    Using negative detections to estimate source finder reliability

    We describe a simple method to determine the reliability of source finders based on the detection of sources with both positive and negative total flux. Under the assumption that the noise is symmetric and that real sources have positive total flux, negative detections can be used to assign to each positive detection a probability of being real.     KK246, a dwarf galaxy with extended H I disk in the Local Void

    We have found that KK 246, the only confirmed galaxy located within the nearby Tully Void, is a dwarf galaxy with an extremely extended H I disk and signs of an H I cloud with anomalous velocity. It also exhibits clear misalignment between the kinematical major and minor axes, indicative of an oval distortion, and a general misalignment between the H I and optical major axes. We measure a H I mass of 1.05 +- 0.08 x 10^8 M_sun, and a H I extent 5 times that of the stellar disk, one of the most extended H I disks known. We estimate a dynamical mass of 4.1 x 10^9 M_sun, making this also one of the darkest galaxies known, with a mass-to-light ratio of 89. The relative isolation and extreme underdense environment make this an interesting case for examining the role of gas accretion in galaxy evolution.Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in A

    IC 4200: a gas-rich early-type galaxy formed via a major merger

    We present the result of radio and optical observations of the S0 galaxy IC 4200. We find that the galaxy hosts 8.5 billion solar masses of HI rotating on a ~90 deg warped disk extended out to 60 kpc from the centre of the galaxy. Optical spectroscopy reveals a simple-stellar-population-equivalent age of 1.5 Gyr in the centre of the galaxy and V- and R-band images show stellar shells. Ionised gas is observed within the stellar body and is kinematically decoupled from the stars and characterised by LINER-like line ratios.We interpret these observational results as evidence for a major merger origin of IC 4200, and date the merger back to 1-3 Gyr ago.Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics; 18 pages, 13 figures; the tables of Appendix C can be downloaded at http://www.astro.rug.nl/~pserra/IC420

    The effect of stellar feedback on a Milky Way-like galaxy and its gaseous halo

    We present the study of a set of N-body+smoothed particle hydrodynamics simulations of a Milky Way-like system produced by the radiative cooling of hot gas embedded in a dark matter halo. The galaxy and its gaseous halo evolve for 10 Gyr in isolation, which allows us to study how internal processes affect the evolution of the system. We show how the morphology, the kinematics and the evolution of the galaxy are affected by the input supernova feedback energy ESN, and we compare its properties with those of the Milky Way. Different values of ESN do not significantly affect the star formation history of the system, but the disc of cold gas gets thicker and more turbulent as feedback increases. Our main result is that, for the highest value of ESN considered, the galaxy shows a prominent layer of extraplanar cold (log (T/K) < 4.3) gas extended up to a few kiloparsec above the disc at column densities of 1019 cm-2. The kinematics of this material is in agreement with that inferred for the H I haloes of our Galaxy and NGC 891, although its mass is lower. Also, the location, the kinematics and the typical column densities of the hot (5.3 < log (T/K) < 5.7) gas are in good agreement with those determined from the O VI absorption systems in the halo of the Milky Way and external galaxies. In contrast with the observations, however, gas at log (T/K) < 5.3 is lacking in the circumgalactic region of our systems

The algorithm works by replacing one of the variables by an approximation of a transcendental number. It generalizes recent results by Kannan, Lenstra, Lovasz and Schonhage. Asymptotically the algorithm improves on the running times of previously published method

    Extended, regular HI structures around early-type galaxies

    We discuss the morphology and kinematics of the HI of a sample of 30 southern gas-rich early-type galaxies selected from the HI Parkes All-Sky Survey (HIPASS). This is the largest collection of high-resolution HI data of a homogeneously selected sample. Given the sensitivity of HIPASS, these galaxies represent the most HI-rich early-type galaxies. In two-thirds of the galaxies, we find the HI to be in a large, regular disk- or ring-like structure that in some cases is strongly warped. In the remaining cases we find the HI distributed in irregular tails or clouds offset from the galaxy. The giant, regular HI structures can be up to ~200 kpc in diameter and contain up to 10^10 M_sun of HI. The incidence of irregular HI structures appears to be somewhat higher in elliptical galaxies, but the large, regular structures are observed in both elliptical and S0 galaxies and are not strictly connected to the presence of a stellar disk. If these two types of galaxies are the result of different formation paths, this is not strongly reflected in the characteristics of the HI. The size and the regular kinematics of the HI structures imply that the neutral hydrogen must have settled in these galaxies several Gyr ago. Merging as well as gas accretion from the IGM are viable explanations for the origin of the gas in these galaxies. The average column density of the HI is low so that little star formation is expected to occur and these early-type galaxies can remain gas rich for very long periods of time. The large HI structures likely represent key structures for tracing the origin and evolution of these galaxies.Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A, 13 pages, 6 figures.     Neutral Gas Distribution and Kinematics of the Nearly Face-on Spiral Galaxy NGC 1232

    We have analyzed high velocity resolution HI synthesis observations of the nearly face-on Sc galaxy NGC 1232. The neutral gas distribution extends well beyond the optical extent of the galaxy. As expected, local peaks in the HI column density are associated with the spiral arms. Further, the HI column density drops precipitously near the center of the galaxy. Closed contours in the velocity field suggest either that the system is warped, or that the rotation curve declines. The velocity dispersion is approximately constant throughout the system, with a median value of 9.9 +/- 1.8 km/s. When corrected for rotational broadening, there is no indication of a radial trend in the neutral gas velocity dispersion in this galaxy.Comment: 14 pages of text, 10 pages of figures.
