives a full three-dimensional picture of the location of the objects relative to the observer. The distortion of the parallax value of a remote source affected by a weak microlensing is considered. This means that the weak microlensing leads to distortion of the distance scale. It is shown that the distortions to appear may change strongly the parallax values in case they amount to several microseconds of arc. In particular, at this accuracy many measured values of the parallaxes must be negative.Comment: 34 LaTeX pages, 12 PostScript figure (epsfig.sty

This article belongs to the interface of terminology and translation studies and aims to describe the principles of meaning construction in the translation of field-specific terms in biodynamic osteopathy. The central problem of the study presented in this paper deals with identification and analysis of measurable components of meaning of terminological units. The data for the study comprises a corpus of 210 English terms in the field of biodynamic osteopathy translated into French, Italian, Russian and Latvian. Following the analysis of the meanings of the terms through their contextual uses, it is possible to assess other factors that contribute to the content of these units.Methodologically, we built a definition for each term based on its context. Next, we investigated the notion of semantic resonance that is relevant for terminological units derived from general language. The study suggests that even in the field of neology where the concepts are borrowed together with the terms, resonance can vary from one language to another, which, as a consequence, highlights the problem of cross-linguistic equivalence in the translation of texts in this field.

Strategic communication in women\u27s rights organizations: Tools, challenges and best practices

Despite rapid globalization and tremendous expansion of the number of women\u27s rights organizations, international attention to the issues of women and girls remains rather low. While some women\u27s rights networks and organizations leap to prominence, others do not receive recognition and public support. I wanted to know why. I interviewed 13 directors and communication managers of women\u27s rights non-governmental organizations to see how they manage communication. I used a convenience sample that included a wide range of geographical locations and sizes of NGOs. The interviews were held via Skype. I conducted a theme analysis of transcribed interviews. The participants indicated various communication goals, which included increased visibility, higher credibility and the engagement of multiple stakeholders. The leaders felt that although having a communication specialist in an NGO is important, executives must also be engaged in delivering effective communication strategies. Relationships with employees, donors and governments were said to be particularly important. The best practices in communication included truth and honesty, and new ways of community involvement through technology. Among the most cost-efficient types of technology, participants named mobile phones, social media, and blogs. The main communication challenges for women\u27s rights NGOs they identified were those associated with media relations and misuse of communication tools, as well as lack of resources and funding for communication goals. Generally, while some participants were dissatisfied with current communication strategies, most of them expressed hopeful and optimistic feelings about communication strategies in their NGOs. Through this thesis, I argue that the relative success of non-governmental organizations for women\u27s rights is not random. I emphasize the impact of strategic communication, particularly via the Internet, on women\u27s rights organizations. Strategic communication is an important public relations and/or marketing tool that allows the organization to enhance its overall strategic positioning and achieve visibility, accountability and sustainable development. As a feminist activist working for women\u27s NGO and scholar, I believe the results of this study will contribute to the understanding of both women\u27s rights NGOs and the larger social movements in which they exist, in the context of new communication practices, digital activism and information technologies
