    Combining system dynamics modeling with other methods: A systematic review

    Although  a significant number of system dynamics (SD) studies draw on multi-method approaches, there is not much knowledge on when and how SD is combined with other methods. Yet, combining SD with other methods allows both researchers and practitioners to enhance the contribution of their modeling work. For a comprehensive review of current SD multi-method practices, this paper draws on an assessment of 45 studies that used SD modeling along with at least one other method. We adopt an evidence-based systematic approach in reviewing these studies and find that additional methods can be embedded in two main phases in the SD modeling process: conceptualization and simulation. Our review contributes to the multi-methodology research practice by consolidating one of the main areas where substantial experience in combining methods has been obtained. In addition, this paper provides insights and a reference point for system dynamicists who wish to go beyond stand-alone SD modeling in addressing complex problems.     Toward the dynamic modeling of transition problems:the case of electric mobility

    Transportation systems are transitioning to e-mobility, but scholars and policymakers are struggling to understand how to accomplish this transition effectively. In response, we draw on the technological innovation systems perspective and the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology to develop a theory-guided and entity-based simulation model to better understand, among others, electric vehicle (EV) adoption processes as a specific yet core element driving business innovation. By doing so, our model is among the first to capture and combine the macro-and microlevel interactions associated with the EV transition process. Our simulation results shed light on the impact of alternative innovation policies, notably by explaining relations between EV market dynamics and changes in e-mobility policies, such as EV-related subsidies and resource mobilization. As such, the simulation modeling approach adopted in this paper enables a more in-depth study of transition problems related to e-mobility. Notably, the resulting modular model can be adjusted to other e-mobility transition problems by changing the specified entities

    The domain of transition studies has been drawing more and more scholarly attention and, as a result, its body of knowledge is rapidly growing. This raises new challenges as well as opportunities, not the least regarding the methodological and philosophical underpinnings of research in this domain. In this respect, transition research, as a relatively young field of inquiry, has been little concerned with methodological investigation and reflection. We propose a framework that enables this reflection: the so-called ‘transition research onion’. Subsequently, we utilize this framework to systematically assess 217 peer-reviewed papers in the field of transition studies, to distill key methodological patterns and trends of the field. The findings suggest that the methodology of transition studies, in terms of depth and diversity, is underdeveloped. These insights serve to guide future research on transition processes

    An integrated model to design earthquake resistant structures

    Selection of the material and design of earthquake resistance structures are an important issue today. Many people die every year due to inappropriate design and selection of the materials. There are several software to be used for structural design of buildings, however they just design the structure based on some limited standards. There is a need to develop a computer-based earthquake resistant design model to integrate the current market’s software with different design standards of different countries. The objective of this study is to propose a model to integrate the local structural design standards/codes with available market’s programs. To achieve this objective, Microsoft Excel was used as the core of the model to be integrated with one of the market’s program. Then, the model was developed in three phases. To test the model, the Iranian design standard (Code 2800) was used to design a 7-story apartment. The results show that the model can be fully integrated with those market’s programs which support Microsoft Excel. The result of Phase 1 of the model is useful to select the optimum selection of the material while Phase 2 and 3 contribute to design of the earthquake resistant structure
