Image charge dynamics in time-dependent quantum transport

In this work we investigate the effects of the electron-electron interaction between a molecular junction and the metallic leads in time-dependent quantum transport. We employ the recently developed embedded Kadanoff-Baym method [Phys. Rev. B 80, 115107 (2009)] and show that the molecule-lead interaction changes substantially the transient and steady-state transport properties. We first show that the mean-field Hartree-Fock (HF) approximation does not capture the polarization effects responsible for the renormalization of the molecular levels neither in nor out of equilibrium. Furthermore, due to the time-local nature of the HF self-energy there exists a region in parameter space for which the system does not relax after the switch-on of a bias voltage. These and other artifacts of the HF approximation disappear when including correlations at the second-Born or GW levels. Both these approximations contain polarization diagrams which correctly account for the screening of the charged molecule. We find that by changing the molecule-lead interaction the ratio between the screening and relaxation time changes, an effect which must be properly taken into account in any realistic time-dependent simulation. Another important finding is that while in equilibrium the molecule-lead interaction is responsible for a reduction of the HOMO-LUMO gap and for a substantial redistribution of the spectral weight between the main spectral peaks and the induced satellite spectrum, in the biased system it can have the opposite effect, i.e., it sharpens the spectral peaks and opens the HOMO-LUMO gap.Comment: 18 pages, 26 figure

Potential impacts of a Turkish EU-membership on agri-food markets

This paper examines possible impacts of a Turkish accession to the EU on the agricultural markets in Turkey and the EU. AGMEMOD, an econometric, dynamic, multi-market, partial equilibrium economic model for EU agriculture at Member State level, has been extended with a model for the Turkish agricultural sector and afterwards applied to gain quantitative insights into Turkish accession effects. To establish a model for Turkey, the implementation of the model equations required parameter estimates, or the specification of synthetic model parameters. A database with time series on Turkish agricultural production, market balances and prices, macroeconomic variables and policy variables was developed in order to estimate such model parameters and to build an operational Turkish agriculture sector model. Most results show that the dominant impact of the Turkish accession on Turkish agriculture is a reduction of domestic producer prices, which induces further market effects. The - mostly decoupled - CAP support payments will induce smaller incentives to increase production than those which Turkish farmers receive prior to the EU accession. In Turkey effects of accession to the EU will be mostly negative for crop producers (except for tobacco), whereas the consumers are expected to gain from lower market prices. In contrast, producers of sheep meat, broiler and dairy milk could gain from an accession due to lower feed costs

    Atom lithography without laser cooling

Using direct-write atom lithography, Fe nanolines are deposited with a pitch of 186 nm, a full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 50 nm, and a height of up to 6 nm. These values are achieved by relying on geometrical collimation of the atomic beam, thus without using laser collimation techniques. This opens the way for applying direct-write atom lithography to a wide variety of elements.Comment: 7 pages, 11 figure

Crossover behavior for long reptating polymers

We analyze the Rubinstein-Duke model for polymer reptation by means of density matrix renormalization techniques. We find a crossover behavior for a series of quantities as function of the polymer length. The crossover length may become very large if the mobility of end groups is small compared to that of the internal reptons. Our results offer an explanation to a controversy between theory, experiments and simulations on the leading and subleading scaling behavior of the polymer renewal time and diffusion constant.Comment: 4 Pages, RevTeX, and 4 PostScript figures include

    |V|: New insight into the circular polarization of radio pulsars

We present a study of single pulses from nine bright northern pulsars to investigate the behaviour of circular polarisation, V. The observations were conducted with the Effelsberg 100-m radio telescope at 1.41 GHz and 4.85 GHz and the Westerbork radio telescope at 352 MHz. For the first time, we present the average profile of the absolute circular polarisation |V| in the single pulses. We demonstrate that the average profile of |V| is the distinguishing feature between pulse components that exhibit low V in the single pulses and components that exhibit high V of either handedness, despite both cases resulting in a low mean. We also show that the |V| average profile remains virtually constant with frequency, which is not generally the case for V, leading us to the conclusion that |V| is a key quantity in the pulsar emission problem.Comment: 5 pages, accepted for publication in MNRAS letter
