The logistic giant emerge amid the pandemic: the value creation of fedex corporation
This dissertation aims to provide an independent view of the future of FedEx Corporation. Despite the recent sell-off after ground margins fell short of investors' expectations, FedEx is benefiting from interesting trends across all the business segments. Those trends include the shift towards online shopping accelerated by the pandemic, a recovery in the economy around the world and the constraint of passenger capacity. Therefore, this report points towards a buy recommendation with a target price of $286.50 as of December 31st, 2021, translating into an11.4% total shareholder return over the next 12-months
Exploring social influence in crowdsourcing
This study addresses the phenomenon of social influence in crowdsourcing platforms and, inparticular, it sought to explore whether depending on personal, contextual or cultural, characteristics, individuals which participate in such endeavors are more or less prone to become influenced by a majority when performing an objective task.
In crowdsourcing platforms individuals participate through different decision making mechanisms such as voting, averaging and consensus. The exposure to informational cues regarding the aggregate output of a crowd is hypothesized to constitute a pressure upon the individuals' behavior.
Our findings provide evidence about the existence of and proneness to socialinfluence in crowdsourcing platforms. These research also showsthat skill level and homophilousties among participants are a stronghold against the pressures of the majorities. These results empirically demonstrate that in the presence of an informational cues a large amount of individuals accept majorities' outcomes as an evidence of the reality.
Through the current findings, we provide insighton the phenomenon of social influence in crowdsourcing platforms and, by unveiling these results, give a contribution towards managing such platforms
Assessing the influence of floating constructions on water quality and ecology
Large floating projects have the potential to overcome the challenge of land scarcity in urban areas and offer opportunities for energy and food production, or even for creating sustainable living environments. However, they influence the physical, chemical, biological and ecological characteristics of water bodies. The interaction of the floating platforms affect multiple complex aquatic processes, and the potential (negative/positive) effects are not yet fully understood. Managing entities currently struggle with lack of data and knowledge that can support adequate legislation to regulate future projects. In the Netherlands the development of small scale floating projects is already present for some years (e.g. floating houses, restaurants, houseboats), and more recently several large scale floating photovoltaic plants (FPV) have been realized. Several floating constructions in the Netherlands were considered as case-studies for a data-collection campaign. To obtain data and images from underneath floating buildings, underwater drones were equipped with cameras and sensors. The drones were used in multiple locations to scan for differences in concentrations of basic water quality parameters (e.g. dissolved oxygen, electrical conductivity, algae, light intensity) from underneath/near the floating structures, which were then compared with data from locations far from the influence of the buildings. Continuous data was also collected over several days using multi-parameter water quality sensors permanently installed under floating structures
Distributed production planning and control agent based system
A model of an Agent based Production Planning and Control (PPC) system able to be dynamically adaptable to local and distributed utilization of production resources and materials is presented. The PPC system is based on the selection of resources to deal with one order of different quantities of one product each time. In this way it is build one scheduling solution for that particular order. The production resources are selected and scheduled using a multiagent system supported by an implementation of the Smith Contract Net, using Java Spaces technology. The multiagent system is based on three main agents: Client, Resource and Manager. These agents negotiate the final product, and the correspondent components, requested by the client. An order for each product (component) triggers a process of dynamic design of a production system to fulfill that particular order. This system exists till the end of the order
This study falls within the scope of Child Studies and defines its specific area in language studies. It assumes the theoretical and methodological fundamentals of discourse analysis, also considering the influence of related areas. It analyses texts present in textbooks and aims to reveal the images that such texts build of children and childhood, as well as the most relevant linguistic resources associated with such construction. The study concludes that children portrayed in these texts are voiceless and powerless; they are consumers but not co-producers of culture; and the texts instil conservative values aimed at maintaining the social order. It concisely shows the set of most relevant linguistic strategies that the texts use in order to reach their illocutionary goals.CIEC - Centro de Investigação em Estudos da Criança, UM (UI 317 da FCT

AbstractThis paper aims to present part of the current debate about the role of intention in action theory and practical rationality. For this, I begin with the perspective of the philosopher responsible for the resumption of contemporary philosophy of action, Donald Davidson. After a brief exposition of davidsonian conception of intention and action, and of “belief-desire” and “belief-desire-intention” theoretical models in philosophy of action, I intend to develop some considerations about the normative aspect of practical rationality (in the sense that it involves “reasons for”) and the role of intention in that process. For this, I present the way that Michael Bratman (1987) develops a line of argumentation in favor of a certain type of role intention can play as input in practical reasoning, arguing for a genuine role for intention in a conception of practical rationality. Finally, I present some outspread on belief-desire versus belief-desire-intention discussion, as competing proposals for practical rationality explanation
