Accounting for Multiplicity in Calculating Eta Earth
Using the updated exoplanet population parameters of our previous study,
which includes the planetary radius updates from Gaia DR2 and an inferred
multiplicity distribution, we provide a revised calculation.
This is achieved by sampling planets from our derived population model and
determining which planets meet our criterion for habitability. To ensure robust
results, we provide probabilities calculated over a range of upper radius
limits. Our most optimistic criterion for habitability provides an
value of . We also
consider the effects of multiplicity and the number of habitable planets each
system may contain. Our calculation indicates that of GK dwarfs
have more than one planet within their habitable zone. This optimistic
habitability criterion also suggests that of solar-like stars
will harbor 5 or more habitable planets. These tightly packed highly habitable
system should be extremely rare, but still possible. Even with our most
pessimistic criterion we still expect that of solar-like stars

On the Drinfeld moduli problem of p-divisible groups
Let be the ring of integers in a division algebra of invariant
over a p-adic local field. Drinfeld proved that the moduli problem of special
formal -modules is representable by Deligne's formal scheme version of the
Drinfeld p-adic halfspace. In this paper we exhibit other moduli spaces of
formal -divisible groups which are represented by -adic formal schemes
whose generic fibers are isomorphic to the Drinfeld p-adic halfspace. We also

Identification of Birds through DNA Barcodes
Short DNA sequences from a standardized region of the genome provide a DNA barcode for identifying species. Compiling a public library of DNA barcodes linked to named specimens could provide a new master key for identifying species, one whose power will rise with increased taxon coverage and with faster, cheaper sequencing. Recent work suggests that sequence diversity in a 648-bp region of the mitochondrial gene, cytochrome c oxidase I (COI), might serve as a DNA barcode for the identification of animal species. This study tested the effectiveness of a COI barcode in discriminating bird species, one of the largest and best-studied vertebrate groups. We determined COI barcodes for 260 species of North American birds and found that distinguishing species was generally straightforward. All species had a different COI barcode(s), and the differences between closely related species were, on average, 18 times higher than the differences within species. Our results identified four probable new species of North American birds, suggesting that a global survey will lead to the recognition of many additional bird species. The finding of large COI sequence differences between, as compared to small differences within, species confirms the effectiveness of COI barcodes for the identification of bird species. This result plus those from other groups of animals imply that a standard screening threshold of sequence difference (10× average intraspecific difference) could speed the discovery of new animal species. The growing evidence for the effectiveness of DNA barcodes as a basis for species identification supports an international exercise that has recently begun to assemble a comprehensive library of COI sequences linked to named specimens
Placental Malaria and Mother-to-Child Transmission of Human Immunodeficiency Virus-1 in Rural Rwanda
We conducted a nested case-control study of placental malaria (PM) and mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) of human immunodeficiency virus-1 (HIV-1) within a prospective cohort of 627 mother-infant pairs followed from October 1989 until April 1994 in rural Rwanda. Sixty stored placentas were examined for PM and other placental pathology, comparing 20 HIV-infected mother-infant (perinatal transmitter) pairs, 20 HIV-uninfected pairs, and 20 HIV-infected mothers who did not transmit to their infant perinatally. Of 60 placentas examined, 45% showed evidence of PM. Placental malaria was associated with increased risk of MTCT of HIV-1 (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] = 6.3; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.4–29.1), especially among primigravidae (aOR = 12.0; 95% CI = 1.0–150; P < 0.05). Before antiretroviral therapy or prophylaxis, PM was associated with early infant HIV infection among rural Rwandan women living in a hyper-endemic malaria region. Primigravidae, among whom malaria tends to be most severe, may be at higher risk
Are gravitational waves from giant magnetar flares observable?
Are giant flares in magnetars viable sources of gravitational radiation? Few
theoretical studies have been concerned with this problem, with the small
number using either highly idealized models or assuming a magnetic field orders
of magnitude beyond what is supported by observations. We perform nonlinear
general-relativistic magnetohydrodynamics simulations of large-scale
hydromagnetic instabilities in magnetar models. We utilise these models to find
gravitational wave emissions over a wide range of energies, from 10^40 to 10^47
erg. This allows us to derive a systematic relationship between the surface
field strength and the gravitational wave strain, which we find to be highly
nonlinear. In particular, for typical magnetar fields of a few times 10^15 G,
we conclude that a direct observation of f-modes excited by global magnetic
field reconfigurations is unlikely with present or near-future gravitational
wave observatories, though we also discuss the possibility that modes in a
low-frequency band up to 100 Hz could be sufficiently excited to be relevant

Room temperature negative differential resistance of a monolayer molecular rotor device
An electrically driven molecular rotor device comprised of a monolayer of redox-active ligated copper compounds sandwiched between a gold electrode and a highly doped P+Si substrate was fabricated. Current-voltage spectroscopy revealed a temperature-dependent negative differential resistance (NDR) associated with the device. Time-dependent density functional theory suggests the source of the observed NDR to be redox-induced ligand rotation around the copper metal center, an explanation consistent with the proposed energy diagram of the device. An observed temperature dependence of the NDR behavior further supports this hypothesis
An anomalous alloy: Y_x Si_{1-x}
We study via density functional-based molecular dynamics the structural and
dynamical properties of the rare earth silicon amorphous alloy Y_xSi_{1-x} for
x=0.093 and x=0.156. The Si network forms cavities in which a Y^{3+} cation is
entrapped. Its electrons are transferred to the Si network and are located in
the dangling bonds of the Si atoms that line the Y cavities. This leads to the
presence of low coordinated Si atoms that can be described as monovalent or
divalent anions. For x=0.156, the cavities touch each other and share Si atoms
that have two dangling bonds. The vibrational spectrum is similar to that of
amorphous Si. However, doping induces a shoulder at 70 cm^{-1} and a pronounced
peak at 180 cm^{-1} due to low coordinated Si.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
TARGET: A Digitizing And Trigger ASIC For The Cherenkov Telescope Array
The future ground-based gamma-ray observatory Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA)
will feature multiple types of imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes, each
with thousands of pixels. To be affordable, camera concepts for these
telescopes have to feature low cost per channel and at the same time meet the
requirements for CTA in order to achieve the desired scientific goals. We
present the concept of the TeV Array Readout Electronics with GSa/s sampling
and Event Trigger (TARGET) Application Specific Circuit (ASIC), envisaged to be
used in the cameras of various CTA telescopes, e.g. the Gamma-ray Cherenkov
Telescope (GCT), a proposed 2-Mirror Small-Sized Telescope, and the
Schwarzschild-Couder Telescope (SCT), a proposed Medium-Sized Telescope. In the
latest version of this readout concept the sampling and trigger parts are split
into dedicated ASICs, TARGET C and T5TEA, both providing 16 parallel input
channels. TARGET C features a tunable sampling rate (usually 1 GSa/s), a 16k
sample deep buffer for each channel and on-demand digitization and transmission
of waveforms with typical spans of ~100 ns. The trigger ASIC, T5TEA, provides 4
low voltage differential signal (LVDS) trigger outputs and can generate a
pedestal voltage independently for each channel. Trigger signals are generated
by T5TEA based on the analog sum of the input in four independent groups of
four adjacent channels and compared to a threshold set by the user. Thus, T5TEA
generates four LVDS trigger outputs, as well as 16 pedestal voltages fed to
TARGET C independently for each channel. We show preliminary results of the
