Reply to Farine and Aplin: Chimpanzees choose their association and interaction partners
Farine and Aplin (1) question the validity of our study reporting group-specific social dynamics in chimpanzees (2). As alternative to our approach, Farine and Aplin advance a “prenetwork permutation” methodology that tests against random assortment (3). We appreciate Farine and Aplin’s interest and applied their suggested approaches to our data. The new analyses revealed highly similar results to those of our initial approach. We further dispel Farine and Aplin’s critique by outlining its incompatibility to our study system, methodology, and analysis.First, when we apply the suggested prenetwork permutation to our proximity dataset, we again find significant population-level differences in association rates, while controlling for population size [as derived from Farine and Aplin’s script (4); original result, P < 0.0001; results including prenetwork permutation, P < 0.0001]. Cooperating if one’s Goals are Collective-Based: Social Identification Effects in Social Dilemmas as a Function of Goal-Transformation
Prior studies of the effect of group identification on cooperation in social dilemmas have advanced two competing accounts of this effect, the goal-transformation hypothesis, which holds that identification implies a sense of collective self, which makes personal and collective goals interchangeable, and the goal-amplification hypothesis, which states that identification induces positive expectations about others’ cooperative behavior. These prior studies have, however, neglected to assess the process measures necessary to pit the one account against the other. Following prior research, the present study showed that the effect of identification was moderated by participants’ social value orientation (i.e., individual differences in evaluating the importance of outcomes for self and other) in such a way that identification influenced proselfs’ cooperation more than prosocials’ cooperation. This suggests that the consequence of group identification is that collective goals become personal goals. Extending earlier recent research, mediational analyses showed that the effect of our identification manipulation was mediated by participants’ sense of collective self and not by their expectations. Relating Agulhas leakage to the Agulhas Current retroflection location
The relation between the Agulhas Current
retroflection location and the magnitude of Agulhas leakage,
the transport of water from the Indian to the Atlantic Ocean,
is investigated in a high-resolution numerical ocean model.
Sudden eastward retreats of the Agulhas Current retroflection
loop are linearly related to the shedding of Agulhas rings,
where larger retreats generate larger rings. Using numerical
Lagrangian floats a 37 year time series of the magnitude of
Agulhas leakage in the model is constructed. The time series
exhibits large amounts of variability, both on weekly and annual
time scales. A linear relation is found between the magnitude
of Agulhas leakage and the location of the Agulhas
Current retroflection, both binned to three month averages.
In the relation, a more westward location of the Agulhas Current
retroflection corresponds to an increased transport from
the Indian Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean. When this relation
is used in a linear regression and applied to almost 20 years
of altimetry data, it yields a best estimate of the mean magnitude
of Agulhas leakage of 13.2 Sv. The early retroflection
of 2000, when Agulhas leakage was probably halved, can be
identified using the regression
First-principles nonequilibrium Green's function approach to transient photoabsorption: Application to atoms
We put forward a first-principle NonEquilibrium Green's Function (NEGF)
approach to calculate the transient photoabsorption spectrum of optically thin
samples. The method can deal with pump fields of arbitrary strength, frequency
and duration as well as for overlapping and nonoverlapping pump and probe
pulses. The electron-electron repulsion is accounted for by the correlation
self-energy, and the resulting numerical scheme deals with matrices that scale
quadratically with the system size. Two recent experiments, the first on helium
and the second on krypton, are addressed. For the first experiment we explain
the bending of the Autler-Townes absorption peaks with increasing the
pump-probe delay \t, and relate the bending to the thickness and density of
the gas. For the second experiment we find that sizable spectral structures of
the pump-generated admixture of Kr ions are fingerprints of {\em dynamical
correlation} effects, and hence they cannot be reproduced by time-local
self-energy approximations. Remarkably, the NEGF approach also captures the
retardation of the absorption onset of Kr with respect to Kr as a

Kadanoff-Baym approach to time-dependent quantum transport in AC and DC fields
We have developed a method based on the embedded Kadanoff-Baym equations to
study the time evolution of open and inhomogeneous systems. The equation of
motion for the Green's function on the Keldysh contour is solved using
different conserving many-body approximations for the self-energy. Our
formulation incorporates basic conservation laws, such as particle
conservation, and includes both initial correlations and initial embedding
effects, without restrictions on the time-dependence of the external driving
field. We present results for the time-dependent density, current and dipole
moment for a correlated tight binding chain connected to one-dimensional
non-interacting leads exposed to DC and AC biases of various forms. We find
that the self-consistent 2B and GW approximations are in extremely good
agreement with each other at all times, for the long-range interactions that we
consider. In the DC case we show that the oscillations in the transients can be
understood from interchain and lead-chain transitions in the system and find
that the dominant frequency corresponds to the HOMO-LUMO transition of the
central wire. For AC biases with odd inversion symmetry odd harmonics to high
harmonic order in the driving frequency are observed in the dipole moment,
whereas for asymmetric applied bias also even harmonics have considerable
intensity. In both cases we find that the HOMO-LUMO transition strongly mixes
with the harmonics leading to harmonic peaks with enhanced intensity at the
