Climate change is one of the biggest global challenges the earth faces. It comes with a need to change the way we produce, supply, distribute and use energy. For this energy transition, we not only need money and technology, we also need a change in behaviour on multiple levels. Psychological perspectives, theories, and research methods are essential to discover behavioural patterns among different stakeholders, varying from end-users, producers, policymakers and installers. This article describes the role of psychology in behavioural research on the energy transition. Furthermore, it describes how research findings are applied in energy policy and technology.Organisation & Governanc

SBW Hervalidatie piping. HP5.1 Draaiboek IJkdijk full-scale piping proef

Het programma Sterkte & Belastingen Waterkeringen (SBW) richt zich op het invullen van belangrijke kennisleemtes bij het vijfjaarlijkse toetsen van de primaire waterkeringen. Doel van het SBW piping project is het identificeren van onzekerheden binnen de huidige piping toetsingsregels en deze eventueel te verkleinen of elimineren. De onderzoeksresultaten zullen uiteindelijk worden gevalideerd in full-scale piping proeven op de proeflocatie van de Stichting IJkdijk. Het primaire doel van het full-scale experiment is het valideren van de op basis van schaalproeven aangepaste pipingrekenregel van Sellmeijer en het toepassingsgebied van deze rekenregeL En tweede doelstelling is het valideren van de theorie- en procesbeschrijving vanaf het begin van zandtransport tot aan doorgaande pipe en dijkdoorbraak. In deze rapportage wordt het draaiboek behandeld van de bouw en de uitvoering van het tuliscale piping experiment. Ingegaan wordt op onder andere het ontwerp, de wijze van uitvoering, dataverwerking, planning en praktische zaken. Tevens is een veiligheidsparagraaf opgenomen in het draaiboek. Het draaiboek wordt verspreid onder alle direct betrokkenen bij het full-scale experiment tijdens de bouw en de uitvoering.SB

Ook zichzelf kon ze tot nu toe niet over die drempel tillen, en dus deed ze nog maar even niks. Maar het is tijd 'to put your money where your mouth is'. Haar eigen woning moet van het gas af. Water level statistics in Delta Areas

Overview of a mathematical model for the Lower Volga Delta in Sobek both in 1D as well as in 2D. In inflow of the Wolga in the Caspian Sea has been studied. The connected database contains discharge information of the Volga river. The failure probabilities of flood defences in Delta areas or transition zones arefrom the view points of loads, amongst others, determined by wind surge on sea and heavy precipitation on land, causing large river discharge. A study will be presented with results from the Volga delta. The Volga is Europe\u92s biggest river with a catchment area of 1.4 million square kilometers. It flows through a big part of Russia and ends in the Caspian Sea. The delta has three important characteristics; a varying discharge near the head (intra-annually varying between 6.000 and 20.000 m3/s), a very small slope (O(5*10-5)) and a fast changing water level in the Caspian Sea(changed from -29 to -26.5m between 1978 and 1995, has been dropping since). A numerical model is being constructed using the software package Sobek. After calibration and validation this model will be used to determine a number of statistical properties of the delta, such as water level probability functions and Q-h relations in the flat delta area. Also the value of information will be looked upon. Is it worth collecting additional data and how accurate should the estimated failure probability be?Floodsit

Brain Power: The role of psychology in energy transitions

In this webinar, TU Delft climate psychologist Gerdien de Vries explains why and how psychological perspectives, theory and methods are useful for energy transitions. Energy transitions imply changes in the behaviour of all actors involved. For example, citizens and organisations need to accept and use new energy technologies, policymakers have to design effective policies, and industries and researchers need to push for both technological and social innovations. Behavioural change in energy transitions is difficult to accomplish though. Psychological mechanisms, such as habits, hassles, and heuristics are identified as important barriers. Therefore, interest in psychology is growing among stakeholders dealing with energy transitions. This interest is visible in the emergence of behavioural or “nudge” units within governmental, civic, and commercial organizations. But despite this emergence, the integration of psychology in the broader energy system is relatively underdeveloped in literature and public policy alike.
