    Some Men Just Want To Watch The World Burn: The Role Of Sensation Seeking, Impulsivity, And Empathy In Cyberbullying

    This study explored the potential role of sensation seeking, impulsivity, and empathy in cyberbullying behavior directed towards known and unknown persons. Sensation seeking is one’s propensity to desire novel situations and stimuli. Impulsivity is one’s tendency to engage in behavior without regard for potential consequences. Empathy is conceptualized as one’s ability to understand the experiences and emotions of others. Cyberbullying is the act of intentionally aggressing against another individual via some form of technology. University of Mississippi students (N=393) participated in an online survey and completed measures of the aforementioned variables. Cyberbullying behavior was measured in the context of aggressing towards both known and unknown persons. When sensation seeking was examined as a mediator between impulsivity and cyberbullying of known persons, a significant indirect path was found, indicating mediation. A similar trend relationship was observed for cyberbullying of unknown persons. Results and implications of findings are discussed

    Shear waves induced by moving needle in MR Elastography

    Magnetic Resonance Elastography (MRE) is a phase contrast-based method for observing shear wave propagation in a material to determine its stiffness. The objective of this study was to determine whether shear waves suitable for MRE can be induced using a moving acupuncture needle. Tissue-simulating bovine gel phantom and a 0.4mm diameter acupuncture needle were used in the experiment. The results showed that observable shear waves could be induced in the gel phantom by cyclic needle motion. The observed wavelength varied with excitation frequency, as expected. Generating shear waves using moving needles may be a useful tool to study the basic mechanism of acupuncture with MRE. Further study will be conducted to observe the wave motion in inhomogeneous media and acupuncture-induced effects in invivo studies.published_or_final_versio

    On-line identification of seeds in mandarins with magnetic resonance imaging

    Mandarins have been inspected using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in order to detect the presence of seeds. To enhance contrast between seeds and pulp, effective transverse relaxation time-weighted fast low angle shot images (703 ms acquisition time) were acquired. Stationary fruits were imaged and then the images were segmented to extract several features. The maximum radius of the region containing the seeds and the central axis rmax, and the perimeter of this region P were the most powerful features for discrimination between seedless and seed-containing fruits. Such features were the most robust since they showed the lowest noise-to-signal ratios (N/S). The proportions of correct classification were 88.9% and 86.7% for seedless and seed-containing fruits, respectively, under MRI stationary conditions. The performance under on-line conditions was evaluated by imaging the fruits while conveyed at 54 mm/s. An analysis of variance with the features extracted from the static images and the motion-corrected dynamic images showed that there were statistically indistinguishable. The proportions of correct classification were 92.5% and 79.5% for the seedless and seed-containing category, respectively, under MRI dynamic conditions. Reduction in the distance between categories for rmax was addressed as the main cause for the decrease in discrimination performance. The robustness of the motion correction procedure was highlighted by the low differences in the N/S ratio and the noise-to-measured range ratios between static and dynamic features
