    Designing a comprehensive system for analysis of handwriting biomechanics in relation to neuromotor control of handwriting

    A comprehensive system for investigation of biomechanical and neuromuscular processes involved with producing handwriting and drawing was developed. The system included a pen-like grip measuring device that enabled the variations of finger grip force associated with writing and drawing to be measured while holding the pen in tripod grip. The pen was integrated with a digitiser tablet for recording x,ycoordinates and pressure of the nib and a motion analysis system for recording the limb and hand kinematics. It was observed that for line drawing in the y-direction of the tablet, finger forces were directly related to pen tip movement and finger forces were modulated in a repeatable and predictable fashion, while this was not the case for line drawing in the x-direction. This was evidence for longstanding assumptions. Wrist rotation was required for production of lines in the x-direction without excessive deviation. For writing tasks, it was observed that no two tasks performed by one subject share an identical writing process, not even when the writing results are (nearly) identical. The neuromuscular control apparatus is highly flexible and works in a coordinated fashion that allows production of nearly equal end-results by means of different mechanical and therefore neuromuscular processes. For spiral drawing, tremor that originates from the fingers, hand and arm was quantified with the transducer pen. Limb joint kinematics were displayed in three dimensions with colour coding of coordinate sample numbers. This method can reveal the origin of some forms of limb tremor. Pen grip force patterns during signature writing were found to be characteristic for subjects, which relate to their individual pen-hand interaction, resulting from fine control of distal joints. Variation between trials of the same subject was observed, revealing adaptations of the computational processes during writing.     First, do no harm: Evaluating resources for teaching social entrepreneurship

    We reviewed two key repositories of social entrepreneurship pedagogical resources: Ashoka.org and CasePlace.org. Each provides a set of useful resources, comprising videos, syllabi, cases, readings and other resources that make it easy for instructors to design social entrepreneurship courses, modules, or programs. We caution against what we see as overenthusiasm for the topic, however, since social entrepreneurship involves tinkering with social structures, sometimes with disastrous unintended effects. We advise instructors to teach their students to think critically about social entrepreneurship initiatives, since they include the potential for harm as well as good. © Academy of Management Learning & Education

    Unobtrusive Maintenance: Temporal Complexity, Latent Category Control and the Stalled Emergence of the Cleantech Sector

While researchers have focused on whether incumbents can successfully adapt, we know little about how potentially disruptive innovation may be avoided. Studying clean technology in Canada, we examine incumbent resistance when potentially disruptive technologies are seen as socially beneficial. We identify actions taken by incumbents and other socio-technical regime actors to respond to the issue while simultaneously enacting legitimate stabilizing mechanisms within the regime’s institutional infrastructure. Specifically, temporal and resource-based actions led to temporal complexity for disruptive cleantech entrepreneurs, and evaluation structuring work led to latent control of the cleantech category, privileging incumbents and resulting in unobtrusive maintenance. Our findings contribute to the disruptive innovation and institutional theory literatures by showing how disruption may be stalled by the enactment of legitimate elements of the institutional infrastructure rather than direct institutional defence

    Social Innovation: Integrating Micro, Meso, and Macro Level Insights From Institutional Theory

As these social problems feature substantial interdependencies among multiple systems and actors, developing and implementing innovative solutions involve the re-negotiating of settled institutions or the building of new ones. In this introductory article, we introduce a stylized three-cycle model highlighting the institutional nature of social innovation efforts. The model conceptualizes social innovation processes as the product of agentic, relational, and situated dynamics in three interrelated cycles that operate at the micro, meso, and macro levels of analysis. The five papers included in this special issue address one or more of these cycles. We draw on these papers and the model to stimulate and offer guidance to future conversations on social innovations from an institutional theory perspective

    Field or fields? Building the scaffolding for cumulation of research on institutional fields

The concept of an institutional field is one of the cornerstones of institutional theory, and yet the concept has been stretched both theoretically and empirically, making consolidation of findings across multiple studies more difficult. In this article, we review the literature and analyze empirical studies of institutional fields to build scaffolding for the cumulation of research on institutional fields. Our review revealed two types of fields: exchange and issue fields, with three subtypes of each. We describe their characteristics, and subsequently, review field conditions in the extant literature and develop a typology based on two dimensions: the extent of elaboration of institutional infrastructure and the extent to which there is an agreed-upon prioritization of logics. We discuss the implications of field types and conditions for isomorphism, agency, and field change, based on a review of the literature that revealed six pathways of field change and the factors affecting them. We outline a research agenda based on our review highlighting the need for consolidation of field studies and identify several outstanding issues that are in need of further research

    This chapter examines the closest Finnish analogy to the French function of the prefect. In Finland, since 2010, this function has been vested in the institution of the State Regional Administrative Agency (SRAA, aluehallintovirasto, ‘AVI’). There are six SRAAs, each headed by a Chief Director (ylijohtaja) nominated by the government. The study had four main findings. First, despite ambiguity in institutional terminology, classifications, boundaries and identities concerning the SRAA, one can discern few true functional or structural deficiencies. Second, the SRAA is a hybrid between an institution of its own and a territorial representative of either government ministries or government agencies, to which is related the fact that each SRAA has both responsibilities concerning its territory and nationwide responsibilities. Third, tensions between performance and institutional legitimation prevail in the institution of the SRAA, but again without serious deficiencies. Fourth, the 2010 substitution of the SRAA for the former Province comprised a radical institutional change. The 2015–2019 Finnish government intended to abolish the SRAAs, but the subsequent government abandoned that reform, and ultimately by mid-2020 it became clear that the institution of the SRAA was here to stay after all.Peer reviewe

    Graphical Tasks to Measure Upper Limb Function in Patients With Parkinson's Disease:Validity and Response to Dopaminergic Medication

    The most widely used method to assess motor functioning in Parkinson's disease (PD) patients is the unified Parkinson's disease rating scale-III (UPDRS-III). The UPDRS-III has limited ability to detect subtle changes in motor symptoms. Alternatively, graphical tasks can be used to provide objective measures of upper limb motor dysfunction. This study investigated the validity of such graphical tasks to assess upper limb function in PD patients and their ability to detect subtle changes in performance. Fourteen PD patients performed graphical tasks before and after taking dopaminergic medication. Graphical tasks included figure tracing, writing, and a modified Fitts' task. The Purdue pegboard test was performed to validate these graphical tasks. Movement time (MT), writing size, and the presence of tremor were assessed. MT on the graphical tasks correlated significantly with performance on the Purdue pegboard test (Spearman's rho > 0.65; p <0.05). MT decreased significantly after the intake of dopaminergic medication. Tremor power decreased after taking dopaminergic medication in most PD patients who suffered from tremor. Writing size did not correlate with performance on the Purdue pegboard test, nor did it change after taking medication. Our set of graphical tasks is valid to assess upper limb function in PD patients. MT proved to be the most useful measure for this purpose. The response on dopaminergic medication was optimally reflected by an improved MT on the graphical tasks in combination with a decreased tremor power, whereas writing size did not respond to dopaminergic treatment

    From green technology development to green innovation: inducing regulatory adoption of pathogen detection technology for sustainable forestry

    Technological entrepreneurship has been widely acknowledged as a key driver of modern industrial economies, and more recently, a panacea for environmental and social problems. However, our current understanding of how green-technology ventures emerge and diffuse more sustainable innovations remains limited. We advance theory on green entrepreneurship by drawing on institutional work to refine and extend our understanding of how entrepreneurs may influence government policies and practices in their attempts to diffuse green technology. We develop a theoretical framework that combines institutional work with a search tool, the technological, commercial, organizational, and societal (TCOS) framework of innovative uncertainties, which identifies key opportunities, hurdles, and potential unintended consequences at early stages of technology development. We present a detailed case study of a potential university-based green-tech venture developing pathogen detection technology for forestry protection. Foreign pathogens spread by international trade can have major detrimental impacts on forests and the industries that rely on them. Our analysis found that green technology demonstrating technological feasibility is necessary but not sufficient; green-tech ventures must also engage in institutional work, in this case, articulating the technology’s benefits to regulators to establish legitimacy and avoid misuse that can hinder its adoption. We thus add to previous studies by emphasizing that institutional work could be a main activity for a green-tech venture, a core entrepreneurial strategy rather than an afterthought
